As the winter season approaches, dense fog and poor air quality become common in Delhi-NCR. Its biggest impact is seen at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport). Sometimes the situation becomes such that only a few meters in front can be seen. If visibility falls below 50 to 100 meters, flight operations are directly affected.

In such a situation, passengers have to face problems like flight delay, cancellation or diversion to some other city. Therefore, if you are planning to travel by flight in winter, then it becomes very important to check the latest status of your flight before leaving for the airport. In such a situation, let us know how to check the live status of your flight if it is getting delayed due to fog.

What effect does low visibility have on flights?
When visibility becomes very low at Delhi Airport due to fog, Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) are implemented. Under this, more gap is kept between landing and take-off of planes. The speed of air traffic is slowed down for security reasons. Delay in flights becomes common. If the situation worsens, flights may also be cancelled. Many flights have to be diverted to other airports, meaning passengers may have to wait at the airport for hours.
Delhi Airport and DGCA warning

While issuing advisory for the passengers, Delhi Airport Authority has clearly said that they should not come to the airport without confirming the status of their flight. DGCA has declared 10 December 2025 to 10 February 2026 as the official fog window this year. During this period, due to fog in North India, flight operations may be continuously affected. General visibility in Delhi was recorded only around 50 meters. Vehicles were plying on the roads with hazard lights on and many flights had to be diverted.

How to check live flight status in fog?

1. Check status from the official website of Delhi Airport – Live Flight Information option is available on the official website of IGI Airport. Here you can see the arrival and departure time, whether the flight is late or not, cancellation or diversion information in real time.

2. Use the airline’s website or mobile app – All big airlines like Air India, IndiGo provide the facility to check flight status on their website and mobile app. You can get instant information by entering flight number or PNR.

3. Keep notifications and SMS alerts on – If you do not want to visit the website again and again, then turn on notifications in the airline app. You will continue to get every important information like flight delay, gate change, cancellation through SMS or email.

4. Get information from social media and customer care – Airlines issue real-time updates and advisories on their X and Instagram accounts. Apart from this, you can also know the flight status by calling the customer care helpline of the airline.

How to check Indigo flight status online?

If you are traveling by Indigo, then goindigo.com Go to the website, click on Trips option above, select Flight Status tab, enter flight number or PNR. Select departure, arrival and travel date. Click on Search Flight. Now the live status of your flight will be visible on the screen.

Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu said that IndiGo will have to process all refunds by 8 pm on Sunday (December 7) and also settle baggage claim requests within the next 48 hours.

Question: Flight cancellations and irregularities continue in IndiGo, causing problems to passengers. When will this problem be solved? What steps has the ministry taken?

answer: We have been working continuously on this issue for the last three days. IndiGo is coordinating with airport operators and all other stakeholders. Our focus is on reducing the hassles of passengers and travelers at the airport. I can say that today, operations at all airports have become normal to a great extent. You can see for yourself that things have returned to normal, although IndiGo has temporarily reduced some of its operations.

He said, “We have also directed them to normalize operations as soon as possible. We also do not want the airfares to increase. We have issued an advisory regarding fares, which should be based on distance. We have issued strict instructions in this regard. The ministry has issued strict orders regarding issues related to baggage claims and refunds.”

He said, “We have directed IndiGo to process all refunds by 8 pm on Sunday. All baggage claim requests must be settled within 48 hours. Our main focus is on passengers and we are working diligently to ensure that they do not face any inconvenience.”

Question: What action will be taken against Indigo? According to the passengers, the airline has broken their trust. How do you see it?

answer: We are doing a thorough investigation of Indigo. We will take all necessary steps with utmost caution. The ministry has also formed a team of four members for this.

After the cancellation of a large number of Indigo flights and the sudden increase in ticket prices, the Aviation Ministry has taken a big step and imposed a maximum limit on the fares of domestic economy class flights. This decision has been taken for the safety of passengers and to stop excessive fare collection.

Government imposed cap on domestic flight fares
Amidst the IndiGo crisis and rising air fares, the government has set a maximum limit on domestic flight fares. This rule has come into effect immediately from 6 December 2025. The new prices are as follows:

Distance (km) Maximum fare
0–500 KM ₹7,500
500–1000 KM ₹12,000
1000–1500 KM ₹15,000
More than 1500 KM ₹18,000

The government has clarified that these fare limits do not include Airport Development Fee (UDF), Passenger Service Fee (PSF) and taxes. Also, this rule will not apply to business class and flights operating under the UDAN scheme.

IndiGo announces relief for passengers
Indigo has announced that cancellation charges will be completely waived on all tickets traveling from 5 December 2025 to 15 December 2025. IndiGo has also said that no additional charges will be levied on rescheduling and refunds will be automatically sent back to the passengers’ original payment mode. Passengers will not have to take any additional action for this process.

The situation of flight cancellations still continues
Although the situation is improving at some places, the process of cancellation of flights is still going on across the country. More than 1,000 flights remained closed on Friday and 550 flights were canceled the previous day. Improvement is visible in Delhi, but problems still persist in other airports like Thiruvananthapuram and Ahmedabad, where 9 and 19 flights were cancelled.

Government said- operations will be normal soon
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has said that flight operations are rapidly returning to normal and the chaos is expected to end to a large extent by Sunday. He said that a committee has been formed to investigate the causes of the problem, which is reviewing airline operations, scheduling and compliance with rules.

On the cancellation of IndiGo flights, aviation expert Subhash Goyal said, ‘To make air travel safe, pilots were demanding more rest hours in line with international rules. Therefore, after the court order, DGCA issued new rules. All airlines were instructed more than a year ago to recruit more pilots and staff and prepare for the new rules. All airlines like Akasa, SpiceJet, Air India and Air India Express followed this. However, IndiGo not only flouted the rules but also expanded its international route network and increased domestic flights without increasing the number of crew and pilots. As a result, when the government wanted to enforce the policy deadline, IndiGo stopped most of its flights instead of reducing some of its flights. This caused complete anarchy.
