US President Donald Trump has said that it was not an easy decision to impose tariffs (tax) due to buying Russian oil on India. He said that this caused a strain in the relationship between the two countries.

In an interview to Fox News, Trump said, “India was the biggest customer in Russia. I imposed 50% tariff on India, because they were buying oil from Russia. It was a big step and this increased differences with India.” Trump also said that Russia’s issue is more in Europe, less of America. He claimed that during his tenure he resolved many major controversies, including the issue of Pakistan-India.

India defended the purchase of oil from Russia

On the other hand, India has defended the purchase of Russian oil. India says that the purchase of energy depends on its national interest and market status.

Pressure from America

Sergio Gore, a nominated candidate for the post of Ambassador in India of Trump administration, said that the US wants India to buy American oil and petroleum products. He says that India’s more than 140 million population and fast growing middle class is a big market for America.

What did the American Commerce Secretary say?

Talking to CNBC, American Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik also indicated that if India stops buying Russian oil, then the trade agreement between the two countries may open.

Effect on India-US relations

In the last few months, there has been a lot of ups and downs in the relations between India and America, where India’s buying oil from Russia has caused the main dispute. The Modi government has said its side on this, saying that taking oil from Russia is completely in the national interest, because it gives cheaper fuel and ensures the energy security of the people. Meanwhile, in August, the US imposed 25% additional tariffs on some Indian products, which increased the total fee to 50%. Which is the highest among all the business partners of America.

US President Donald Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a good friend and great Prime Minister amidst a tariff controversy with India. He said that there is special relations between India and America and sometimes moments of stress can come, but the relationship between the two countries will remain strong.

Prime Minister Modi, reacting to Trump’s comment, wrote on X (Twitter) that he deeply appreciates the positive evaluation of the feelings and relationships of the US President and fully supports it.

Deeply Appreciate and Fully Reciprocate President Trump’s Sentiments and Positive Assessment of Our Ties.

India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking comprehensive and global strategic partnership.@Realdonaldtrump @Potus https://t.co/4hlo9wbpef

Why India and America relations deteriorate?

Recently, the US has imposed up to 50 percent tariffs on imports coming from India. In August, the Trump administration imposed 25 percent tariff. After this, an additional 25 percent fee was also imposed on India for buying oil from Russia. These decisions have caused sourness in business relations between the two countries. However, India and America are still ally at the strategic and diplomatic levels.

Modi’s emphasis on strategic partnership

PM Modi said that there is a positive and visionary widespread global partnership between India and America. The partnership of the two countries is constantly strengthening with the cooperation in defense, technology, energy and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific sector. This is the reason that despite business tension, both leaders are giving priority to personal relations.

Indo-US relations balance of friendship and stress

The relations between India and America have never been very stressful. Even though there is a difference of opinion on business or policy, both countries are important partners of each other in a strategic point of view. Both countries cooperate in the fight against security and terrorism. To maintain power balance in the Asia-Pacific region, it is very important for the two countries to live together.

US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50 percent tariff on India. This decision of Trump is being opposed in his own country. Former US National Security Advisor (NSA) Jack Sulivan has said that President Donald Trump has put more business pressure on India by applying 50 percent tariff. Sulivan believes that due to Trump’s policies, India is gradually leaning towards China.

Jack Sulivan said in a podcast, ‘When he talks to leaders of other countries, he says that America is no longer worth trusting. Many countries consider America to be the biggest problem, while China is coming forward like a responsible and reliable country. He said that earlier America’s image was strong, but now China’s popularity is growing rapidly and America’s credibility is becoming weak.

India is looking towards China in compulsion: Sulivan

Giving the example of India, Sulivan said, “The attempt to form a deep and permanent relationship with India was going on with the consent of both parties, but Trump made such a big business attack on India that now Indian leaders have to say that maybe we have to go to Beijing and sit with China, so that a balance can be made against America.”

50% tariff shocks Indian exports

The Trump administration has implemented a 50% tariff on India from 27 August. This is the highest tariff imposed on any country. It is believed that this will have a profound impact on India’s economy and employment. Trump said the reason for the additional 25% fee was said by India to buy oil from Russia. This heavy tax is expected to affect India’s clothes, jewelery and mechanical equipment industry the most.

Trump’s ‘resentment’ reason?

Meanwhile, a report by American investment bank Jefferies claimed that Trump’s personal resentment is the real reason for imposing tariffs on India. In fact, in May, Trump wanted to mediate the India Pakistan dispute, but India refused. Apart from this, the agricultural sector has also been described as a big issue of conflict between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump has announced a plan to impose 100 percent tariff on all imported semiconductors and chips to strengthen domestic production. During a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Oval Office, the US President said, “100 percent tariff will be imposed on all chips and semiconductors coming to the US, but if you have committed to build (in the US), or if you (in America) are in the process of manufacturing, as many companies are doing, no tariff will be seen.”

If Trump implements his tariff threats, Apple, NVidia and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (Tsmc) Companies like which have promised significant investment in American investment, this exemption can benefit from this exemption. The purpose of this measure is to motivate international technical companies to establish or expand manufacturing functions in the United States and thus reduce dependence on foreign supply chains.

Apple discounts in American chip construction

Trump said that due to increasing investment in production in the US, Apple may get the benefit of this exemption in American chip manufacturing. US President Trump said, “The good news for companies like Apple is that if you are constructing in the US or committed to construction in the US without any question, there will be no duty.” 100 percent tariffs will apply to all imported semiconductors and chips, which will affect major suppliers in Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore.

Apple’s contribution to American chip construction

In addition to an investment of Apple $ 100 billion in US chip and $ 165 billion of TSMC, Nvidia and Globalfoundry have also promised to manufacture some of their products in the US. The US government has implemented 25 percent import duty on Indian goods from 7 August. In addition, US President Trump threatened India to increase additional 25 percent tariff from August 27, citing the purchase of crude oil and military equipment from Russia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi replied that the country will never compromise on the interests of farmers and fishermen.

Congress leader and senior MP Jairam Ramesh has once again launched a sharp attack on the Modi government’s foreign policy. He claimed in an X post on Friday (July 25, 2025) that the events of the last two months have completely exposed the alleged image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic success. Jairam Ramesh exposed the Modi government’s diplomatic failures through four concrete facts and expressed serious concern about the deep relationship between the US-Pakistan.

What are Jairam Ramesh’s allegations?

1. Trump repeated 25 times claim: Jairam Ramesh said that since May 10, 2025, US President Donald Trump has publicly claimed that he stopped ‘Operation Sindoor’ by personal intervention. He warned India and Pakistan that if the war is not stopped, America would end business relations with them.

Failure of Indian diplomacy, especially in the last two months, is most clearly revealed through four solid facts. These facts open up the big claims of the Prime Minister and those who beat him and cheer for him:

1. US President Donald from 10 May 2025 till now…

– jairam ramesh (@Jairam_ramesh) July 26, 2025

2. Pakistan was called a ‘magnificent partner’: On 10 June 2025, Michael Kurilla, the chief general of the US Central Command, described Pakistan as the “brilliant partner” of the US against terrorism. Ramesh raised the question that if Pakistan is such a ‘partner’ then who is protecting India’s security interests?

3. Meeting of Trump and Pak Army Chief: On 18 June 2025, President Trump held a lunch meeting with Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir at the White House. Ramesh described it as shocking, because according to Ramesh, the background of the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April 2025 was prepared by the inflammatory statements of Asim Munir.

4. America expressed gratitude to Pakistan: On 25 July 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and thanked Pakistan for cooperation against regional stability and terrorism.

Questions raised on Modi-Trump ‘friendship’

Jairam Ramesh took a sarcasm and said that the ‘Modi-Trump friendship’ promoted by Prime Minister Modi has proved to be a hollow and illusory story. He said that India is now paying a huge price for the ‘clean chit’ given to China in 2020, and it is clear from the current situation that the lack of ego, dhindora and ground strategy in foreign policy has damaged the country’s reputation.

Congress in preparing to surround Modi government

The Congress is preparing to make the alleged international failures of the Modi government a national election issue through these statements. The party says that India’s foreign policy has now become reactive, while neighbor and global forces are strengthening their place.
