Indigo GST Notice: There is no sign of any end to the troubles for the country’s largest airline company Indigo. The company is already facing problems. Now another trouble has come from above. A demand notice of Rs 58,74,99,439 has been sent to the company for the financial year 2020-21.

IndiGo said on Friday that it has received a tax penalty notice of Rs 58.75 crore from the Additional Commissioner of CGST, Delhi South Commissionerate. This order includes GST along with penalty. However, the airline has also said that it will challenge this order.

The company considered the order wrong

The company has considered this order wrong and said that it plans to challenge it. For this, advice is also being taken from external tax consultants. In the information given to BSE, Indigo stressed that this notice is not expected to have any significant impact on its financial status, daily operations and business activities. Indigo has faced such investigations before also. However, this notice has been sent to the company at a time when it is already going through a critical phase.

The company is facing crisis

Since the first week of December, Indigo has been facing continuous flight cancellations, which has created chaos in the airline industry. This GST notice sent to the company at a time of operational and financial pressure is no less than a challenge in itself.

Meanwhile, DGCA is busy investigating the IndiGo crisis to get to the bottom of it and find out the root causes, hence IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers was called to appear before a committee of DGCA officials on 12 December. The situation is now improving slowly as compared to before.

Brokerage reduced target price

Meanwhile, global brokerage Jefferies has reduced its target price for IndiGo’s parent company InterGlobe Aviation to Rs 6,035, but maintained ‘buy’ rating. The firm said that recent operational issues and rising expenses are likely to put pressure on short-term earnings, but IndiGo’s strong market leadership and ongoing international expansion will continue to support a positive long-term outlook. By 1:30 pm on Friday, the stock was seen trading at Rs 4,846.50, up 0.58 per cent.

Indigo Crisis: Airline company IndiGo is going to face a setback in the third quarter of the financial year 2025. These days the company is already going through many problems. The company has already suffered a loss of about Rs 1,800 crore due to flight cancellation and the figure is still increasing. In such a situation, the company’s balance sheet is going to be in trouble in the third quarter.

Initially, the airline suffered a revenue loss of more than Rs 900 crore because the company had to return the money for canceled tickets till December 9. Now if the company is directed to pay compensation on tickets canceled due to flight disruption, the loss will increase even more.

8.86 lakh PNR canceled

According to the latest update of the airline, the company canceled 8.86 lakh PNRs for the period between December 1 to 9. According to the Passenger Charter of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, if a flight is canceled for more than 2 hours and the passenger is not informed before 24 hours, the airline will have to pay Rs 10,000 or the basic fare and airline fuel charge – whichever is less – as compensation. According to the charter, IndiGo was to pay more than Rs 886 crore by December 9. So, if IndiGo is ordered to make refund and compensation payments, the expenses will increase further.

Announcement of travel voucher of Rs 10000

Meanwhile, with operations gradually becoming stable, IndiGo said that the company will give a travel voucher of Rs 10,000 to all those passengers whose flights were canceled or delayed for a long time during December 3-5. The voucher can be used for flights in the next 12 months.

“This compensation is in addition to the commitment under the existing government guidelines, according to which, IndiGo will provide compensation of Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, depending on the block time of the flight, to those customers whose flights are canceled within 24 hours of the departure time,” the statement said. Large-scale cancellation or delay of flights affected thousands of passengers, but it is not yet clear how many of these passengers will get the benefit of compensation.

Airlines Fare: Due to operational problems in Indigo, many flights were canceled one after the other. Due to this, passengers are facing a lot of problems. A large number of people are stranded at airports.

Airline companies took advantage of this opportunity and increased air travel fares tenfold in one fell swoop. Now the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) had to come forward to control the sudden increase in fares. MoCA used emergency regulatory powers to control air fares.

Airlines took advantage of the opportunity

IndiGo is the country’s largest airline, which is facing operational problems since the first week of December. Thousands of passengers are having to suffer the consequences of this. There are reports of flights being canceled or delayed in many cities. To convert this disaster into an opportunity, many airline companies increased the rates of domestic flights.

Air fares skyrocketed overnight and at the last minute, ticket prices increased beyond normal levels. Taking this seriously, the Ministry has issued an official instruction, in which all airlines have been ordered to strictly follow the newly fixed fare limit on the affected routes until operations become normal.

Government took steps

An official statement issued by the government said, “The Civil Aviation Ministry has taken serious note of the concerns regarding exorbitant airfares being charged by some airlines during the ongoing crisis. “To protect passengers from any kind of predatory pricing, the Ministry has used its regulatory powers to ensure fair and reasonable fares on all affected routes.”

It was said by the ministry that these limits will remain in force until the situation becomes completely stable. According to the ministry, the purpose of this directive is to maintain pricing discipline in the market, prevent exploitation of passengers in distress and ensure that those who need to travel urgently – including senior citizens, students and patients – do not face financial problems during this period. The ministry also said that they will keep an eye on the situation. If any change is made other than the prescribed rules, immediate rectification action will be taken.

IndiGo loss 2025: The country’s well-known airline company Indigo has faced huge losses in the September quarter. The company has incurred a total net loss of Rs 2,582.10 crore. Last year also during the same quarter, the company had suffered a loss of Rs 986.7 crore. However, the company had made a profit of Rs 2,176.30 crore in the June quarter. According to IndiGo’s parent company InterGlobe Aviation, the main reason for this loss is the fall in the value of rupee against the dollar.

The company’s expenses increased due to the ongoing fluctuations in the rupee. Due to which the company had to suffer loss. The main expenses of airline companies are in fuel and maintenance of the airline. For both of these, airline companies pay in dollars. Due to fall in the value of rupee the company has to pay more. Due to which the company’s losses increase.

Indigo’s statement

IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers has informed that the company is going to launch its first long range Airbus A321 XLR aircraft in December. It will have 183 economy seats and 12 stretch seats. The CEO said that the inclusion of this aircraft will help the airline in expanding its international network.

Indigo is also planning to bring Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on damp lease. Damp lease means that the company will lease partial crew and maintenance services.

What is the plan next?

Albers has informed that after July, there has been stability in the industry and recovery has been seen in August-September. IndiGo’s share in the domestic market is 64.3 percent, which makes it the number one airline company in India. Now the company is focusing on new routes abroad. Due to which the company can benefit.
