Tension has once again increased between America and Iran. US President Donald Trump has announced the end of the ceasefire with Iran. After this, a rise in the prices of crude oil is being seen all over the world. Meanwhile, another worrying news has emerged for India.

Four senior US senators have announced to push for a new law to take strict action against countries buying oil and gas from Russia. He says that to increase pressure on Russia, those countries should be targeted which are still buying oil and natural gas from Russia. He believes that this income received by Russia is helping in continuing the Ukraine war.

Democratic Party senators Richard Blumenthal and Jeanne Shaheen, along with Republican Party senators Lindsey Graham and Roger Wicker, said on Friday (July 10, 2027) that they have reached an agreement with the Trump administration. Issuing a joint statement, they said that they are happy to inform that an agreement has been reached with the Trump administration to advance legislation imposing new sanctions on Russia. He said that significant progress has been made in this direction and he wants to see this law implemented soon.

Also read: ‘If Iran gets me murdered…’, Trump said – America will destroy, one thousand missiles locked and loaded

American tariff may increase by 500 percent

Senators said that Russia is continuously attacking civilian areas. In such a situation, the US government and Parliament should together take such steps that will increase economic pressure on the countries purchasing oil and gas from Russia. He says that such countries are helping Russia. This proposed law targets countries that buy oil, natural gas, uranium and other petroleum products from Russia. These senators, who put forward the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025, believe that it is necessary to increase economic pressure on Russia. In the initial draft of this law, it was proposed to impose US tariffs of up to 500 percent on the goods and services of countries purchasing energy from Russia. Senator Richard Blumenthal had earlier called this proposed tariff a bone-breaking step.

America can give exemption to any country

In this law, the US President has also been given the right that if giving exemption to any country is in the interest of America’s national security, then it can be given relief from this action for 180 days. According to American media reports, some changes have been made in this bill later and the provisions related to tariffs have been made a little softer than before. However, complete details of the new and final draft have not been made public yet. In this entire matter, special attention is being given to India. The leaders supporting the law have taken the name of India many times. In June 2025, Senator Lindsey Graham wrote on the social media platform X that if China and India continue to support Russia, then they themselves will be responsible for it.

The proposed law has considerable support in the US Senate.

Meanwhile, a special license issued by America had expired on June 17. This proposed law has received considerable support in the US Senate. A total of 84 senators have become co-sponsors of this bill. President Donald Trump has also said that he sees this legislation as a means to put pressure on Russia so that negotiations can move forward to end the Ukraine war. Although Senator Graham has previously claimed that Trump supports this legislation, this proposal to impose sanctions on Russia has not yet become law, more than a year after it was first introduced.

Amidst the increasing tension in West Asia, the eyes of the world have once again turned to the Strait of Hormuz. The Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters, which is responsible for Iran’s war operations, has announced that the Strait of Hormuz is being “closed” to ships. However, America has rejected this claim and said that ship movement is continuing in the waterway and the situation is being constantly monitored.

Khatam Al-Anbiya Headquarters has cited the alleged violation of the terms of the ceasefire agreement with America as the reason behind its announcement. Along with this, continuous ceasefire violations by Israel in Southern Lebanon, displacement of civilians and military action have also been cited as the basis for this decision.

Amidst these claims and counter-claims, news of relief for India has emerged. Three large Indian flagged crude oil tankers have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and headed towards India. More than 8.6 lakh tonnes of crude oil is loaded in these ships, which is considered very important for the energy security of the country.

Gas Discovery in India: Recently there were reports that oil reserves have been found in the Sindh province of India’s neighboring country Pakistan. Apart from this, there are also reports regarding gas that gas reserves have also been found there. Due to which an atmosphere of happiness was created in Pakistan. Meanwhile, there are reports now that gas reserves have been found in India too. After facing shortage of gas for the past several days, now getting stock of gas is a matter of happiness and relief in itself.

Oil India report
In fact, the government company Oil India Limited has found another large reserve of natural gas in the Andaman Sea region of India. It has been told by the company that natural gas has been found in a well in Vijaypuram-3 near the coast of Andaman. This is the company’s second important hydrocarbon (oil-gas) discovery in this area. According to the company, the Vijayapuram-3 well is located about 15 kilometers away from the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands.

Also read: RBI News: India’s foreign exchange reserves strengthened again, treasury crossed 682 billion dollars

natural gas found in depth
Drilling at this place was done in 355 meter deep sea area. During initial investigation, signs of natural gas were found at a depth of more than 1900 meters and gas was seen coming out continuously, which confirmed its presence here.

Oil India’s statement
Talking about this, Oil India said that this discovery is also important because it indicates that large reserves of oil and gas may exist in the Andaman Sea area. However, it has not been decided yet whether production from here will be possible from a business point of view or not. More tests will be done for this in the coming time. The company is currently testing the gas samples to ascertain its quality and energy potential. Not only this, scientists are studying from which source the gas is made.

Also read: Oil-Gas Discovery: Treasure found in India’s neighboring country, oil and gas found in closed well

Let us tell you that earlier in September 2025, information about finding of natural gas in Vijaypuram-2 well had also come to light. So far, signs of gas have been found in two of the three wells dug in this block. This has further increased confidence in the possibilities of the area.

Due to this, America has imposed a ban on buying crude oil from Iran. In such a situation, this question was arising in the minds of people that from where will the Indian government buy oil? However, the government itself has responded to this concern.

Will India buy oil from Russia?
Recently the Indian Petroleum Ministry had held a press briefing. In which Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry, has told from where India will buy oil now. Talking about this, Sujata said, ‘Regarding the exemption given by America on Russia, I would like to make it clear that we have been purchasing from Russia even before the exemption, during the exemption and even now.’

Read this also: Now wasteful expenditure will not happen, the government tightened its grip on banks and companies, said – it is very important, only then…

Decision depends on commercial consideration
During this, Sujata Sharma also told that the decision to buy crude oil depends on commercial consideration and availability of supply. He said, ‘This is completely commercial sense, which we should have at the time of purchase.’ During this, Sujata Sharma has also mentioned that there are abundant oil reserves in the country. There is no shortage of it anywhere.

Let us tell you that recently the prices of petrol and diesel have been increased in the country. The prices of both have increased by Rs 3 per liter. Which has completely affected the pockets of the common man. Due to the ongoing tension in the Middle East, the prices of crude oil are increasing in the international market. This is affecting inflation in India also. The government has also said that the times to come may be difficult. In such a situation, reduce oil consumption as much as possible.

Middle East Tensions: Amidst the war related to Iran, the energy crisis is deepening across the world and alternative ways are being searched for. At present, there are no signs of the ongoing tension between America and Iran ending soon. Meanwhile, while addressing the Lok Sabha on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed about India’s situation and the steps taken by the government amid the ongoing tension in the Middle East.

Big impact on global economy

Describing the tension in West Asia as serious, Prime Minister Modi said that this conflict has had a deep impact on the global economy, affecting people’s livelihood and its impact will be felt for a long time. He said that the area where this conflict is going on is an important trade route for India. In such a situation, the safety of Indians living in conflict affected areas is of paramount importance and the Central Government is taking all necessary steps with full alertness.

Giving detailed information on the situation of crude oil, LPG and LNG in India, he said that the government is making continuous efforts to maintain the supply. He said that it has been more than three weeks since this war and the whole world is appealing for peace from all sides.

Strait of Hormuz closed but steps taken

The Prime Minister also said that since the start of the war, freight transportation through the Strait of Hormuz has been affected, which has increased the pressure on energy supplies. However, the government has taken such steps which can reduce the impact on the supply of petrol and gas to a great extent. Describing the mixing of ethanol in petrol as a big achievement, he said that it saves about 45 million barrels of oil every year.

He also said that India imports about 60 percent of its LPG requirement. In such a situation, in view of the current uncertainty, the government is giving priority to domestic gas and the production of LPG is also being increased rapidly, so that the supply remains smooth.

The impact of the increasing war in the Middle East is now directly visible on the global energy market. Especially the situation has become more serious due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This sea route is very important for the world, because about 20 percent of global crude oil and LNG trade takes place from here. Due to its stoppage, the supply of oil in the international market has been affected.

The current situation due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz can be gauged from the fact that in just six days the prices of crude oil have increased by about 12 percent. On 26 February 2026, the price of 1 barrel of oil was 71.06. On March 2, the price increased to $ 77.75 per barrel. On March 3, the price of crude oil reached $79.60 per barrel. The effect of this rise in oil prices is also visible on the Indian rupee, due to which the import cost is increasing.

direct impact on india

India imports about 50 percent of its oil requirement from the Strait of Hormuz. In such a situation, closure of this route can have a big impact on the energy security of the country. According to experts, every $1 increase in the price of crude oil can increase India’s annual import bill by $1.8 to $2 billion. If prices remain high for a long time, inflation may increase and prices of petrol and diesel may also go up.

increasing military conflict

According to the report, in the first four days of the war, more than 1,000 targets were attacked and 555 people died. This has increased uncertainty in the region and nervousness is clearly visible in the energy market.

India’s preparations and options

India currently has about 74 days of crude oil reserves. This statement was given by Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Although normally there should be 90 days of oil storage, India has 74 days of stock. In this situation, if the war continues for a long time, its impact on India will be less. Apart from this, when the situation worsens, India can also consider the possibility of increasing imports from alternative sources like Russia, so that the supply is maintained. If the situation does not become normal soon, its impact will not be limited to the Middle East only, but will affect the economy of the entire world.

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told the Rajya Sabha on Monday (9 February 2026) that India has so much petroleum reserves that the country can meet its oil needs for 74 days. He gave this information while answering the questions of the members during the question hour.

Puri said that India is a rapidly growing country and it is very important for such a country to have safe and strong oil reserves. He said that if there is any kind of turmoil in the world, like war, supply disruption or huge increase in prices, India will not be in a weak position.

Oil refinery system exists

Hardeep Singh Puri said that oil refinery systems are present on both the western and eastern coasts of India, due to which the country’s supply system remains strong. Citing International Energy Agency (IEA) data, Puri said that today India is the third largest consumer of crude oil in the world. Along with this, India also has the fourth largest oil refining capacity in the world. At present, India refines about 26 crore metric tons of crude oil annually, which will be increased to 32 crore metric tons per year in the future. Apart from this, India is also the world’s fifth largest exporter in terms of petroleum products.

Why was the petroleum reserve created?

Puri said that petroleum reserves have been created so that in case of any global crisis, the country’s oil needs can be met without any interruption. According to IEA, any country should have at least 90 days of oil reserves. He said that India estimates the total reserves by adding its strategic reserves as well as the oil present in the refineries. At present, overall India has oil reserves of 74 days. He admitted that ideally it should be 90 days, but at present he feels safe with the stock of 74 days. Consideration can also be given to increasing it further in future.

53.3 lakh metric tons of crude oil
Apart from this, the minister said in a written reply that the government has created oil reserves at three places in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka through Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited (ISPRL). Their total capacity is 53.3 lakh metric tons of crude oil. The quantity of oil in these reserves keeps increasing and decreasing according to the market conditions.

After this, tremendous tension has increased in the Middle East countries. It is believed that the way the tension between the two countries is increasing, it will not only affect West Asia but India will also not be untouched by it. The reason for this is the Gulf of Hormuz. It is between Iran and Oman. It connects the Gulf of Persia to the Arabian Sea and Oman’s Gulf. In addition, it is a sensitive and an important path.

Hormus Gulf of Gully Oil Supply

The bay of this hormus can also be gauged from the fact that about 20 percent of the global oil supply passes through this path. Along with this, this is the only sea route for the Middle East oil producing countries, such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE, so that they transport oil to the world market.

In such a situation, if the problem arises here, then the price of oil will go to the seventh sky. The supply chain will stop and the energy needs of the countries including India depend on it will have a direct impact.

What is the effect on India

The most important thing is that it can become a big danger for India, because India does about two -thirds of oil rectangles through this path. Apart from this, about half of LNG is also imported through this route.

In such a situation, if this path is closed, then India will have to find other routes immediately, which will create more costs and logistics challenges. India now has the option to consider other sources of energy and increase its reserve in view of the possibilities of increasing costs, so that such challenges can be faced in the coming time.

Oil price is predicted to increase

Brokerage firm JP Morger warned that if the struggle increases, then in that case the price of oil can increase to $ 120. This can also increase inflation and the current fiscal deficit of India. Also, everything will become expensive by increasing the price of oil.

India now seems to be more serious about its energy security. Till now, India was dependent on foreign tankers for supply of crude oil, but now preparations have been made to change this story. The government’s intention is that India should have its own oil tanker fleet, which also controls India and construction.

Why was there dependency on foreign tankers?

Till now, India’s government oil companies have been using tankers hired from most foreign companies. Many of these ships are also old and expensive. This not only makes logistics expensive, but also strategic control does not remain with India.

A big plan to buy 112 new tankers

Now the government is going to take a big step. India will buy a total of 112 new crude oil tankers. The scheme is about Rs 85,000 crore (about 10 billion dollars) and will be implemented by 2040. The project will start from the purchase of 79 ships, out of which 30 medium range will be carriers.

The first order may come this month

According to government sources, the first order can be released by the end of this month, which will include the purchase of 10 tankers. This will be the first episode of this long term scheme.

Big opportunity for ‘Make in India’

The special thing about this scheme is that these tankers will be constructed only in India. Even if it is partnership with a foreign company, the condition is that construction should be done in India itself. This will give a tremendous boost to the shipbuilding industry of the country and will also create local employment opportunities.

Why is India buying a tanker?

The world may be moving towards clean energy now, but India’s energy needs are growing fast. The demand for petroleum products in the country is continuously increasing, whether it is for domestic use or for export. This is the reason that India is working on a plan to increase its refining capacity from 250 million tonnes to 450 million tonnes by 2030.

The number of indigenous tankers will increase

Currently, only 5 percent of the oil tankers that India have, only 5 percent of the tankers remain in India. The government aims to reach 7 per cent by 2030 and to 69 per cent by 2047, which is associated with the vision of India becoming a developed nation.

Now new India will be built

This move of the government will not only give India logistic and strategic strength, but it will be a solid and big step towards the ‘self -sufficient India’ campaign. Now the oil will come from there, but the tanker and control will be completely native.
