An Indian citizen has died in a firing incident related to a family dispute in the US state of Georgia. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday (January 23, 2026) in the city of Lawrenceville, where four people were shot inside the same house. Three children were also present in the house at the time of the incident, who somehow managed to save their lives.

According to PTI reports, around 2:30 am on Friday, police received information about firing in Brook Ivy Court area. Upon arriving at the scene, police found the bodies of four adults inside the home, all of whom had died from gunshot wounds. An Indian origin woman is also included among the dead.

Indian Embassy expressed condolences

The Indian Consulate in Atlanta has expressed deep sorrow over this incident. The embassy said on the social media platform ‘X’ that the incident is allegedly related to a family dispute and an Indian citizen has lost his life. The embassy said that the accused has been arrested and all possible assistance is being provided to the victim’s family.

Identification and charges of the accused

Police have identified the accused as 51-year-old Vijay Kumar, a resident of Atlanta. According to the police, the deceased include Vijay Kumar’s wife Meemu Dogra (43), Gaurav Kumar (33), Nidhi Chander (37) and Harish Chander (38). A case has been registered against Vijay Kumar under several serious sections including murder of four people, serious assault and cruelty towards children.

Children’s wisdom saved lives

During this tragic incident, the three children present in the house somehow managed to save themselves. According to police officials, the children hid in a cupboard as soon as the firing started. One of these children showed courage and called 911 and informed the police about the incident, due to which the police could reach the spot within a few minutes. The children were not physically harmed and were later handed over to a family member.
