A partnership of 177 runs for the third wicket between John Campbell and Shai Hope saved West Indies from an innings defeat. This has happened only for the fourth time in the history of cricket when the Indian team gave follow-on to the opposing team and they will have to bat in the fourth innings also. This happened in the India vs West Indies second test.

Shubman Gill won the toss and decided to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal played a brilliant inning of 175 runs, after which captain Gill also scored a century. He scored 129 unbeaten runs. India declared its first innings at 518 runs. After this, the first innings of West Indies started on the second day of the test. By the second session of the third day, West Indies’ first innings ended at 248 runs, then India decided to give follow-on to West Indies.

In the first innings, Kuldeep Yadav took 5 wickets, Ravindra Jadeja took 3 and Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj took 1-1 wicket. The way West Indies was batting, it seemed that India would win this test also by an innings. India had taken a lead of 270 runs in the first innings.

Team India will have to bat even after giving follow-on

In the second innings of West Indies, the first two wickets fell for 35 runs, but after this John Campbell and Shai Hope made a partnership of 177 runs. Campbell scored 115 runs, this was the first century of his Test career. He became the first batsman to score a Test century in India since 2002. Jadeja made John his victim. After this, Shai Hope (103) also completed his century, he was bowled by Mohammad Siraj.

As soon as West Indies crossed the score of 270 in the second innings, it was confirmed that India would have to bat in the fourth innings as well. The last time this happened was in November 2012. This happened only for the fourth time in the history of Indian cricket.

The second test between India and West Indies is being played in Delhi. Team India had declared its first innings at 518 runs, in response to which West Indies had scored 140 runs at the loss of 2 wickets by the end of the second day’s play. What is follow on?

If in a test match the team batting first gets a lead of 200 or more runs over the team batting second in the second innings. In such a situation, the team which batted first can immediately ask the other team to bat again.

If we take an example, India declared its first innings at 518 runs in the Delhi Test. In such a situation, if West Indies wants to save follow-on, they will have to score at least 319 runs in the first innings. Since West Indies has scored 140 runs in the first innings. Therefore, on the third day he still has to score 179 more runs to save the follow-on.

So will Team India win?

Now the question is that if West Indies is not able to score the remaining 179 runs on the third day, will Team India win the second test? No, if West Indies is not able to reach the total score of 319 in the first innings, then the Indian team can ask West Indies to bat again keeping in mind the intention of winning the innings. Giving follow-on to a team is optional. Therefore, in case of not being able to save the follow-on, West Indies will have to bat again only when Team India asks them to do so or not.
