Rahul Gandhi Piyush Goyal Clash: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has reversed the statement made by Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha about tariff between India and America. He said that India now talks not under the pressure of any deadline, but keeps in mind its national interests. “

Piyush Goyal retaliated

Piyush Goyal retaliated on Rahul Gandhi’s statement, saying, “National interests are paramount for us. Today India is full of confidence, we can talk equally to any country in the world. It is no longer the India that was under UPA rule, when the agreement was begged.”

The Union Minister criticized Rahul Gandhi and said that no one takes him seriously. He further said, “Rahul Gandhi, his ally and Congress party continuously spread negativity, so the people of the country have repeatedly rejected them. They have not given any positive agenda for the development of the country till date.”

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi wrote on the social media platform X, “Write me as much as Piyush Goyal, wise me, Modi will bow quietly in front of Trump’s tariff deadline.” US President Donald Trump warned India to impose additional tariffs on some goods. The opposition is constantly raising questions about the central government’s response to this issue.

Deadline ends on 9 July

India has made it clear that it will not compromise the business by coming under any type of external pressure. This strict stance has come to light at a time when US President Donald Trump had imposed counter -tariffs on about 100 countries, in which India was also charged 26%. Although later the US temporarily postponed these tariffs for 90 days, this relief period is now ending on 9 July. For this reason, discussions about the possible trade agreement between the two countries have again intensified.

The Indian party has returned from Washington after negotiating the interim trade agreement with the US. Giving this information, an official said that the agreement is likely to be finalized before July 9, but some issues in agriculture and vehicle sectors still need to be resolved, so the discussion will continue.

The Indian party is being led by the chief negotiator Rajesh Aggarwal. He is a special secretary in the Department of Commerce. The official said the talks are in the final stages and its conclusion is expected to be announced before 9 July, which is the last day of the 90-day suspension of the US President Donald Trump’s counter-duty in the 90-day suspension.

25 percent fee in vehicle sector

The official said, ‘The Indian team is back from Washington, the talks will continue. There are some issues in agriculture and vehicle areas, which need to be resolved. India has raised the issue on 25 percent fee in the vehicle sector. It has taken up the matter in the Security Committee of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

India has also told the WTO that it has reserved the right to reply on selected American products in response to the US fee on steel and aluminum.

India’s talk with different countries

Union Minister Piyush Goyal said on the trade agreement with the US, ‘India discusses its terms, discussion with different countries, whether it is European Union, New Zealand, Oman, Oman, America, Chile or Peru. Agreement is going on with many countries of India. Free trade agreement is only when there is two -way profit and when the deal is done keeping India’s interests safe, keeping in mind that the national interest will always be the highest.

The Union Minister said that India is always ready to deal with developed countries. India never does any trade deal on a deadline basis. When the deal is good and in national interest, we accept it.

America increased 25 percent duty on imports

In a letter sent to the World Trade Organization, India said that on March 26, 2025, the US has adopted a measure in India or from there as a 25 percent duty increase on import of imported passenger vehicles and light trucks and some vehicles and some vehicles.

This fee on vehicle parts has come into force from May 3, 2025 for an unlimited period. Last year, the US imported vehicles worth $ 89 billion globally. It had a share of Mexico $ 36 billion, China’s $ 10.1 billion and India was only $ 2.2 billion.

After all, why is talks with America important?

The Indian team was in Washington to negotiate an interim trade agreement with the US from 26 June to 2 July. This dialogue is important because the suspension of Trump’s counter duty ends on 9 July. Both sides are considering finalizing the talks before that.

On April 2, the US imposed an additional 26 percent retaliation on Indian goods, but was suspended for 90 days. However, 10 percent of the original fee levied by the US is still applicable. India wants a complete discount from an additional 26 percent fee.

The purpose of the agreement bilateral trade

The two countries are expecting to complete the dialogue for the first phase of the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by September-October this year. The purpose of this agreement is to double bilateral trade from the current $ 191 billion to $ 500 billion by 2030.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (June 01, 2025) that a major trade agreement between the US and India could be soon. Trump indicated that India is now ready to reduce tax for American companies, which will give American companies a chance to do business in India.

Talking to the media in Air Force One, Trump said, “I think we will have a different kind of business agreement with India. An agreement in which we will be able to go to India and compete openly.” The US President said that India did not open the market for foreign companies yet, but now it is indicating change. He told that if India did this, the US will make a strong trade agreement with low tax.

And that is going to be a different kind of a deal. It is going to be Compete. Right now, India does not accept anybody in. pic.twitter.com/6C199NGM8B

Trump imposed 26% tariff on India on 2 April

On April 2, Trump announced a 26% tariff (import duty) on India, which has been postponed for 90 days. However, a minimum tariff of 10% is still applicable. If this agreement is reached between the two countries, then it can be a big turn in business relationships. Despite Trump’s recent statement, the conversation between the two countries stopped on Tuesday, and the biggest reason for this is India’s dairy sector.

India’s tough stance on dairy

According to government sources, the US wants India to open its dairy market for American products, but India has made it clear that it will not compromise on this demand. A senior official said, “There is no question of concession on dairy. This is a red line for us.”

The dairy sector in India employs about 8 crore people, most of which are small farmers. In such a situation, it is not possible for the government to relax any kind in this sector.

Efforts are being made to postpone agreement

According to a report by Reuters, a delegation of Indian authorities was interacting with the US administration in Washington from last week to Monday. Special Secretary Rajesh Agarwal is leading this delegation from India, and he has extended his journey one more day to overcome the deadlock.

India US Trade Deal: The ‘Zero-for-Zero’ tariff model will not be included in the proposed bilateral trade agreement between India and the US. According to government sources, such a strategy is not practical due to a big difference in the level of economic development of the two countries.

Work on big package deal

Under the ‘Zero-for-Ziro’ model, the two countries completely eliminate tariffs on each other’s products. But officials say that such agreements are possible between developed countries like America and European Union, not with a developing country like India.

A senior official told PTI that the trade deal is not on the basis that “if the US removes the tariff on electronics, we will also remove.” He said that India and America are working towards a comprehensive package deal, which will include issues like goods, services and non-tariff barriers.

The negotiation of this deal started in March 2025 and its first phase has been targeted to be completed by September -October. At present, there is a trade of about $ 191 billion between India and the US, which is targeted to take up to $ 500 billion by 2030.

India in better position

Currently, there are yet to have sector -boggling discussions between the two countries. The Government of India believes that it is in a state of better preparation for business agreements compared to other countries. At the same time, the concept of ‘Zero-for-Ziro’ was introduced by Delhi-based think tank ‘Global Trade Research Initiative’ (GTRI), but the Indian government is now looking forward to a balanced and comprehensive dialogue.

The major demands of the US in this conversation include industrial products, electric vehicles, wine, petrochemicals, dairy and agricultural products such as apples, nuts and alfalfa.
$ 35 billion trade surplus from America

Let us tell you that America has been the biggest business partner of India for the last three years. In 2023-24, India recorded a $ 35.3 billion trade surplus with the US. India’s top exports consisted of medicines ($ 8.1 billion), telecom equipment ($ 6.5 billion), precious gems ($ 5.3 billion) and petroleum products ($ 4.1 billion). At the same time, India imported products such as crude oil ($ 4.5 billion), petroleum ($ 3.6 billion), coal ($ 3.4 billion) and aerospace parts ($ 1.3 billion) from the US.

Overall, the Indo-US trade agreement will not be based on any unilateral concessions, but is being created from a long-form and strategic point of view, which will be designed keeping in mind the domestic priorities and global trade balance of the two countries.
