A historic moment has come in Japan. Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Sanae Takaichi is going to become the country’s first woman Prime Minister by winning the vote in the lower parliament. His oath ceremony is scheduled to take place today itself. 64 year old Sana Takaichi is known as the ‘Iron Lady’ of Japan. She is a big fan of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. This was his third attempt to reach the top power of Japan. With this, she will become the fourth consecutive Prime Minister who has been in power in the last five years while battling the party’s scandals.

Sanae Takaichi is the leader of the strict conservative faction of the LDP and is considered a disciple of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. His political image has been firm and taking tough decisions. After becoming the Prime Minister, he will face many big challenges. First of all, to deal with Japan’s economic recession. Apart from this, balancing the US-Japan relations and unifying the party after the disagreements and scandals within the party will also be a big challenge.

Sane is adding a new chapter of women leadership

Experts believe that in Japan the Prime Minister keeps changing frequently, but Sanae Takaichi’s victory is adding a new chapter of women leadership in this change. Under his leadership, Japan hopes that there will be a new direction in the country’s policy and economy.

This new alliance still does not have a majority in both the houses of Parliament. This means that to pass any law, Takaichi will have to include other opposition parties with him. This is the reason why his tenure cannot last long. According to the information, Takaichi has also been a heavy-metal drummer and biker. He entered politics for the first time in 1993 by winning elections from his hometown Nara. After this, she has worked on many important positions like economic security, internal affairs and gender equality.

Sanae Takaichi considers Margaret Thatcher as her political idol and also completely agrees with Shinzo Abe’s conservative viewpoint. She is considered quite staunch on foreign affairs and has been active in reviewing Japan’s wartime history. Additionally, she has been a regular visitor to the Yasukuni shrine.

PM Modi congratulated

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on her election victory. Prime Minister Modi tweeted that he looks forward to working with Takaichi to further strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. PM Modi said in his tweet, “Our deep relations are extremely important for peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Japan on Friday (29 August 2025) on a four-day visit to two countries (Japan-China). As soon as he reached Japan, he wrote on X (East Twitter) that I have reached Tokyo. India and Japan are constantly strengthening their developmental cooperation. I am keen to meet Prime Minister Ishiba and others during this visit, which will give an opportunity to further strengthen the existing partnerships and find new avenues of cooperation. With reaching Japan, PM Modi met people of Indian origin. Indians welcomed him warmly and Modi also accepted a greeting. Connection with Indian migrants during foreign trips has been an important part of Modi’s diplomacy, which strengthens the People-to-Pipul connect.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to be the main focus on the steps to promote trade and investment relations with Japan and to normalize relations with China. Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan and China is taking place at a time when the trade and fee policies of US President Donald Trump have caused tension in Indo-US relations. The Prime Minister expressed confidence before leaving for Japan and China that this journey would take forward national interests and priorities.

Annual summit with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba
According to the PTI report, Modi had said before leaving that I am confident that my trips to Japan and China will carry forward our national interests and priorities and contribute to building meaningful cooperation in regional and global peace, security and continuous development. Modi will hold an annual summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during a 2 -day visit to Japan. The first day of his visit is expected to promise to double its investment targets in India on behalf of Japan and many agreements are likely to be signed by both sides to increase cooperation in different fields including defense and technology.
