Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India won the T20 World Cup title this year. Surya’s form was going down for a long time, but Ravichandran Ashwin believes that he should have been given one last chance to prove himself on the England tour.

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin said, “If I put myself in Suryakumar Yadav’s place, of course my form has not been good for the last 15 or 18 months, but as a captain, I have just won the T20 World Cup for the country. As a captain, his performance has been good, he played his role very well.”

Should have got a chance in England- Ashwin

Suryakumar Yadav’s form remained poor even in IPL 2026 after the T20 World Cup. While playing for MI, he scored 270 runs at a strike rate of 147.54 this season. However, Ravichandran Ashwin feels that Surya should have been given a chance on the England tour. You should have told him that if you do not perform in this series, you will be dropped.”

What did Ashwin say on Shreyas Iyer being made captain?

There has also been talk of making Tilak Verma the vice-captain. Along with making Shreyas the captain, top BCCI officials have also agreed to make Tilak the vice-captain. The decision to make Shreyas the captain and Tilak the vice-captain has been taken unanimously by the selectors and coaches.

Squad will be released on 06th June

Team India will be announced for the T20 series to be held on Ireland tour on June 06, in which Iyer will be officially announced as the captain.

A question is also arising whether T20 World Cup winning captain Surya will get a place in the team after his removal from the captaincy?
