Even after adding the high power electric locomotive worth Rs 15 to 20 crore, the total cost of a Rajdhani or Shatabdi train usually remains within Rs 80 to 90 crore. In comparison, Vande Bharat train is overall more expensive by about 30 to 40%.

The biggest reason for increasing costs

The biggest reason for the high cost of Vande Bharat is its distributed power or self-propulsion technology. Unlike Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains which depend on a single locomotive, Vande Bharat has electric traction motors fitted under every second or third coach.

Advanced technology and passenger convenience

Vande Bharat Bharat features fully automatic sliding doors, sealed gangways, aircraft style seating, sensor based bio toilets and onboard diagnostics. Regenerative braking is sometimes used in this, which generates electricity during braking and sends it back to the system.

Along with this, safety is also another big contributor to the price. Vande Bharat trains are factory-installed with India’s own train protection system armour, CCTV cameras, fire detection and extinguishing systems as well as emergency talk-back facility. According to Indian Railways, large-scale production is expected to reduce costs over time. As production increases, the per unit cost is likely to reduce.

How many passengers will be able to travel?

This hydrogen train has 10 coaches and its total power is 2400 kilowatts. There are two driving power cars in the train. The capacity of each of which is 1200 kilowatts. About 2500 passengers will be able to travel in it at one time. Its maximum speed has been kept at 140 kilometers per hour. Talking about fuel, this train can travel about 180 kilometers with 360 kg hydrogen.

This means that about two kilos of hydrogen will be spent in walking one kilometre. In comparison, a diesel train consumes four and a half liters of diesel in one kilometer. This train has cost about Rs 82 crore and its coaches have been manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.

The journey would be completely different without sound

This train has been prepared on the lines of metro. The train will leave the station only after the coach doors are completely closed. There will be almost no sound during running. The engine is completely based on hydrogen fuel cell technology. In this, electricity is generated by the controlled reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. Which charges the battery. Fare increased by 2 paisa per kilometer in AC class

Whereas in non-AC category of mail and express trains, there has been an increase of 2 paise per kilometer. The fare in AC class has also been increased by 2 paise per kilometer. However, it is a matter of relief that there will be no increase in fare for journeys up to 215 kilometers in ordinary class. For example, on non-AC journey of 500 km, passengers will now have to pay approximately Rs 10 extra.

Expenditure on pension reached Rs 60,000 crore

Railways says that this new fare structure is expected to generate additional income of about Rs 600 crore in the current financial year. Railways has cited rising costs as the reason behind increasing the fare. According to the department, the human resource cost of Railways has increased to Rs 1,15,000 crore. Whereas the expenditure on pension has reached Rs 60,000 crore. The total operating cost of Railways in the year 2024-25 is estimated to be Rs 2,63,000 crore. All coaches have been provided with CCTV, emergency talk-back unit for passengers in case of emergency, centralized coach monitoring system to monitor passenger amenities and ergonomically designed stairs to climb to the upper berth and special toilets for disabled passengers.

Relief on Bihar-Delhi route too, ECR increased AC seats

East Central Railway has taken special steps for the passengers going from Patna to Delhi. Five additional trips are being run in Rajendra Nagar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express from 6 to 10 December. Along with this, the number of 2AC coaches in the train has also been increased, due to which the pressure on the seats on Patna-Delhi route has been reduced the most.

East Coast, Eastern and NFR also increased capacity

For passengers going from Odisha to Delhi, East Coast Railway has added 2AC coaches in trains number 20817, 20811 and 20823 in 5 trips. On the other hand, Eastern Railway has increased sleeper coaches in three main trains on 7th and 8th December. For North-East passengers, Northeast Frontier Railway has made a big increase in 3AC and sleeper seats with eight additional trips between December 6 and 13.

Railways also ran four special trains

To rescue stranded passengers and make long distance travel easier, Railways has run 4 special trains. These include Gorakhpur–Anand Vihar Special, New Delhi–Mumbai Central Special, Vande Bharat Special for New Delhi–Srinagar region and Hazrat Nizamuddin–Thiruvananthapuram Special.
