India and Russia: India has appealed to Russia to remove trade barriers on Indian goods such as electronics items, engineering goods, food items and fish products. India is very strong in these sectors and their demand in Russia is also very high. In such a situation, the only way is to increase exports.

Trade between India and Russia is done on a large scale, but it is not balanced. Indian oil companies purchased large quantities of crude oil from Russia and paid its prices in rubles. In such a situation, rubles worth 50-55 billion dollars have been deposited in the bank accounts of Russia. They are not being used fully. India wants Russia to increase imports from India and pay the price for goods in rubles. With this, business between the two will be balanced.

Where is the problem coming from?

According to a Times of India report, Indian exporters face many challenges to increase their access to the Russian market. Exporters are facing difficulties in the electronics sector due to Russia’s own strict regulations, which include mandatory localization of software and compliance with Russian cyber security regulations.

Shipments of engineering goods are also being delayed due to Russia’s own strict product standards and certification processes. Additionally, compliance with Russian-language documentation for food goods, fisheries and some machinery categories has further slowed exports.

increasing trade deficit between the two

This is why India has raised this issue with Russia to ensure balanced trade with Russia and ease of access of Indian goods to Russian markets. India has a huge trade deficit with Russia. This means that exports have not been as high as the imports have been.

In the first seven months of the current financial year, India’s trade deficit has reached approximately $25 billion, which is mostly due to the import of crude oil. Meanwhile, due to US sanctions, some Indian refiners have reduced the purchase of crude oil from Russia. Meanwhile, some suppliers came forward to meet India’s needs, due to which this trade deficit has reduced to some extent.

India-Russia bilateral trade: The relationship between India and Russia is old, the impact of which is also visible on the business of both the countries, which is now being considered to be further expanded. A senior officer has told news agency PTI that India has identified about 300 such products in engineering, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and chemicals, which will provide an important opportunity to Indian exporters to increase their presence in the Russian market.

How much does India currently export to Russia?

This step has been taken at a time when both the countries are working towards increasing bilateral trade between them to 100 billion dollars by 2030. India currently sends only $1.7 billion worth of these products to Russia, whereas Russia imports a total of $37.4 billion in this category. This difference is quite big. Now it remains to be seen which of these big export spaces India can target. Moreover, the higher the shipment, the lower India’s trade deficit with Russia, which currently stands at $59 billion.

Imports from Russia to India are increasing

The country’s Commerce Ministry has shortlisted several high-potential products to increase India’s supply to meet Russia’s import demand in several major sectors. These include engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, agricultural and chemical products on a large scale, which Russia imports from other countries.

According to PTI report, India’s share in Russia’s total import basket is about 2.3 percent. Whereas imports from Russia have increased continuously, increasing from $5.94 billion in 2020 to $64.24 billion in 2024. The main reason for this is crude oil, which has increased from $ 2 billion in 2020 to $ 57 billion in 2024. Oil now accounts for about 21 percent of India’s total crude oil imports from Russia.

Amidst America’s new tariff policy and changes in global trade equations, India has now started seeing Russia’s huge market as a new opportunity. The visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India has further strengthened these possibilities. The business world is believing that India-Russia trade can reach new heights in the coming times.

Amidst increasing trade uncertainty in America, India’s eyes are now fixed on Russia. Brijesh Goyal, Chairman of Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), the country’s leading business organization, told the ABP Live team that India currently exports about 5 billion dollars to Russia, but this figure is much less than Russia’s capacity. At the same time, China is maintaining a strong hold on the Russian market by exporting about 115 billion dollars.

Expectations increased due to Putin’s visit

Goyal believes that President Putin’s visit to India has given rise to new possibilities for trade between the two countries. He says that in the near future, India’s exports to Russia can increase to 10 billion dollars annually. Starting trade in local currency can also accelerate this growth.

From smartphones to medicines – still a big gap

India has become the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer, yet India exports only $75 million worth of mobile phones to Russia. India has a strong hold in the field of medicines, yet medicines worth only $245 million are sent to Russia. Not only this, India’s export in textile sector is only 29 million dollars, which is considered very low compared to its potential.

Business can increase in many sectors

Brijesh Goyal said that there is huge potential for India in Russia in electronics, machinery, textiles, pharma and many other sectors. He also said that starting transactions in indigenous currency will make business easier and the penetration of Indian products in Russia can become stronger.

US tariff shock and Russia’s option

CTI believes that India’s exports to the US market have been affected after the Trump administration imposed 50% import duty on India. In such a situation, Russia can become a strong and reliable option, where there is a large consumer base for Indian goods.

New avenues will open in defense and maritime sectors also

India has been an important partner of Russia in the defense sector for a long time. Goyal said that while Russia provides defense equipment to India, there can also be a possibility of their production units in India in the future. On the other hand, Russia is showing increasing interest in importing Indian marine products, which will give further impetus to bilateral trade.

Indian Products in Russia: India buys crude oil from Russia on a large scale. Due to this, US President Donald Trump doubled the 25 percent tariff on India as a penalty. Now 50 percent tariff is imposed on goods imported from India into America.

However, trade between India and Russia is not limited to crude oil only. Its scope is increasing in various segments like pharmaceuticals, construction materials, processed food, interior, electronics etc. Today there is a trade of more than USD 68 billion between the two countries. Let us see in this order what all the things Russia buys from India on a large scale:-

tea and spices

Indian tea and its spices are recognized all over the world. There is a good demand for them in Russia also. In the last few years, the trend of Indian masala tea has increased rapidly here. In the harsh cold, people here like to enjoy masala tea by sipping it. Apart from this, you can easily find Indian spices like cinnamon, bay leaf, turmeric, garam masala, cardamom, cloves in the supermarket of any city in Russia.

grains and pulses

Russia also buys pulses from India on a large scale. Especially, lentils. Apart from this, Russia also imports moong, gram and yellow peas from India. Coffee, rice, banana, papaya, processed food, meat are also sent from India to Russia.

basmati rice

Russia is also crazy about India’s beautiful, high quality Basmati rice. Its demand is continuously increasing here. Not only are they fragrant and tasty to eat, but they are also very beneficial for health because they contain more fiber and have a lower glycemic index. In such a situation, Basmati rice is also sent to Russia in large quantities from India.

vegetables

India also exports vegetables in large quantities to Russia. This list includes grapes, raisins and dry vegetables as well as onion, cabbage, garlic, ginger and root vegetables. According to India’s export data, the total export of vegetable products to Russia in 2024-25 was $75,229,407.

textile

A lot of clothes are also sent from India to Russia. These include clothes made from silk to cotton clothes. India also buys raw materials for this from Russia.

pharmaceuticals

With the increase in exports in the last few years, India has become Russia’s top pharmaceutical resource. According to India export data, India’s pharmaceutical exports to Russia in 2024-25 were worth $520,549,626.

machinery

India exports machinery and mechanical appliances to Russia for its domestic infrastructure development and modernization. With the increase in India-Russia trade, machinery and mechanical appliances came first in the top product list.

Indian restaurants in Russia

Apart from this, people in Russia also like cooked Indian food very much. There are many such Indian restaurants from Moscow to St. Petersburg, where not only are there crowds of expatriates, but Russians are also seen tasting Indian food. In the customer list of these restaurants, 70–80 customers are Russians.

Yoga is an ancient tradition of India, which is now being adopted by the whole world. In all the big cities of Russia like Moscow, St. Petersburg and Vladivostok, you will find Ayurvedic treatment centers, yoga studios, massage therapy centers. Their popularity is gradually increasing here. Apart from this, herbal oils and skincare products are also in great demand. There is also a good demand for yoga instructors in Russia. The concept of ‘Natural Healing’ is emerging among the Russian people.

magic of bollywood

The era of Bollywood craze that started in Russia with veteran actor Raj Kapoor’s film ‘Awara’ continues even today. Films like ‘Awara’, ‘Shree 420’ were widely watched in Russian theatres. 640 lakh tickets of the film ‘Awara’ were sold in Russia. You can understand to what extent the people there are crazy about Indian cinema. Russian people like spicy Indian films, which have strong stories, songs and good dialogues. This is the reason why in today’s time, films like ‘Dangal’, ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Baahubali’ are also liked by the people here.

Russian Tvarov is a traditional Russian dairy product. It looks like a kind of cheese or curd, which is made by fermentation. It is similar to Indian cheese or curd, but its texture is softer, grainier and less salty. In Russia it is a staple food item, eaten as breakfast, dessert or snack. Or Putin’s favorite breakfast. He also takes it with him on foreign trips.

Twarov was created by farmers in the 10th century
The history of Tvarov is linked to Slavic culture, dating back to the 10th century. Tvarov is a Slavic word meaning ‘fermented milk’. It was a cheap and nutritious food for peasant families in ancient Russia because the cold climate of Russia did not allow milk products to spoil.

Today it is found in every house in Russia. Many people, including Putin’s grandfather Spiridon Putin, considered it a symbol of traditional Russian food, which is also reflected in Putin’s diet. Every person in Russia eats 15 kg of tvarov annually.

After all, how is this Twarov made?
According to The Moscow Times, making tvarov is very simple and can be easily made at home. For this, milk and starter culture (like curd or lemon juice) is required…

First of all, heat 1 liter full-fat milk lightly, but do not let it boil.

Mix curd or lemon juice in it and keep it for 10-15 minutes. The milk will curdle and the solid part will separate.

Strain through a muslin cloth and hang for 4-6 hours so that the extra water drains out.

Here, soft and grainy twarov is ready. It can be kept in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

How is Putin’s Tvarov different?
Putin prefers Tvarov with a more granular texture. It has less fat and is beneficial for health. 100 grams of Putin contains approximately 100-150 calories, 18 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat. It contains 150-200 mg calcium, 3-4 grams carbs, probiotics and vitamin B12. Being high in protein, it controls appetite, that is why Putin travels abroad with only salad and tavarov.

Even cows get special treatment for Putin’s twarov. According to a report published in Russia Today, Putin’s Tvarov comes from a special farm outside Moscow, where milk-yielding cows are monitored 24 hours a day.

In 1911, the British government shifted its capital from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi. In 1919, he included the kings of the states in the ‘Chamber of Princes’, so that accommodation could be arranged when they came to Delhi. Then Nizam Osman Ali bought 8.2 acres of land in 1919 itself and construction of Hyderabad Palace started. Hyderabad House was completed by 1928. But Usman Ali never used it much. In the 1920s, its cost was around 2,00,000 pounds, which in today’s times is more than Rs 170 crore. This palace was as per the Nizam’s grandeur and wishes in every way.

After independence, Government of India got ‘Hyderabad House’
Celebrating 100 years: The tale of Delhi’s iconic Hyderabad House According to the report, India’s independence in 1947 changed the fortunes of Hyderabad House as the merger of the princely states into the Indian Union began. Hyderabad protested against the forced merger by launching Operation Polo in September 1948. After the merger, Hyderabad House became government property.

Since 1974, it has been with the Ministry of External Affairs and is the state guest house of the Prime Minister. It is one of the 28 royal palaces in Delhi that were built during the British era, like Patiala House or Jaipur House. Today, foreign leaders come and stay here and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

There is no dearth of luxury in the butterfly shaped palace.
This palace looks like a butterfly. For this reason it is called ‘butterfly shaped’. It was designed by the famous British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who was the creator of big buildings like Delhi’s National Museum and Rashtrapati Bhavan. This palace is spread over 8.2 to 8.77 acres. It has a total of 36 rooms, including 1 zenana (separate section for women). Now some rooms have been converted into dining halls.

The main entrance is a big dome, below which is the hall. There are butterfly-like wings installed at a 55 degree angle on both sides.

The chhatris and arches are made of mixed artefacts of Mughal and European style.

Inside the palace, there are rhombic (deer-shaped) designs on the marble floor, circular lobby, stairs, archways and tall pyramid-like stone obelisks.

Outside the palace there is a square garden, circular lobby and a big dome. This is the largest and grandest palace of Delhi after Victoria House.

The Nizam had ordered 3 dozen hand-paintings for this palace from Lahore-based painter Abdurrahman Chughtai, which were inspired by Islamic and Mughal art.

2 interesting stories of Hyderabad House

According to the book ‘The Patriot’ published in 2024-

Nizam disliked the palace: Osman Ali saw the palace for the first time after 10 years i.e. in 1936. He didn’t like it because it looked too western. He called it ‘horse stable’. Even his sons did not like it, so Nizam rarely came here.

Nizam’s ghost appeared: This palace has been shown in many films. A scene of independence meetings was being shot in the film ‘Gandhi’. Then the crew members felt as if Nizam’s spirit was roaming around but it was just a joke. This palace is not just made of stones, but is a living example of history.

Putin India Visit: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India is taking place at the exact time when the combination of full moon, Rohini Nakshatra, Taurus moon and Amrit Choghadiya is taking place. This yoga is considered a sign of long-term decisions and strong partnerships in astrology.

For this reason this trip to India-Russia appears to be taking relations to a new phase in energy, defence, trade and new strategic plans. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomacy directly links this visit to India’s independent foreign policy and direction for the coming years.

1. Why is this journey important?

Putin’s arrival 6:35 PM (estimate). According to the calendar, this time will be the date of full moon. Which can give strength to big decisions. At the time of arrival, there is a coincidence of Rohini Nakshatra. Which is indicating towards economic and energy stability. The important thing is that this meeting is going to take place on the day of Annapurna Jayanti. In Hindu religion, Annapurna is a festival which is considered a symbol of food, resources and energy security.

On December 4, the Moon is transiting in Taurus. Which is also indicating to secure resources somewhere. Amrit Choghadiya being formed at this time is proving auspicious for government and diplomatic work. At the time of Putin’s arrival in India, Gemini ascendant is being formed which is creating a strong possibility of negotiation, balance and compromise. Because its lord is planet Mercury. The positions of other planets are also testifying to the success of this journey.

At the time of Putin’s visit to India, the Sun will be in Scorpio, which strengthens confidential and serious diplomacy, while the Moon being in Taurus and Rohini Nakshatra creates the possibility of decisions on energy, resources and economic security.

Mars will be in its strongest position in Scorpio which shows that there will be direct talks on defense and security. Mercury in Libra will make negotiations and agreements easier.

Due to Jupiter being high in Cancer, this meeting appears to give long term benefits. Venus in Scorpio gives depth to trade, minerals and economic relations. Due to Saturn being in Pisces, decisions will be slow but permanent. At the same time, Rahu-Ketu being in Aquarius and Leo indicate that in the changing environment of the world, India-Russia relations are now entering a phase of new balance.

2. modi-Putin Meeting: Strengthening India’s independent foreign policy

Prime Minister Modi’s foreign policy has shown many times in the last decade that India no longer depends on any global group to take decisions. India’s priorities in this visit-

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Thursday (October 16, 2025) that Russia is confident that its energy cooperation with India will continue. This statement of Novak has come at a time when US President Donald Trump had claimed a day earlier that India had assured him to stop buying oil from Russia.

Independent news agency ‘Interfax’ quoted Novak as saying, ‘We will continue cooperation with our friendly partners. The demand for our energy resources remains. This is economically viable and practical. Novak said, ‘I am confident that our partners will continue to work with us, negotiate and develop energy cooperation.’

India’s response to Trump’s oil trade claims

Novak has made this comment in response to Trump’s claim, in which the US President had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that India will stop buying Russian crude oil. The US President claimed that although India will not be able to immediately cut purchases, it will definitely start doing so. Novak said, ‘All we hear in the media today is that our partners are declaring that no one can dictate to them and that they will choose their own path.’

Responding to Trump’s oil trade claims, India on Thursday said it is broadening and diversifying its energy sources to meet market conditions. India emphasized that its import policies will be completely based on national interest.

India increased oil trade from February 2022

India, traditionally dependent on West Asian oil, significantly increased its imports from Russia following the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Due to Western sanctions and reduced European demand, Russian oil is becoming available at huge discounts.

According to independent news agency ‘Interfax’, Russian crude oil exports in the first seven months of 2025 stood at 87.5 million tonnes or 36.4 percent of India’s total imports. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said that he has ordered the government to take steps to reduce the trade imbalance with India.

Vladimir Putin once again proved that Russia is a true friend of India. He has said that his government will take measures to reduce the damage caused by tariff to India. Russia can buy more pharmaceutical and agricultural products from India.

Putin has criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose 50 percent tariff on India. He has instructed his government to take measures to reduce the trade imbalance being caused to India due to purchasing crude oil from Russia. India buys crude oil from Russia on a large scale, due to which there is a huge imbalance in trade between the two countries. Now due to buying Russian oil, America is putting pressure on India by putting huge tariffs, so Putin wants to reduce trade imbalance between the two countries.

On Thursday (October 2, 2025), Putin said this in the Black Sea Resort in Sochi, Russia, in the International Valdai discussion of the security of 140 countries including India and the International Validai discussion. He said that the loss of India from American tariffs will be repaid by import of Russian crude oil and India will also get a reputation as a sovereign nation.

Russia will buy medicines from India
Putin has indicated that Russia can buy medicines from India to compensate for this loss. He said that this trade imbalance can be reduced by purchasing India’s pharmaceutical and agricultural products. Last month, Trump had announced a 100 percent tariff on India’s patent drugs from October 1, while generic medicines were excluded from it.

Vladimir Putin said that there is no political aspect in the measures he has asked for India to take business, this is an economic calculation. He said that if India leaves Russian resources, then it will cause a lot of damage. He said that different estimates have been made, some say that there may be a loss of 9-10 billion dollars, but if he does not do so, then he will be seated and that loss is going to be the same.

Putin said why India will do this, if it leaves Russian resources, then it will also cause domestic political losses and Indians will never let their insults be insulted. He said, ‘Indian people never give anyone a chance to insult. I know Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he will never take such a decision.

Indians will not allow their insults, said Putin
Putin said on the relations between India and Russia that there was never any problem between us, it never happened that due to some reason there was a tension situation between the two countries. Vladimir Putin said that the relations between India and Russia are strong since the time of the Soviet Union, India was struggling for independence at that time.

He said that the people of India have not forgotten it even today, they know our relationship and appreciate it. We praise that India never ignored its relationship with Russia. Putin appreciated the Nationalist Government of India led by PM Modi and described PM Modi as a balanced, intelligent and nation -friendly leader.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday (September 14, 2025) over the heavy tariff imposed by the US on India due to oil imports from Russia, that we praise India that they continued to have relations with Russia even after Donald Trump has increased duty on Indian imports. The Russian government said that any attempt to harm relations with India would be a failure.

In its statement to RTV, the Russian Ministry said that it thanks India that they continued to cooperate with Russia even after the pressure and threats. Officials said, “To be honest, it is difficult to imagine anything else.”

‘Attempt to obstruct India-Russia relations failed’

The Russian Ministry further said that relations between India and Russia are moving forward with confidence and all the efforts of those who obstruct this process will fail. Russia’s statement came after bitterness in trade relations between India and America. Trump, by imposing 50 percent tariff on Indian import goods, warned that if India does not stop the oil imports from Russia, America will continue this tax.

Donald Trump has repeatedly accused India of ‘promoting Russia’s deadly attacks’ by purchasing Russian oil, while his government has avoided strict ban on Russia. India has condemned the tariff as unfair and condemned it. India has pointed to the purchases being made from Russia by America and Europe.

‘Sovereignty of every country is most important’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke of strengthening the relations with China and Russia despite America’s huge tax tariffs during the SCO summit at Tianjin. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that India’s approach to relations with Russia reflects ‘long -term friendship and traditions of long -term friendship’ and New Delhi’s ‘Strategic Autonomy in International Affairs’.

The statement of the Russian Ministry said that the friendship of India and Russia rests on the thinking that the freedom (sovereignty) of every country is most important and the interests of their country come first. This relationship is a trusted, clear understanding and a strong strategic partnership in real ways.
