Director Imtiaz Ali is in the news these days for his upcoming film ‘I will be back’. During the promotion of the film, he shared many interesting things with IANS. In particular, he told a funny story about the shooting of the film’s song ‘Maskara’. He told that this song was shot in Malerkotla city of Punjab, which is the hometown of famous lyricist Irshad Kamil.

Speaking to IANS, Imtiaz Ali said, ‘Malerkotla is a very beautiful location. This also has a deep emotional memory. This is the same city from where Irshad Kamil started his dreams.

Shooting in Malerkotla was special

Imtiaz Ali said, ‘This was a unique experience for me, because for the first time I was shooting a song written by Irshad Kamil in his hometown. This thing made me very emotional from inside. I have seen Irshad since the time when he was making his debut in the film industry. My first film and Irshad’s first film came almost at the same time, so there has always been a special connection in our journey.

When Imtiaz Ali became emotional

Recalling that special moment, the director said, ‘During the shooting in Malerkotla, it came to my mind that once a boy from this small town had gone to Mumbai in search of employment and identity, and today about 200 people from Mumbai have reached his city to make a film on the song written by him. This moment was really different, emotional and incredible.

The view of the location changed as the weather changed.

Describing the location in detail, Imtiaz Ali said, ‘When my team reached there for the first time, the place did not look so spectacular. With the change in weather the entire appearance of that place changed. Initially there were no flowers and greenery there, but later due to the weather the view completely changed and the location started looking very beautiful on the screen. Sometimes the real beauty of a place is revealed with time and weather.

The film will show a glimpse of old Punjab

The story of the film ‘I will return’ is based on Punjab before the partition of India. This is a story of two lovers, in which the culture, emotions and atmosphere of old Punjab will be shown. The old buildings and historical ruins of Punjab have also been specially included in the film so that the audience can feel that time closely. However, if we talk about the release of the film, it will be released in theaters on June 12, 2026.
