Mumbai Police has taken major action so far this year against Bangladeshi citizens living illegally in the city. Between January and November, the police have registered FIRs in 401 such cases and deported 1,001 people out of the country. Officials said that this action is being taken as part of the ongoing special campaign.

Action taken after visa violation

According to officials, those detained were either overstaying their visas in India or living in the city without any valid documents. The police first collected evidence against them, confirmed the visa violation and then started action.

Sent from Pune to the border through Air Force

Police said that most of the detained people were first taken to Pune. From here, they were taken to the Bangladesh border by special planes of the Indian Air Force, where the Border Security Force handed them over to Bangladeshi security personnel. Officials say that this process was done completely as per legal procedure.

Big revelation of making fake documents

A shocking thing came to light that many Bangladeshi citizens had made fake Aadhaar cards, ration cards and other identity cards while living in India. Police have recovered many fake documents from their possession. Besides, it has also started finding out how all these documents were made.

Officials said that such activities are still being monitored in many areas of the city. Mumbai Police, Special Branch and central agencies are working together to identify such suspicious people. Police say that strict action will continue against those living illegally in future also.

Action on illegal bangladeshi: Action is being taken on illegal Bangladeshis in Assam. The government of Himanta Bisw Sarma has accelerated the process of identity and return of those who have been declared illegal foreigners by foreign tribunals. The Assam government is dumping these people back in No-Mains Land between India-Bangladesh. So far, 49 such people have been dumped.

On 27 and 29 May, at least 49 such foreign nationals were dumped from western and southern Assam. At least three petitioners on the case have demanded to detect their family members in separate Supreme Court and Guwahati High Court and stop the ongoing campaign.

What did Himant Biswa Sarma say?

Assam CM Himant Biswa Sarma said on Friday (May 30, 2025) that “30,000 people have disappeared after different tribunals have been declared foreign nationals in the last several years.

CM Sarma said that there will be many push back actions in the coming days and he also said that the declared foreign person can appeal to the High Court or Supreme Court. He said, “If a person does not appeal in the High Court, then his right to live in India is over, but if the declared foreign person can show that he has appealed, we do not bother him.”

The CM further said, “If the court (on the orders of the tribunal declared foreign), we are honoring the court and we have allowed such people to live.”

‘Two types of illegal Bangladeshi’

Sarma said that there are two types of illegal people, one people who have just come and the other people who have been declared foreigners by the tribunals. He said, “The Supreme Court (in February) had ordered that those who have been declared foreigners and those who have not made any appeal should be sent back in any way. Yesterday only 35 Bangladeshi who came to Silchar near the border of Meghalaya a few days ago, were caught and sent back.”

Petitions filed in High Court and Supreme Court

On Thursday, the Guwahati High Court issued a notice to the state government and directed the details of the hideouts of two brothers who were declared foreigners and later released on conditional bail. Abu Bakr Siddiq and Akbar Ali’s nephew Torarap Ali claimed in his petition that his family feared that both their uncles may be in danger of illegally dumping in Bangladesh.

Both were declared foreigners by the tribunal in 2017 and sent to a transit camp in Golpara. Following the Supreme Court’s directive, he was released on bail in 2020 that those detained for more than two years could be released on bail. The petitioner said that he was detained by the police on 24 May and claimed that the authorities had refused to give details of his hideout.
