India US Trade Talks: The tension between India and America due to tariffs (fees) is continuously increasing. The US government has recently imposed a high tariff of up to 50 percent on Indian goods exports, including 25 percent base tariff and additional 25 percent punitive fee. This additional fee has been levied by the US in the form of penalty imposed by India on purchasing crude oil from Russia.

However, after some positive indications received by US President Donald Trump recently, the talks between the two countries have started again. Earlier many rounds of talks were inconclusive, but now the situation seems to be changing.

NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam on Monday expressed confidence that India and the United States will soon have a mutually beneficial trade agreement. He said that both countries are committed to a bilateral agreement that is in the interest of the economies of both.

India needs to open its market: Subrahmanyam

Subrahmanyam said that India should reduce its fees and non-tariff barriers and make markets more open to increase competition in manufacturing sector. He made this statement during the release of ‘Trade Watch Quarterly’ report. He said, “The good thing is that both sides are still committed to the conversation. The talks were held last month, so we hope that we will get positive results soon.”

Significantly, in August, the US doubled the tariff over Indian goods to 50 percent. It also includes tariffs in the form of 25 percent panalty imposed to buy oil from Russia. After this move, tension between Delhi and Washington increased.

India described this American step as “inappropriate and indiscriminate”. Subrahmanyam said that these fees will not have a major impact till Christmas, but if there is no agreement by November, then there may be a serious impact in the export sector.

Economic shock will be deferred with agreement

He said, “We are currently in harm… 50 percent of our goods become expensive, which is difficult to stay in competition. But if the trade agreement is reached by November, then big disruption can be avoided.” Subrahmanyam also added that India’s trade deficit is still manageable, but there is an imbalance in it.

Overall, this tariff confrontation between India and the US is a challenge for both economies – but if the conversation moves in the right direction, the new trade agreement between the two countries can prove to be a positive sign in the global market.

Also read: Extra charge on Cash on delivery! To cheat customers will now be expensive for e-commerce companies

External Affairs Minister S.K. Jaishankar has made a big statement on Sunday (October 5, 2025). Jaishankar said that the Laxman lines of New Delhi should be respected in any trade agreement between the two countries. He also said that efforts are being made to find a shared basis in this regard.

Jaishankar admitted in a dialogue session of a program in New Delhi that there are some issues between India and the US and many of them are associated with not finalizing the proposed trade agreement.

We have not been able to reach any agreement for our business talks- Jaishankar

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that it is necessary to make an understanding about trade between India and America, because America is the largest market in the world. However, he also clarified that the Laxman lines of India should also be respected. He said, ‘Today we have some issues with America. One of the major reasons for this is that we have not been able to reach any agreement for our business talks till now and due to not reaching there, some charges have been imposed on India.

Inappropriate levy on buying fuel from Russia- Jaishankar

Jaishankar Kautilya was speaking in a discussion on the form of foreign policy in the Economic Enclave. During this, he said, ‘Apart from this, there is a double fee, about which we have publicly said that we consider it very inappropriate. This fee targets us for buying fuel from Russia, while many other countries are also doing this. They also include those countries which have a more conflict relationship with Russia than at the present.

Us It is necessary to make business understanding with- Jaishankar

The relations between New Delhi and Washington have been under severe stress since the US President Trump doubled the fee on Indian goods to 50 percent. It also includes 25 percent additional fee on the purchase of Russian crude oil from India. India termed this action of America as unfair, unwanted and irrational.

Jaishankar said, “Whatever it is in the end, it is necessary to create a business understanding with America, because it is the largest market in the world and also because most of the countries of the world have made such an understanding with America.” He said, ‘But it should be an understanding in which our basic boundaries, our Lakshman lines can be respected. In any agreement, there are some things on which you can interact and there are some on which you cannot talk.

India’s approach is absolutely clear- Jaishankar

Jaishankar said that India’s approach is absolutely clear. He said, ‘I think we are absolutely clear about this. We have to find that land and talks have been going on since March.

India and the United States have resumed talks on the recently proposed trade agreement after a few weeks of gap. The Foreign Minister also said that the stress in relations is not affecting every aspect of the conversation. He said, ‘There are problems, issues, no one can deny it. Those issues require negotiations, discussions and solutions and this is what we are trying to do.

He further said, ‘I will really refrain from finding anything implications about it more than issues. I think I also want to say that a large part of the relationship is either running as before or in some cases is going on more than before.

It also read: ‘Russia is damaging Ukraine’s infrastructure’, Jailonski accused Putin

Donald Trump has always been known for his aggressive strategies in American politics. This time he tried to play a big game by calling Russia’s President Vladimir Putin Alaska. His plan was to bring India under pressure from all around, whether it is a Pakistan card, pressure of trade agreement or raising the issue in international courts, but this attempt collapsed at the same time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy overturned the situation completely.

There was a long -standing talk between India and the US on a bilateral trade agreement. Five round of talks were also completed. But the sixth round meeting, which was to be held in Delhi in late August, was suddenly postponed. The aim of America was to reduce its energy and defense purchases from Russia and accept American terms. But when the Modi government refused to bow down, the US tried to pressurize.

Asim Munir threatens India from America land

Trump called Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir to his house. From there, poison has been raised against India, from the threat of nuclear attack to the Breaking of the Indus Water Treaty. Standing on America’s soil, Pakistan’s military leadership gave open threats to India. In American political circles, questions were raised on how Trump allowed this rhetoric to happen, but Trump’s silence was indicating that he is a part of the game and wanted to bow to India. Although India gave a sharp reply to it and Pakistan’s strategy was left to Dhari.

Decision in favor of PAK on Indus Water Treaty dispute

The permanent arbitration court ruled in favor of Pakistan regarding the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan called it its victory. But India made it clear that it never recognized this court and it only considers the neutral expert mechanism. That is, despite trying to put international pressure, India remained on its stand.

Meeting Putin and Trump’s failure

Trump hoped that Putin would make a statement on India and there would be an atmosphere of cracking in Russia-India relations. But the opposite happened. Putin did not give any statement on India. Modi and Putin’s friendship and strategic partnership remained as strong as before. Trump’s entire strategy was destroyed as his aim was to separate India from Russia. That is, the game of Trump turned upside down on him.

Modi’s strategy balance and strength

The Modi government gave a clear message in this whole incident that India will not bow under any pressure. Energy and defense cooperation will continue with Russia. The threats of Pakistan will be answered in the same language. The deal with America will be on India’s terms. This strategy showed that India is now not just a big market but a global power balance player.

Also read: India threatened tariffs and America increased 20 percent business… Why is Trump so confused about Putin?

Us tariff impact on india: Amid the ongoing conversation on the trade deal, US President Donald Trump has created a stir in the market on Wednesday by announcing a new rate of 25 percent tariffs on India. These new rates will be applicable from next month, ie August 1. Along with this, Trump, who is trying to stop the Ukraine war, has also said to impose a fine on India due to buying oil from Russia. This news is considered disappointing for Indian exporters exporting to America.

Apart from this, Trump has announced 15 percent tariffs on European Union and Japan, 20 percent on Vietnam, 19 percent on Indonesia and 10 percent on Britain.

What is fear?

In fact, more concern than the tariff imposed by Trump is about potential penalty to Indian businessmen, which has not yet been formally implemented. Its most impact can be on areas like India’s textile industry, carpet, gems and jewelery, and seafood.

According to TOI, M. Rafiq Ahmed, head of Farida Group, a large exporter of shoes, was preparing to travel in the US in the hope of taking new orders, but he hearing the news of the fine, he has started rethinking his plans. He said, “There is an atmosphere of quite uncertainty and this announcement is shocking.”

Why is the atmosphere of doubt?

Vietnam is a major competitor of India’s exporters. In such a situation, 5 percent more tariff on Indian products than Vietnam is a matter of concern for Indian exporters. FIEO Director General Ajay Sahai says that the importers and exporters are not able to fix their costs due to the lack of a clear announcement of the fine by Trump. In this situation, businessmen are unable to understand what they should take the next step.

What is a ray of hope?

However, some expectations are still left due to the ongoing trade deal with the US. Exporters of things like jewelery, textiles, shrimp fish, auto parts, and medicines from India are still in the hope that there can be a positive agreement between the two countries.

India-Rus Trade Deal: The trade deal between India and the US is expected to be finalized at the earliest. After the fifth round of talks in Washington till four days (14 July-17 July), a team of American trade officials will now visit India in the month of August for the next round of talks.

Discussion on these issues in the fifth round

Last week, there was a conversation between the two countries in Washington between the two countries between the India’s Chief Dialogue and Special Secretary in the Commerce Department, Rajesh Aggarwal and Brandon Brendon Lynch, Assistant American Trade Representative for South and Central Asia.

According to the report of news agency PTI, issues related to agriculture and automobiles were discussed in the fifth round of talks. Apart from this, there were also talks on SOMET (Special Chemicals, Organism, Materials, Equipments and Technology). The two countries are preparing to make the trade deal the last blueprint before August 1 and the same deadline is the implementation of Trump’s new tariff.

Preparation for the deal final before 1 August

US President Donald Trump announced the recipe rice on his trading partners in April this year. This trade deal is very important for India because from August 1, America has planned to put a tariff of 26 percent on all other countries including India. It also includes a baseline tariff of 10 percent.

India’s effort is to remove this 26 percent tariff. India wants the US to give it a discount on steel and aluminum (50 percent) and auto sector (25 percent). Here America is demanding to increase its reach in India’s agriculture and dairy sector. In view of this, some farmer organizations have urged the government not to include any issue related to agriculture in the trade agreement.

Trump Tariff: US President Donald Trump has so far sent tariff letters to about 20 countries, including countries like Japan, Korea, Bangladesh and South Africa. Now it is the turn of India. It is being told that the talk on the trade deal between India and the US is close to the final, under which a tariff of 20 percent can be imposed on India.

India had a tariff of 26 percent

According to a report by Bloomberg, India may probably avoid this new wave of letters being sent to countries like Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar on tariff hike. The government of Trump of America has already announced to impose 50 percent tariffs on countries like Brazil and Myanmar and 20 percent on Vietnam and Philippines.

According to a TOI report, India is expected to impose less than 26 % tariffs. Let us know that in April, the US had announced to impose 26 percent recipes on India on India, which is half of the 52 percent tariff to be imposed on the US of India. Trump called it a ‘discount tariff’ for India.

Will India be able to avoid tariffs?

If the same deal between India and the US is finalized, then India will also join the list of countries with the United Kingdom, who has managed to escape the tariff war of Trump due to the trade agreement. Trump told NBC News earlier this week, “We are thinking about putting a tariff of 15 to 20 percent on most countries that have not yet reached any agreement.” However, he also said, “We are closer to the agreement with India.”

India-as Mini Trade Deal: The negotiations on the limited trade agreement between India and the United States are in the final stages. American tariff deadline is happening on Wednesday (July 9, 2025). For other countries, this deadline has been extended till August 1, but India has not been included in it, which is estimated that the official announcement of the deal between the two countries can be made anytime tonight.

The conversation was going on for a long time
According to a senior official, talks were going on between India and the US for several weeks. However, this deal will be limited as many areas could not be agreed. India was firm on its demands and was willing to face the tariff, but the US took the initiative to negotiate.

Suspense over tariff
It is not yet clear how much tariff America will impose on India, but according to reports it can be between 10 and 20 percent. Donald Trump warned of 10% additional tariff on BRICS countries. 26% of the recipe rockel tariff has already been implemented on India.

India does not have a trade deficit from America
In the financial year 2022-23, India exported ₹ 6.84 lakh crore to the US while in 2023-24 it was ₹ 6.75 lakh crore. At the same time, India’s imports from America decreased from ₹ 4.43 lakh crore to ₹ 3.67 lakh crore in 2023-24. India exports double to America, which will benefit it despite the tariff.

China-Bangladesh loss, India will get benefit
After the Geneva Agreement, the tariff war between the US and China has intensified. The US has imposed 51% tariff on China and 35% on Bangladesh. This will affect the export capacity of these countries and India will get competitive benefits in the US market, especially in textile.

Who will benefit from this deal?
To India:

Textile, medicines, and jewelery access to the US market

Export will be cheaper by removing 26% reciperook tariff

Bilateral trade can reach $ 500 billion by 2030

To America:

Products like Pekan Nuts, Blueberry and Automobiles are a chance to sell on low tariffs in India

An opportunity to strengthen market in Asia

The possibilities of broad deal in future will be stronger

US Trade Policy: US President Donald Trump made an important announcement on the social media platform on Sunday (July 07, 2025). He informed that agreements and letters related to tariffs (fees) with various countries of America will be implemented today from July 7.

Trump wrote in the post, “I am very happy to declare that tariff letters and agreements in the United States, along with various countries of the world, will be sent and implemented on Monday, July 7, at 12 noon (Eastern Time).”

Us President Donald Trump Posts on his Truth Social, “I am please to announs that the united states tarif letters, and/or deals, with various counTries from Around the World, 12:00 PM (Eastern), Monday, July 7th. ” pic.twitter.com/xambnvwww8al

What does this decision of Trump mean?

It is clear from this decision of the US President that the Trump administration is going to strengthen its hold on international trade. Although it has not been clarified with which countries will be compromised or which products will apply to the tariffs, it is believed to have an impact on China, European Union and other major trading partners.

Donald Trump made this announcement in April

President Donald Trump announced in April a few months ago that many countries will now be imposed additional tax with 10% base tariff, which can be up to 50% in some cases. However, before implementing these more tariffs, the Trump administration gave 90 days time so that the scope of talks would remain. This deferment is now ending on 9 July.

Suspense still on Indo-US trade deal

No trade agreement has been reached between America and India so far. Despite the constant pressure by the Trump administration, the talks between the two countries have not reached any conclusion.

At the same time, diplomats of the European Union (EU) say that they too have not been able to reach any final agreement with America. Meanwhile, the Trump government has announced to impose 26 percent mutual tariff on India. Trump has made it clear that the countries who have already signed the trade letters sent to America will have to pay the tariff.

What is the Indo-US trade agreement stuck on?

India wants more access to the US market for its textile, leather and shoe industries in this deal. On the other hand, the US wants India to open its agriculture and dairy sector for American companies.

India usa trade deal: The long -running bilateral trade talks between India and the US have now reached a decisive turn. While the US wants India to give concession in import duty on dairy and agricultural products. At the same time, India has refused to do so. All this is happening at a time when both countries are trying to finalize an interim trade agreement. This agreement can later be the basis of a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement (BTA). The dialogue has been going on in Washington since the end of June and is now the sixth day, but no concrete consent has been announced yet.

India told the dairy sector ‘red line’
According to the top sources of the Government of India, India has dismissed the demand for giving discount in tariffs on dairy products by the US. More than 8 crore people get employment in India from this region, most of which are small farmers. A senior official said bluntly, “There is no question of giving any concession on dairy. This is our red line.” The government believes that exemption in sensitive areas like agriculture and dairy can be disastrous for India’s rural economy.

Rajesh Aggarwal’s journey increased, Jaishankar also gathered in efforts
Rajesh Aggarwal, Special Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, who is leading the Indian delegation, has extended his journey in Washington one more day with the aim of removing the deadlock. The talks started from 26 June and now have entered the sixth day on Tuesday. The talks are likely to continue on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S.K. Jaishankar is also in the US and is about to meet his American counterpart Marco Rubio during a diplomatic meeting. This meeting is also considered important towards breaking the deadlock in business talks.

India’s priorities- tariff concession in labor-dominated areas
There is a demand from India that the US should give exemption in import duty on labor-dominated areas such as textiles, costumes, gems and leather, plastic, chemicals, shrimp, oilseeds, grapes and bananas. According to government sources, “The concession on these products is not a threat to the domestic interests of America, so the possibility of opposition is also very low.” India believes that exemption in these areas will provide relief to its exporters and domestic employment will also be encouraged. The purpose of this interim agreement is to eliminate heavy duty (up to 26%) on Indian exports. The US wants to fulfill this agreement before the deadline of July 9.

Tariff Deadline and American Pressure
If the dialogue fails, the US can again apply tariffs up to 26%. According to PTI, an official said, “If the business talks fail, the 26 percent fee will be again impact.” The mutual fees imposed on Indian products on April 2 were suspended for 90 days. But the original tariff of 10% is still applicable. India wants permanent exemption from these additional charges so that exports do not be interrupted.

America’s demands and India’s challenge
America is demanding concession on dairy and agricultural products from India. These include industrial items, electric vehicles, wine, petrochemical products, apples, dry fruits (tree nuts), and gene-reflected crops. But it is difficult for India to accept all this, because most farmers of the country are dependent on traditional and marginal farming and any kind of external competition will directly affect them.

A target of $ 500 billion by 2030
India and the US want to finalize the first phase of their proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by September-October this year. Its goal is to reach bilateral trade by 2030 to $ 500 billion. Currently, this trade is around $ 191 billion.

However, if there is no compromise on disputed topics like agriculture and dairy, then this goal can be difficult. India says that it will not accept any foreign pressure at the cost of its farmers and rural economy.

India proposes retaliatory duties: In response to Trump’s tariff, the Government of India has also decided to impose retaliation. The proposal has been given to the World Trade Organization in this regard. This will be followed by apple, almonds, bouric acid, pear, steel and aluminum. According to the news agency Reuters, the tariff will be imposed on Washington in response to the huge tariff being imposed on India’s steel and aluminum. On Monday, by giving notice to the WTO, India said that they are eliminating the concessions being given on the special goods of America and the import duty will be increased on it.

India’s retaliation

The step from India has been taken at a time when New Delhi says that due to the conservationist steps of the US government, it was $ 7.6 billion being exported from India to the US market.

It is worth noting that in the first term, President Trump had increased the customs duty on steel and aluminum by adopting a similar conservation policy in the year 2018. Significantly, the US had put 25 percent and 10 percent tariffs of 2018 over Indian steel and aluminum, which was further extended in January 2020. This year again, the US re -revised the tariff over steel and alynium, which came into force from 12 March 2025. It has now been increased from America to 25 percent.

India is currently the second largest steel producing country in the world and has been struggling with the challenges of this tariff for a long time. In such a situation, the World Trade Organization has indicated to increase business differences between the two countries and increase the tariff again by President Trump.

Differences emerged on aluminum tariffs

These differences between the two countries have emerged when New Delhi and Washington were implementing the new trade agreement. India had demanded a cut on the tariffs being imposed on steel and aluminum on behalf of the US, so that the tariff gap could be compensated.
