Hanimaadhoo Airport: A big regional cooperation is being seen between India and Maldives. In fact, Hanimadhoo International Airport was inaugurated in Maldives this week. This project has been completed with the financial and technical assistance of India. This airport was inaugurated by Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu and India’s Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu did it jointly. In the meantime, let us know whether India will also get the fare for this international airport built with the help of India. Before this we will know what role India played in the construction of this airport.

India’s role in the construction of Hanimadhu International Airport

This new airport built in the northern part of Maldives was built in 2019 with a loan assistance of $ 800 million given by India’s EXIM Bank. The construction contract worth $136.6 million was given to India’s JMC Projects Limited. This company successfully completed this project.

Let us tell you that this airport has been designed to operate large commercial aircraft like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. Its annual passenger capacity is 13 lakh passengers. Its runway is quite modern and the airport is also equipped with advanced terminal facilities. This project has been prepared under India’s ‘Neighborhood First’ and ‘Sagar’ or ‘Ocean Vision’ policies. The objective of these policies is to increase connectivity, maritime cooperation and regional development in the Indian Ocean region.

Will India get the rent for this airport?

India will not get any rent or revenue from this airport. This money was given as a loan, not as an ownership based investment. This means that India will not get ownership or rent of the airport. The Maldives government will repay the loan as per the terms agreed with EXIM Bank and the entire revenue of this airport will go directly to Maldives. India’s role in this entire project has been that of a development partner and not a profit seeking applicant.

Promotion of tourism and trade in Northern Maldives

After this airport, a big change will be seen in the economy of Northern Maldives. With the capacity to handle large commercial aircraft, this new facility will significantly increase foreign tourist arrivals, especially from India, Europe and the Middle East. Apart from this, the airport will also provide export opportunities for local industries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned from a two -day visit to Maldives. This journey was special because he was invited as the chief guest at the Independence Day celebrations of Maldives. This was the first high -level visit of a foreign leader after President Mohammad Mujju came to power. During this tour, India announced a large credit line of $ 565 million (about Rs 4,800 crore) for Maldives, which will be used in projects related to hospitals, schools, housing and infrastructure.

Along with this, it was also agreed to start talks between India and Maldives regarding the free trade agreement (FTA). Maldives President Mujju termed PM Modi’s visit as historic and termed India as the most trusted partner and ‘first responder’.

Mujju came to power by giving the slogan of ‘India Out’

Mujju came to power only by giving India Out slogan, after which India also had to recall its army and now they themselves want India to have a free trade deal and the people of India should go there as tourists as before so that the economy of Maldives remains on the track.

China shocks, resentment in media

China’s concern has increased due to the growing proximity between India-Maldives. China’s official mouthpiece Global Times has reacted sharply to the Indian media coverage regarding this tour. The report said that India is showing it to weaken China’s influence in Maldives.

Kian Feng, an expert at Beijing-based Tsinghua University, described the attitudes of the Indian media as ‘old thinking’ and said that it shows the mentality like ‘Zero-S-Game’.

China is still making this claim

China also reminded that President Mujju went on a visit to Beijing in January and then described China as the closest friend of Maldives. Mujju then said that Maldives supports China’s efforts for global peace and justice. However, the current developments show that Mujju’s foreign policy is now moving towards balance and relations with India are being given priority again.

A new twist in relations between India and Maldives came out when Maldives President Mohammad Mujju described India as its closest partner country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. Mujju, who once to power with slogans like ‘India Out’, is now appreciating the cooperation from India. During the historic visit of PM Modi, India announced to provide a new credit line (financial assistance) of Rs 5,000 crore to Maldives, which President Muizu has said to be very important for the development of Maldives.

What did President Mujju say on the relationship with India?

In a conversation with News18, President Mujju said that Maldives is now moving towards completing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India. He said that when this agreement is reached, the traders of both countries will benefit greatly. Maldives will use the assistance of 5,000 crore received from India in the development of hospitals, houses, schools and other basic facilities.

Mujju said, “We have fixed many important projects for this. This help is very important for us.” Thanking PM Modi, he said, “We are very grateful for this visit of the Prime Minister.”

Mujju came to power in 2023

Significantly, when Mujju came to power in 2023, his stand was very strict towards India and the ‘India Out’ campaign was run. In 2024, some of his ministers also made sharp comments on India. Mujju had previously traveled to Türkiye and China, while according to tradition the President of Maldives used to visit India first, but External Affairs Minister S.K. Jaishankar’s visit and Mujju’s visit to India proved to be helpful in bringing back the relationship between the two countries.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi reached Maldives on his two -day visit on Friday (July 25, 2025). On the invitation of Maldives President Mohammad Mujju, PM Modi will participate in the 60th Independence Day celebrations of Maldives as the chief guest. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with 21 cannon salutes at the ceremony held in the capital Male.

To welcome PM Modi, Maldives capital Male has been put in colorful banners, big posters of PM Modi. At the same time, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed by decorating the Indian tricolor on many major intersections of the capital including Republic Square and the main roads going to Male International Airport. Not only this, a very big picture has also been put on the building of the Ministry of Defense of Maldives to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

PM Modi arrives on Maldives’s third official visit

This visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is his third official visit to Maldives. Apart from this, PM Modi is the first foreign nation head to reach the official visit to Maldives after Mohammad Muizu took power as President.

China will go to Tilamila after seeing the reception of PM Modi

However, despite being very tension in the relations between India and Maldives for some time, PM Modi will get to see such reception and hospitality in the Maldives. Actually, China is engaged in maintaining its impact by reducing India’s influence on Maldives. Two years ago, in 2023, Mozu Mujju came to power with a majority in power with the promise of Maldives ‘policy of Bharat I’ and ending India’s influence on Maldives.

After Maldives came to power, Mohammad Mujju traveled to his official visit to Beijing, the capital of China instead of New Delhi. During the visit, China entered into an agreement with Maldives for non-fatal weapons without any cost and also agreed to train the soldiers of Maldives.

But today after two years, India and Maldives are seen returning to track again. With this, China is seen to be shattering its desire to establish its influence in the Indian Ocean through the Maldives.

ALSO READ: Kangali’s danger of Kangali, ‘India Out’ fever, why are Mujju strengthening relations with India?

When there was a change of power in the year 2023 in Maldives, one of the good friends of India, the new power turned against India. Chinese supporter Mohammad Mujju became the new President there and with this, his statement against India started. He started talking about India Out, China, he started distance from India, distance from the people of India and as a result, India also made distance from Mujju.

It has not been spent even two years that Muizu has understood that if he has to run the government in Maldives, it is not possible without India. That is why Mujju, who cursed PM Modi by drinking water, began to feel so much need of India that when PM Modi reached the Maldives tour, President Mujju himself reached the airport to pick him up. So why did Mujju change such a heart in two years.

After all, what compulsion was in front of Mujju that he was forced to befriend India and is it that China forced to friendship, which has cheated Maldives in the name of friendship. After all, what is the whole story of Maldives President Mujju being bowed down, we will tell in detail.

In the Maldives, when Mohammad Mujju was to contest the election, he set the anti -India tone during the election and clearly said that the soldiers of India who are present in the Maldives will be thrown out as soon as they become President. With this opposing tone, Mujju was elected the new President of Maldives and as soon as he took power, he put the Maldives government against India. Some leaders of Maldives also posted it on social media and this made the anti -India stance of the new government of Maldives.

Then nothing was said by India. Yes, one day Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to Lakshadweep on his official visit and photographed it sitting in a chair and posted it on his social media handle. Then the Maldives who used to be buzzing with Indian tourists, in the Maldives’ economy, the tourists from India started to cancel their booking and started a debate on social media that better than the Maldives is the Lakshadweep of India. That is, the fight against India was not a diplomatic, but the common people of India.

Even then Mujju Pushpa was remained. They were saying that they would not bow down and the reason for this was that China then assured Mujju that we are against you against India, we are with you. Mujju also went on a visit to China to take it along. When he returned from there, he said that it is a matter of sovereignty of Maldives and the soldiers of India who are posted in Maldives will have to go back. India out raising the slogan loudly. At that time, Muizu did not know how hollow his country was getting inside, but soon he came to know about this.

He came to know that the help that China has talked about is not doing. The help that was expected from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries did not get it to Mujju. As a result, Maldives, already under debt, had neither money to repay the loan nor the interest of that loan. No one was ready to give a new loan.

In such a situation, Muizu had no other option but to take up India. He sent his Foreign Minister Moses Jamir to India. On 8, 9 and 10 May Moses Jamir India Foreign Minister [डॉ.
