Hormuz Strait Blockade: A 2000 km long deep-sea pipeline (South Asia Gas Enterprise- SAGE) is proposed between India’s Gujarat and Oman, which can prove to be a game-changer for India’s energy security. Through this ambitious project, to be built at an estimated cost of about 5 billion dollars (about 41000 crores), a gas pipeline will be laid under the Arabian Sea from Ras Al Jafand in Oman to Mundra Port in Gujarat.

World’s deepest gas pipeline

This gas pipeline will pass at a depth of 3400 meters (3.4 kilometers) below the sea surface, making it one of the most challenging deep sea pipelines in the world. Through this pipeline, 31 million metric standard cubic meters (MMSCMD) of natural gas can be supplied to India every day.

Currently, India imports gas through LNG ships, which is very expensive. Getting gas through pipeline will result in huge savings of about $2-3 per mmBtu in import expenditure.

How important is this project for India?

India is largely dependent on imports for its energy needs. A large part of these imports come from Gulf countries and reach India through the Strait of Hormuz. It is a narrow sea route, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. Any disruption in this route could have an immediate impact on global energy markets, affecting shipping costs, fuel prices and supply chains.

Recent tensions in West Asia have once again highlighted how risky it can be to depend on just one sea route. Rapid fluctuations in LNG prices and concerns over the safety of shipping have renewed interest in alternatives that could provide greater stability of supply.

Unlike LNG imports—which require the gas to be liquified, transported by tanker, and regasified upon arrival—natural gas can travel directly from its source to its destination via pipeline. Experts say that this can reduce the risk of disruptions affecting maritime trade routes.

It has been told by the company that natural gas has been found in a well in Vijaypuram-3 near the coast of Andaman. This is the company’s second important hydrocarbon (oil-gas) discovery in this area. According to the company, the Vijayapuram-3 well is located about 15 kilometers away from the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands.

Drilling at this place was done in 355 meter deep sea area. During initial investigation, signs of natural gas were found at a depth of more than 1900 meters and gas was seen coming out continuously, which confirmed its presence here.

Talking about this, Oil India said that this discovery is also important because it indicates that large reserves of oil and gas may exist in the Andaman Sea area. However, it has not been decided yet whether production from here will be possible from a business point of view or not. More tests will be done for this in the coming time. Oman-Gujarat Subsea Pipeline

Under this subsea project of Rs 40,000 crore, about 2000 km long transnational pipeline will be laid in the deep sea, which will directly connect Oman to the Indian state of Gujarat.

At present, 40 percent of India’s crude oil and 90 percent of LPG supply is through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently closed due to tension between America and Iran. In such a situation, the Oman-Gujarat Subsea Gas Pipeline Project will prove helpful in bypassing this disputed route completely.

How much time will it take to complete?

According to media reports, this project will cost Rs 40,000 crore and will take 5-7 years to complete. The benefit from this will be that India will continue to get direct supply of safe, cheap and continuous natural gas without any maritime and diplomatic obstruction. Pipeline will be laid in deep sea

This pipeline will be laid at a depth of 3450 meters (about 3.5 kilometers) in the sea, making it one of the most difficult and deepest undersea infrastructure projects in the world. Iranian oil is much cheaper than oil from other countries, hence its consumption is high in many areas of Pakistan.

Impact on oil supply due to Middle East

Oil supply has also been affected due to the increasing war in the Middle East and the impact of the Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan says that it has a stock of petrol and diesel for about 24 days, but due to the war situation, oil is not being supplied properly through other routes. Along with this, due to the ongoing war in Iran, petrol and diesel coming from there is also not able to reach Pakistan. Its biggest impact is visible in Balochistan, where more than 70 percent of petrol pumps are said to be empty.
