India has considered the recent contacts between military officials of Bangladesh and Pakistan as a serious strategic signal. For this reason, the Army has taken major steps to strengthen the security of the Siliguri Corridor, which is called the lifeline of North-East India. According to intelligence sources, three new military stations (garrisons) have been established near the Bangladesh border at Bamuni in Assam, Kishanganj in Bihar and Chopra in West Bengal. This area is extremely sensitive because in difficult situations, these bases will provide fast and flexible response capability to the Army and BSF.

Siliguri Corridor is also called ‘Chicken Neck’, because its width is only 22 kilometers at some places. This route connects the 8 states of the North-East with the rest of the country. Any kind of blockage here can cut off the entire North-East from the mainland, which will stop military supplies and trade worth billions can come to a standstill. A senior army officer says that this is not a weakness of India but a strength because we are deployed in this area from three directions.

Why increased concern?

According to the report of The Hindu, security agencies believe that in any unexpected tension, anti-India forces can target this corridor. Especially India is watching very seriously the new political environment created after the departure of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. Recently, Acting Chief Advisor of Bangladesh Mohammad Yunus met Pakistan’s General Sahir Shamshad Mirza in Dhaka, in which military cooperation was discussed. India is seeing this not just as a formal meeting but as a sign of changing regional equations.

Why was security increased?

Along with the new garrison, surveillance networks, fencing, drone monitoring, digital watch towers and rapid reaction forces are also being strengthened. Especially Kishanganj is considered very important, because it is just 23 kilometers away from the Bangladesh border. Many central leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah have visited this area and have clearly said that there can be no compromise on the security of this corridor.

India’s clear message

The new deployment and surveillance make it clear that India is pursuing a zero-risk policy on national security and territorial integrity. Amidst the changing geopolitical situation, India’s message is clear that no one can play with the security of the North-East.

When the helicopter flew from a very low height, the Army, Air Force and Disaster Management Force personnel demonstrated their strength and agility on the waves of Ganga in Farakka Barrage.

According to the Regional Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense, between August 6-8, special forces of the Army and Navy used the Hellocasting Technology and the Indian Air Force’s MI-17 helicopter using low-level water entry. Hellocasting is a method in which soldiers descend from helicopters flying at low altitude above water and float to reach their targets or use boats, which makes it possible to secretly enter and faster. The joint skills, accuracy and teamwork displayed during the practice demonstrated high -level operational readiness between the three armies.

A few days ago, it was said by the Media Wing of the Pakistani Army, Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) that India would be attacked through Bangladesh. In such a situation, the importance of this practice increases. These days, Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir, who visited the US, has also threatened to attack India from the eastern end in the near future. According to Asim Munir, India has more strategic hideout on the eastern border.

240 meter long Farakka barrage was completed in 1975

Construction of 240 meter long Farakka barrage was completed in 1975 and the water flow of Ganga is controlled towards India and Bangladesh through its 109 gates. West Bengal also gets the water of Ganga throughout the year from the feeder canal of this barrage.

Due to the strategic and security importance of the barrage, the army carried out exercises here so that preparations could be tested. After the Pahalgam massacre, Pakistan is shocked after India stopped the Indus water and it is feared that the nefarious intention is to damage India’s wealth. More than 5,000 ‘Body Warne Cameras’ are being provided to the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deployed under the security of the Indo-Bangladesh International Border, so that the soldiers on duty can record the scenes and evidence of sending illegal Bangladeshis back to the illegal Bangladeshis.

Official sources in the security establishment said that the selected border posts (BOP) of the force on the 4,096 km border are also being equipped with biometric equipment, so that they can take pictures of the fingers of illegal Bangladeshis and the effigies of the eyes and these figures can be shared with the Foreign Registration Office (FRO).

Initiative to strengthen the security system on the border

On this front, two policy decisions to increase the capabilities of BSF were taken on August 5, 2024 in view of strengthening the security system along the border after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh. Sources said that the Union Home Ministry has recently approved these two proposals of the BSF headquarters after the ‘comprehensive review’ of the security situation along the Bangladesh border.

According to sources, about 5,000 ‘body warn cameras’ (such cameras which can be worn in helmets or uniforms) are being sent to BSF personnel deployed under the security of the Indo-Bangladesh international border. Sources said that these cameras capable of watching these nights can record about 12-14 hours of footage.

Helpful to record evidence

Sources said that these cameras would be helpful in recording the facts and evidence when BSF personnel will send back to illegal Bangladeshis or deal with miscreants to prevent crimes across the border such as drugs, cattle and fake Indian currency besides human trafficking and infiltration. Sources said that this recording will also serve as evidence in cases where BSF jawans are attacked by criminals from both countries.

Shamim Hyder Patwari, general secretary of Jatiya Party of Bangladesh, has given an important statement about India-Bangladesh relations. He has said that if Sheikh Hasina ever takes refuge in India, it should not be considered illegal. He insisted that both countries should handle the relationship with mutual respect and understanding.

Patwari said, “If a person takes refuge in a country to save his life, it is not illegal. India is our only active neighbor in today’s situation because Myanmar is struggling with civil war.” He informed that India and Bangladesh have a 3,000 km long border and every year more than one million Bangladeshi citizens go to India for treatment.

He further said, “We are dependent on India for essential commodities and health services. Similarly, India is also dependent on the stability of Bangladesh, especially in the context of the security of the North Eastern states.”

What did Patwari say on the India-Bangladesh relationship?

Patwari also said that some groups raised anti -India slogans and talked about North Eastern India amid the recent anti -protest against Sheikh Hasina government. He said, “Such statements brings unnecessary tension in the relationship between the two countries. We should respect each other’s sovereignty,”

‘We have to work together’, said Patwari

The leader of the ethnic party said that his party wants a relationship based on mutual respect with India. He said, “We are neighbors, we have to work together. Security, sovereignty and peace, cooperation in these three areas is necessary.” Patwari clarified that his party is in favor of respectable and cooperative relations with India. He hoped that in future, both countries will move forward by resolving their differences through negotiations.

Illegal intruders continue to arrest in India

Set up intruders, not refugees

There is no clear policy for refugees in India and those who cross the border illegally are often considered “illegal intruders”. In such cases action is taken under the Foreign Citizens Act, 1946. This is the same legal process under which the Supreme Court has also repeatedly clarified that the intrusion is not a valid refuge and if a person is found without valid documents, it should be sent back to the law.
