Russia has proposed to India its two indigenous passenger aircraft, Superjet-100 (SJ-100) and Il-114-300. Both these aircraft have been developed completely with Russian technology and are not dependent on parts from western countries. Russia says that this offer can prove to be a good option for India’s rapidly growing aviation industry.

To attract India, Russia has prepared a special design on the Il-114-300 aircraft with the colors of the Indian national flag. This is believed to be an indication that Russia is considering this deal not just as a commercial but also as a strategic partnership. If this proposal goes ahead, then a new chapter can be added in passenger flights after India-Russia defense and technical cooperation.

Video of interior of Superjet-100 released

According to Sputnik report, Russia’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has released a video of the interior of the Superjet-100, in which the PD-8 jet engine has been used. This aircraft will be kept on static display in the Wings India 2026 exhibition. At the same time, United Aircraft Corporation will present its new regional aircraft Il-114-300 for the first time in this event, where it will also be a part of the flight demonstration. The Il-114-300 is powered by a TV7-117ST-01 turboprop engine, while the new PD-8 jet engine is used in the Superjet-100. Both the engines have been developed in Russia. Rostec says that the design and technology of these aircraft are especially useful for countries that want to reduce dependence on Western sanctions or supply chains.

Make in India Program

Russia believes that India’s UDAN program and Make in India initiative create a big opportunity for these aircraft. The UDAN scheme aims to connect small towns and remote areas with air network, where the demand for regional aircraft is increasing rapidly. Turboprop aircraft like Il-114-300 are considered suitable for these routes.

Dependence on Boeing and Airbus manufacturers

At present, most of India’s airlines are dependent on western manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus. Russia argues that its aircraft will give India technological diversity and could reduce costs and supply shortages in the long run. However, the acceptance of these aircraft in the Indian market will depend on the safety standards, maintenance arrangements and economic conditions.
