IndiGo Flight Disruption: IndiGo, one of the largest airline companies in the country, is once again under the scanner regarding safety and compliance with rules. Aviation regulator DCGA has warned the airline against negligence in the rules related to handling of dangerous goods. DCGA’s investigation has revealed some cases in which prescribed security procedures were not followed.

After this action, the discussion regarding the safety of passengers has intensified. However, DCGA has not yet imposed any fine in this matter, but has warned to improve the rules and has sought an action taken report from the airline.

What is the whole matter?
The investigation conducted by DCGA has found some deficiencies in IndiGo’s engineering storage and handling process of dangerous goods. The investigation revealed that in some cases, rules and standard operating procedures for handling dangerous goods were not completely followed.

The airline also mentioned an incident in which a problem related to dangerous goods sent in flight came to light. After this, DCGA showed strictness regarding safety rules and instructed IndiGo to make improvements.

When did DCGA take major action against Indigo?

1. July 2026
DCGA found in a special audit that IndiGo did not fully follow certain safety rules and SOPs related to handling of dangerous goods. After this, a warning letter was issued to the airline and a report was sought after making improvements within a month. No fine was imposed in this case, only a warning was given.

2. January 2026
DCGA imposed a record fine of Rs 22.20 crore on IndiGo for cancellation and delay of thousands of flights in December 2025. The investigation found that there were serious deficiencies in operation planning, crew management and regulatory preparation. DCGA also asked for a bank guarantee of Rs 50 crore from the airline so that such a situation does not happen again in future.

3. October 2025
DCGA had imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh on IndiGo for lack of compliance with the rules related to pilot training and Category C airport operation. The airline later said it would challenge this order.

4. December 2025
During the flight cancellation crisis, DCGA issued show-cause notices to senior officials including the CEO of IndiGo. Apart from this, special monitoring was kept on the airline’s flights, officers were deployed at the airport and operation control center and regular reports were sought from the company. This action later became the basis for a fine of Rs 22.20 crore.

According to the company, minor technology glitches, winter schedule changes, bad weather, air traffic congestion and new FDTL crew rostering rules have had a compounding negative impact on the entire system. The airline also said that it was not possible to anticipate such an impact, hence the sudden pressure on operations. On December 4, IndiGo’s on-time performance at six metro airports was only 8.5%.
