Today Bangladesh Cricket Board is trying to wink at BCCI, but it has forgotten that it was the Indian Cricket Board that gave them Test status. Otherwise no one even wanted to play cricket with them, then India helped them by playing the first test with the neighboring country. Under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, Team India won this test by 9 wickets. There were also star players like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan etc.

India helped Bangladesh in getting test status

Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was the chief of BCCI, was the chief of ICC in 2000. He got Test status for Bangladesh by getting unanimous voting. No one was playing Test matches with him, when the Indian cricket team played the first Test with him.

BCCI also helped him in this. It started with the 1999 ODI World Cup. Here Bangladesh was playing in this big tournament for the first time. They registered their first win by defeating Scotland. After this, they also created a big upset by defeating Pakistan, one of the favorite teams of that edition. This was one reason, but full emphasis was given by former BCCI President and then ICC Chief Jagmohan Dalmiya. In 2000, he helped Bangladesh become the 10th nation to achieve Test playing status by unanimous vote.

England was to have a test with Bangladesh, but they refused to play it citing reasons. Then India played Test with Bangladesh and got them Test status. This test was played in Dhaka on 10-13 November, in which India won by 9 wickets.

Why is the controversy happening now?

When there was rapid protest in India against the atrocities being committed on Hindus in Bangladesh, it also affected IPL. Bangladeshi player Mustafizur Rahman was bought by KKR for Rs 9.20 crore, due to which there was opposition from KKR and team owner Shahrukh Khan, then BCCI directed to release Mustafizur.

BCB called an emergency meeting and decided that it would request to shift its T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka. Bangladesh also banned live telecast of IPL matches.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has held Mohammad Yunus responsible for the violence taking place in Bangladesh. Tharoor said that it is the responsibility of the Yunus government and the police to stop violence in Bangladesh. If the government and the police together are not able to do anything, then the army should be involved, but the violence should stop at all costs.

Tharoor angry over the murder of Hindu youth

On December 24, 2025, Shashi Tharoor gave a statement to news agency ANI and said, ‘This is a very serious problem. We want Bangladesh to remain stable and peaceful and the minorities there to feel safe. The lynching of a person in police custody was indeed very wrong and unfair. There was no evidence of that person committing any derogatory act. The police handed him over to the mob, which was very horrifying.

He said that the violence on the streets in Bangladesh, protests and demonstrations outside Indian embassies have worsened the situation. This has made it difficult to create an environment of peace and stability before the elections to be held in February.

India is not involved in the death of student leader

Shashi Tharoor said, ‘Completely rejected the talk of blaming India for the death of a student leader. Accusing India of being involved in the death of the student leader is absolutely absurd. India has no interest in creating instability in Bangladesh. Such things are creating an atmosphere of hostility against minorities, which is a matter of concern for the entire country.

Everyone has the right to demonstrate peacefully

Tharoor said that in India too, some groups have protested against the incidents on the border. This is their right in a democracy, but it should be peaceful. Such demonstrations have taken place in India, but there was no violence, no lynching. If anyone tries to commit violence, the police will stop him.

Demand for strictness from Bangladesh government

Shashi Tharoor has demanded strict action from the Bangladesh government. He said, ‘Just expressing regret or condemning the Bangladesh government will not work, they will have to stop the violence.’ Tharoor warned that it would be difficult to conduct elections in the current environment. ‘How will elections be held in at least two months, when there is chaos on the streets, an atmosphere of fear and voters themselves do not feel safe?’

Salehuddin Ahmed, finance advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, said on Tuesday (23 December 2025) that Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus has taken steps to improve strained relations with New Delhi and his administration is working on developing economic ties with India while keeping economic interests separate from ‘political rhetoric’.

Ahmed told reporters after the meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement in his office, ‘The Chief Advisor is working on improving diplomatic relations with India and he himself is talking to various concerned parties on this subject.’ When asked whether Yunus had spoken directly to India, Ahmed said the chief advisor had “no”, but he had spoken to people associated with the matter.

Bangladesh will buy 50,000 tonnes of rice from India

Ahmed said, ‘Our trade policy is not driven by political considerations. If importing rice from India is cheaper than importing it from Vietnam or anywhere else, then it is economically logical that we buy this staple food grain from India. Ahmed expressed hope that bilateral relations will not deteriorate further. He also said that Bangladesh on Tuesday approved a proposal to buy 50,000 tonnes of rice from India, ‘taking steps towards building good relations’. He said that importing this rice will be beneficial for Bangladesh because importing rice from Vietnam instead of India will cost 10 Bangladeshi Taka (0.082 US dollars) more per kilogram.

India-Bangladesh relations reach worst level since 1971

Ahmed’s comments come at a time when diplomatic analysts have said that relations between India and Bangladesh are at their lowest level since Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. Both countries have summoned each other’s envoys and protests have taken place in front of the Bangladeshi and Indian missions in both the capitals and elsewhere. Despite this, the advisor said, ‘The situation has not reached such a bad stage.’

Are external forces spoiling the relationship?

Ahmed said, ‘From the outside it may seem that a lot is happening… However, there are some statements which are difficult to stop.’ When asked whether ‘people or external forces’ were making anti-India statements, he said, ‘We do not want any bitterness between the two countries. If someone from outside is trying to instigate problems then it is not in the interest of any country. He also said that these incidents do not represent ‘national expression’ but are creating ‘complex situations for Bangladesh’.

Amidst the unrest in the country and deteriorating relations with India, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus, is trying to improve relations. Salehuddin Ahmed, finance advisor to the interim government, says that Mohammad Yunus is actively trying to improve the strained relations with India.

He said that Yunus is talking to different stakeholders on this issue and is focusing on improving diplomatic relations. His statement has come at a time when relations between the two countries are going through a very bad phase. Visa service has been suspended. The ambassadors of both the countries have also been summoned several times.

Economic interests will be kept separate from politics
Salehuddin Ahmed said that the government wants to strengthen economic relations with India and for this, economic interests will be kept separate from political rhetoric. According to him, Bangladesh administration wants to advance trade and economic cooperation with India from a practical perspective.

No direct talks with India, but contact continues
When Salehuddin Ahmed was asked whether Mohammad Yunus had talked directly to India, the financial advisor said that Yunus has not talked directly to the Indian side at present, but is in touch with people related to the matter.

Bangladesh will buy 50 thousand tons of rice from India
Meanwhile, Bangladesh government has decided to buy 50,000 tonnes of rice from India. This decision was taken in the meeting of the advisory committee related to government procurement. According to the government decision, Bangladesh will buy a total of 1,00,000 tonnes of rice from India and Pakistan. The Food Ministry will purchase 50,000 tonnes of non-Basmati rice from Indian company M/S Pattabhi Agro Foods Private Limited, the price of which has been fixed at $355.77 per tonne.

Preparation to buy soybean oil from America and Nigeria
Apart from this, Yunus government will purchase a total of 3.75 crore liters of soybean oil from Nigeria and America. In this, 1.25 crore liters of soybean oil will be purchased from America at the rate of Taka 132.69 per liter, while the remaining oil will be purchased from Nigeria at the rate of Taka 121.32 per liter.

The politics of Bangladesh is once again in turmoil. Former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chaudhary has made a sensational claim that there was a conspiracy by America to topple the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. In an interview given to Russia Today (RT), he said that this entire incident was created by the alliance of USAID, Clinton Foundation and Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus. According to Chaudhary, the Clinton family and USAID made a strategy for regime change in Bangladesh in the name of development programs.”

The former minister alleged that anti-Hasina organizations were being promoted since 2018 through USAID funding. He says that Western NGOs and some local groups were given assistance in the name of democracy and human rights, but the real objective was to spread political instability. He claimed that there is an old relationship between Clinton Foundation and Mohammad Yunus and this network was used to strengthen the anti-Hasina coalition.

How did the political scenario of Bangladesh change?

Protests against Hasina government intensified in Bangladesh during June-July 2024. When the army refused to take action, the government’s hold weakened. On August 5, Sheikh Hasina had to take refuge in India and on the same day Mohammad Yunus was appointed interim Prime Minister.

Sheikh Hasina’s old allegations and controversies

Sheikh Hasina has earlier also accused America of politics of pressure. He said that he had refused to give St. Martin’s Island for American military use, after which political pressure increased. This island is considered very important from strategic point of view for both India and China.

New diplomatic tussle in South Asia

After Sheikh Hasina’s departure, the impact on India-Bangladesh relations is now visible. During the Hasina government, there was a deep relationship of cooperation between the two countries, but now the inclination of the new government seems to be towards China and Pakistan.

Dengue virus has again taken a terrible form in Bangladesh this year. On 4 November 2025, the Department of Health (DGHS) confirmed four new deaths, taking the total number of deaths to 292. The situation is most serious in the capital Dhaka, where hospitals are filled with patients and there is a severe shortage of beds in many places. According to the Health Department, 1,101 new patients have been admitted to hospitals in just 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 73,923.

The number of patients is increasing rapidly in both the City Corporation areas of Dhaka. According to the new data of DGHS, 241 patients have been reported in Dhaka North, 175 in South and hundreds in other divisions like Barishal, Chattogram, Khulna and Rajshahi. The infection has started spreading in rural areas as well, which is increasing the pressure on the health system.

Dengue record of last years is scary

Data of the last three years shows that the risk of dengue is continuously increasing in Bangladesh. In 2023, this disease took the lives of 1,705 people, which was the highest figure till date. The number of deaths decreased to 575 in 2024, but a rise is seen again in 2025. It is just the beginning of November and the death toll has already reached 292.

Alarm bells for the eastern states of India

Health experts have warned that the rapidly increasing dengue cases in Bangladesh may impact the eastern areas of India. States like West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and Jharkhand may be vulnerable to this infection, because the India-Bangladesh border is open and the movement of people is continuous. Due to rain and humidity, the possibility of breeding of mosquitoes is also high in these states.

Bangladesh government took strict steps

In view of the worsening situation due to dengue, DGHS has issued new guidelines to all government hospitals. Now it has been made mandatory to create a separate dengue ward in every hospital and special medical teams have been formed. The government has also directed that mosquito spraying, larva control, and cleanliness campaigns should be conducted regularly in every district.

Problems increasing due to rain and water logging

Continuous fogging and cleaning is being done to reduce the number of mosquitoes in Dhaka, but due to continuous rains and waterlogging, breeding of mosquitoes is not being stopped. There is immense pressure on the teams of doctors and nurses due to the increasing number of patients in hospitals.

Mohammad Yunus, head of the interim government of Bangladesh, has given a big statement on India. He said that if given a free choice, India would keep Sheikh Hasina with it and would not send her back to Bangladesh. This statement of Yunus has come at a time when India had said a few days ago that the matters related to Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina are of legal nature and there is a need for consultation between India and Bangladesh.

Yunus said in his interview that India has always supported Sheikh Hasina and if there is no legal obligation then they will keep her with them. It is noteworthy that former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina had to leave power after massive protests last year. After his departure from the post, Mohammad Yunus was appointed the head of the interim government. There are many allegations of corruption and human rights violations against Hasina. Bangladesh government has sought his extradition from India, but till now India has not taken any formal step on this.

British-Indian journalist Mehdi Hasan

Mohammad Yunus said in an interview to British-Indian journalist Mehdi Hasan that if India wants, it can keep Sheikh Hasina with itself. I can’t tell them what to do with them, but they should ensure that they don’t talk about Bangladesh or our people. He said that some external forces are helping to bring Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, so that she returns as a victorious leader.

Yunus hints at relations with India

Mohammad Yunus’s statement is being considered politically sensitive for India-Bangladesh relations. He said that India has always stood with the Awami League and the Sheikh Hasina government. Therefore, the present government expects neutral behavior from India. India has not yet taken any concrete stand on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition. New Delhi says that this is a legal matter, which will be decided through the judicial process. According to political analysts, this statement of Yunus may increase diplomatic tension between India and Bangladesh. Especially when both the countries are already going through a sensitive period on issues like border security, Rohingya refugees and water disputes.

Called the news of violence on Hindu community fake

Mohammad Yunus reacted to reports of increasing attacks on the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh and called them fake news. He said that such news is part of the fake news campaign being spread in India. Yunus said, “When I meet leaders of the Hindu community, I tell them, do not see yourself only as a Hindu, but as a citizen. You belong to this country, hence deserve full protection of the state.” He further said that many times local disputes are transformed into religious violence.

Army has been deployed in Bangladesh to protect Hilsa fish from illegal fishing. According to news agency AFP, 17 warships, drones and patrol helicopters were deployed for this. This means that the fish are being protected more than any VVIP person.

So let us understand in ABP Explainer, what is Hilsa fish, why is it the responsibility of the army to protect it and for what reasons the Yunus government does not want to lose them…

Question 1- What is Hilsa fish and where is it found?
answer- Hilsa fish is also called Ilish fish. It is a shiny silver looking sea fish, whose length can usually be up to 50 centimeters and weight can be more than 3 kilograms. This fish is found in the sea, estuaries (where the river meets the sea) and rivers. It has a lot of small thorns, which make it a little difficult to eat but delicious. Hilsa is also called the ‘queen of fishes’ in Bengal, because its taste is salty-sweet and creamy.

It is found in many countries including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia and Thailand. Hilsa is the national fish of Bangladesh and has been given the status of ‘mother’ there. Hilsa return from the sea (warm water) to the rivers (cold water) every year during breeding season to spawn.

Its price in Dhaka, Bangladesh is 2,800 to 3,000 taka i.e. 2,050 to 2,200 rupees per kilogram.

Question 2- What arrangements did the Government of Bangladesh make for its protection?
answer- Yunus government of Bangladesh made 4 major arrangements for the protection of Hilsa…

22-day fishing ban: The Yunus government imposed a complete ban on catching, carrying, storing, selling and marketing of Hilsa across the country from October 4 to October 25.

Navy and Air Force deployment: To prevent illegal fishing, warships, patrol helicopters, patrolling vehicles and drones were deployed on 24-hour surveillance. 17 warships are deployed in the Bay of Bengal and the places where the river meets the sea.

Compensation to fishermen: During the ban, every fisherman family is being given 25 kg of rice free of cost, so that they can survive. However, the fishermen families are not happy with this. “The three weeks are very difficult for the fishermen because we have no other means of survival,” 60-year-old fisherman Sattar Majhi told AFP.

Hilsa Conservation Campaign 2025: This campaign is based on the successful efforts of 2024, in which fertility timing is decided keeping in mind the phases of the moon.

Year 3- Why does the Bangladesh government want to save it, for which it deployed the army?
answer- Bangladesh government wants to save this fish for 3 big reasons…

National Fish and Cultural Importance: Hilsa is the national fish of Bangladesh, which is a symbol of the country’s identity and cultural heritage. Its preservation is linked to national pride.

economic value: According to ORF’s research report, Bangladesh is the world’s largest Hilsa fish producing country. It ranks third in terms of fish production worldwide. Hilsa fish is its major export product, meeting about 75% of the global supply. Fisheries contribute about 3-4% to the GDP of Bangladesh. Hilsa’s share in the total fish production of Bangladesh is 12 percent. Here, 5.50 lakh to 6 lakh tonnes of fish is caught every year, providing livelihood to 5 lakh fishermen and 20 lakh people in related industries. Bangladesh exported 71,477 tonnes of fish and fish products (such as shrimp, hilsa, other marine fish) in the financial year 2023-2024 (FY24). Earned about 4,376 crore taka from this.

Fertility Conservation: The breeding season of Hilsa fish is during the south-west monsoon i.e. July to October and sometimes in January-March. A female lays thousands of eggs. The small fishes hatched from the eggs return to the sea. It rises in rivers like Ganga for 50-100 kilometers or sometimes up to 1200 kilometers. Indian fishermen catch fish in the brackish waters of the Ganga River and its delta, which meet the needs of Kolkata and West Bengal. But excessive fishing can reduce the fish stock at the time of Hilsa breeding. In such a situation, fishing is banned during breeding season.

Question 4- Does Bangladesh government supply Hilsa fish to India?
answer- Yes. Bangladesh created ‘Hilsa Diplomacy’, an informal diplomatic strategy between the two countries, to supply Hilsa fish to India. In this, Bangladesh exports its national fish Hilsa to India, so that bilateral relations are strengthened. It is mainly done during Bengali festivals like Durga Puja, when the demand for Hilsa is at its peak in West Bengal. Because of this, this export acts as a cultural, economic and diplomatic bridge.

This tradition was started by then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 1996, before the Ganga water-sharing treaty, when she sent Hilsa fish as a gift to former West Bengal CM Jyoti Basu. In 2012, Sheikh Hasina formalized ‘Hilsa Diplomacy’. According to ORF, Bangladesh exported 500 tonnes of Hilsa to India in 2019, 1,200 tonnes in 2020-2022 and 5,000 tonnes in 2023. The Yunus government imposed a ban after the coup in Bangladesh in 2024. But now approval has been given to export 1,200 tonnes of Hilsa fish in 2025.
