India-Rus Trade: The trade deal has not yet been signed between India and America. Prior to this deal, Donald Trump’s Commerce Secretary Hovard Lutynik has given a big statement. He said that India will have to treat America properly.

Hovard Lutynik, Commerce Secretary, Donald Trump, also said that we have to improve many countries and also emphasized that such policies should be eliminated which are harming American interests.

‘India needs to open its market’

In an interview given to the News Nation, Lutynik said that India should open its market and should not adopt policies that can harm America. He said, ‘We have many countries that need to improve, such as Switzerland and Brazil. India is also such a country which should take the right steps towards America. Open your markets and stop work that harm America. This is why we have disagreement with these countries.

‘India will have to cooperate’

Lutnik said that business issues may be resolved over time, but if India wants to deliver its products to American customers, then it will have to cooperate with America. He said, ‘These issues will be resolved with time, but it will take time. These countries have to understand that if you want to sell American consumers, then you have to cooperate with the President of America. So there are some issues left. Big countries like India, they will be resolved over time. Lutnik also said, “The economy of 2026 will be the economy of Donald Trump.”

This statement came at a time when a high -level Indian team led by Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has visited America. The Ministry of Commerce said on 26 September that this tour had a successful talks to strengthen trade and investment relations between India and the US.

There may be quick relief in the huge tariffs imposed on India by America. Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anant Nageswaran hoped on Thursday that the resolution of the dispute with the US over high tariffs could be resolved in the next eight to ten weeks. The US had imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian products from August 27 for the purchase of oil from Russia. With this, the total tariff in America on Indian products has increased to 50 percent.

The conversation continues behind the curtain- V Anant Nagswaran
Nageswaran said in a program organized by the Board of Industry, ‘Negotiations are going on between the two governments behind the screen. I estimate that the tariff imposed by the US on Indian goods will come out in the next eight to ten weeks. He further said-‘I believe that punitive fees will not be applicable after November 30’. However, he warned that the export of Indian things to America may decline in the event of tariff continuing.

The relationship between the two countries due to tariff
After US President Donald Trump’s tariff growth decision, the relationship between the two countries became tense for some time. However, after receiving favorable indications at the level of top leadership, the discussion about the trade agreement between the two countries has started again. Describing India as a low-middle-income aspiration economy, the Chief Economic Advisor said that in the first quarter of the current financial year, the actual GDP (GDP) increased at a rate of 7.8 percent. After the Kovid epidemic, India has registered a faster growth compared to many countries. He said that with the progress of manufacturing, service and agricultural sectors, strengthening of rural demand and improvement in urban demand will give the basis of economic growth in the next two years.

What Nageshwaran said on relief in GST rates?
Nagswaran said that the relief given in GST rates recently will increase additional income in the hands of consumers. The MSME sector has increased loans and large industry units are facing structural changes in debt distribution. He said that in the first quarter of the current financial year, the current account deficit of GDP was reduced to 0.2 percent and foreign exchange reserves are also healthy. He said, “Though the rupee is weakening against the dollar, but given the strength of the economy, I am sure that the rupee will maintain its value in the long run and it will also strengthen it.”

Nagswaran said that the priorities of the government include capital expenditure, encouragement of private investment and improvement in regulatory structure. He called upon the private sector to spend more on innovation and research. On the impact of AI on the Arthi system, he said that its impact is limited at present but there will be pressure on coding jobs. He said that in such a situation people will have to increase their skills.

Democrats of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee have criticized President Donald Trump and his administration. He says that only India is being targeted to buy oil from Russia, while big buyers like China are exempted.

Tariff damage to America and relations
Democrats say that 50% of tariffs on Trump’s Indian imports have damaged Americans and are damaging Indo-US relations made up of the last two decades of bipartite attempts. He said that “instead of banning China or other countries, only targeting India is weakening the US-India relations. It is almost as the case is not related to Ukraine.”

NYT report cited
The panel, citing the report of the New York Times, said that if the Trump administration had imposed a secondary ban on every country buying oil from Russia, the matter was different. But by focusing only on India, this has become the most confused policy result, because China is still buying Russian oil at a discount after getting discounts.

New tariffs and effects
The attack of Democrats came when the additional 25% tariffs (above 25% applied) applied by Trump became effective. In this way the tariff rate has doubled. Trump has linked it to India’s Russian oil trade.

According to the Government of India, these tariffs will have an impact on export of $ 48.2 billion. Officials have warned that new duties can make the US a commercially non-practical, which can reduce employment and slow the economic growth.

Modi government’s attitude
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clarified that India will not bow under pressure. However, the US has exempted some sectors such as pharmaceuticals and electronic goods, which has given partial relief to India.

Status of trade relations
Indo-US trade relations have been strengthened in recent years, but they are still affected by controversies on market access and domestic political pressures. India was in early countries that started trade talks with the Trump administration, but so far no agreement has been reached as America has been demanding more reach in India’s agriculture and dairy sector.

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley has given a clear warning that the US-India relations are on the verge of breaking up. He said that if America wants to rein in China’s growing ambitions, then it will have to give priority to relations with India.

In an article published in Newsweek on Wednesday (20 August 2025), Haley wrote that America should not ignore the most important thing that our target is China. America must have a friend as India to face him.

To counter China, rebuild us – India relationship, more here: https://t.co/ji29unzvnx pic.twitter.com/YHUFS1LGXH

– Nikki Haley (@nikkihaley) August 20, 2025

Controversy over tariffs and dandruff
Haley’s statement comes at a time when there has been an increased tension between America and India over trade disputes and Russian oil imports. President Donald Trump has imposed 25% mutual fee and 25% additional tariffs on India, which will be applicable from August 27. Haley admitted that Russia is getting financial help for Ukraine War due to India buying oil, but at the same time he warned that it would be a strategic mistake to treat India like an enemy.

India’s important role in stopping China
Haley said that India is the only country to combat China’s dominance in Asia. India has the ability to manufacture on a scale like China, which can help America to meet the demand for its supply chain through India instead of China. India’s strong defense relations with countries like America and Israel make it important for the safety of the world. Haley believes that India will weaken China’s ambitions in the coming time.

Trump-Modi conversation appeal
Haley suggested that President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should talk directly to remove misunderstandings between the two countries. He said that if this does not happen, China will take advantage of this rift. Haley referred to her article in 1982 from Indira Gandhi’s words of US President Ronald Reagan. He wrote that America and India can sometimes adopt different routes, but their destination should remain the same.

India and America have now reached the lowest level of several decades. India does not seem to get relief from the tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump. According to sources, on Saturday (August 16, 2025), India suffered a major setback when the US postponed the sixth round of the proposed bilateral trade agreement. This meeting was to be held in Delhi from 25 to 29 August. An American official said that the visit would probably be rescheduled later.

Sixth round postponed, shock to India
So far, five rounds of talks have been held between India and America regarding the trade deal. The sixth round of meeting was considered important, but due to its postponement, difficulties have increased for India. This delay will directly affect the tariff as the additional 25 percent penalty tariff i.e. 50 percent fees imposed by the US are going to be implemented from August 27.

American pressure on agriculture and dairy
The US wants it to get more markets in India’s agriculture and dairy sector. But India has made it clear that the interests of farmers will not be compromised. India is an agricultural country and if the American market interferes with the Indian agriculture sector, it will have a big impact on the farmers and the economy.

Future of trade
India and America have been a long time trade partner. The two countries have targeted that the first phase of bilateral trade deal will be completed by September-October 2025. Also, the plan is to increase bilateral trade by $ 500 billion by 2030. Currently, about $ 191 billion is being traded between the two countries.

Tariff’s effect
The US has imposed 25 percent tariff on India since August 7. Apart from this, due to purchasing crude oil and military equipment from Russia, an additional 25 percent punitive tariff has also been imposed on India, which will be applicable from August 27. This will affect both India’s exports and imports.

Indo-US business figures
According to the latest Commerce Ministry data, India’s exports to the US rose by 21.64% to $ 33.53 billion between April-July 2025. At the same time, imports from the US rose 12.33% to $ 17.41 billion during this period. During this period, America remained India’s largest trading partner.

Billionaire investor Mark Mobius said on Thursday that 50 percent of the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on India will have little impact on the country, as India’s domestic market is very big. Talking to the news agency IANS, the legendary investor said that India is not completely dependent on exports like China. Due to this, the country is in a good position to deal with tariffs than other economies.

He further said, ‘India’s domestic market is very large and it is not dependent on exports like China. Apart from this, Indian software exports are also good and it will help protect against tariffs.

Tariff is not a big problem for India- Mobius
Mobius further said to IANS, ‘The summary is that tariff is not a big problem for India.’ Shipments worth more than $ 30 billion related to medicines and some electronic items like smartphones, semiconductor and energy have been excluded from the high tariff list so far from the US. The Trump administration has not yet included these major industries in the new tariff, which are going to be implemented in the next 21 days.

In addition, India has exported drugs and pharmaceuticals worth $ 10.5 billion and $ 14.6 billion as well as electronic products (mostly smartphones) in FY 25 respectively, which is 29 percent of its total exports to the US. Petroleum exports worth $ 4.09 billion in FY 25 are also safe from Trump’s new tariff, as the energy is excluded from the list of high tariffs. India exported $ 86.51 billion to the US in FY 25.

Appreciation of India’s economic growth
According to Mobius, the kind of GDP growth of India will help it to move forward on the path of becoming the third largest economy in the world. Mobius said, ‘Despite global uncertainties, the country is achieving a growth rate of 6-7 percent, which reflects the strength of its economy. This will help India to move forward.

In the last few years, India has become the fourth largest economy from the 11th largest economy in the world. In the case of total GDP (GDP) in 2025, India will be behind only America, China and Germany.

US President Donald Trump has signed a 25 per cent tariff on India on the order. Meanwhile, India has taken a very big decision. According to Bloomberg report, the officials familiar with the case said on the condition of anonymity that India will not buy F-35 stealth fighter aircraft from America. During Modi’s visit to Modi’s White House in February, Trump offered to sell these expensive fighter aircraft to India. However, officials said that the Modi government is more interested in focused on the joint design and construction of defense equipment domestically, but no response has been received from the Ministry of Defense Ministry about the matter yet.

After the US imposition of tariffs, India is considering options to satisfy the US, including promoting American imports. However, India has denied retaliation on President Donald Trump’s 25% tariff’s decision. New Delhi officials on Wednesday (30 July 2025) spoke of shocking and disappointed with Trump’s announcement, as this conversation was private. He said on the condition of anonymity that the government is keen to bring bilateral trade talks back on track and is looking for ways to increase shopping from its biggest business partner.

Emphasis on increasing the purchase of natural gas
According to sources, India is considering increasing the purchase of natural gas from the US and increasing the import of communication and gold. Officials said that promoting these things can help reduce India’s trade surplus with the US in the next three to four years. He told that there is no plan to purchase defense. New Delhi officials are not considering responding immediately to Trump’s tariff threat. The government has already reserved the right to respond to increased American charges on steel and automobiles at the time of its choice in the World Trade Organization.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s statement
India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had expressed confidence of a trade agreement with Washington a few days ago. He told Parliament on Thursday that the government is now interacting with exporters to assess the impact of Trump’s tariff. Amidst the opposition’s vigorous protests, Goyal said, “The effects of the recent developments are being investigated.” He further said that his ministry is collecting feedback from exporters and industry groups and will take all necessary steps to protect and advance our national interests.

US President Donald Trump has announced to impose 25 percent tariff (fee) on India. After this, US Finance Minister Scott Besant said on Thursday, July 31 that the Trump administration is “a little disappointed” from India. Scott Besant said, “India came to negotiate initially, but later slowed down things. So the President and his entire business teams are a bit disappointed with India.” Besant said these things in a conversation with CNBC. He also said that India buys a large amount of banned oil from Russia and reflects it to other countries, which are not being considered a right role globally.

Trump’s charge – India always makes business difficult
Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday (July 30), ‘Remember, India is our friend, but we have done very little business with him over the years, because India’s tariffs are very much. It is the highest in the world and has the most complex and uncomfortable non-monitoring business obstacles. “

Trump also said that “India has always been buying most of its military weapons from Russia and it is the biggest customer to buy energy from Russia with China. All this is happening at a time when the whole world is appealing to Russia to stop murder in Ukraine. All these things are not fine. So India will have to pay 25% tariffs from August 1 and also an additional fine.”

Expect deals from China
Meanwhile, Scott Besant also said that the US and China are close to a trade agreement. He said, “I think we have the possibilities of deal.” However, he admitted that work on some technical points from China remains. I am confident that it will be resolved, but not 100% yet. “

Us tariff impact on india: Amid the ongoing conversation on the trade deal, US President Donald Trump has created a stir in the market on Wednesday by announcing a new rate of 25 percent tariffs on India. These new rates will be applicable from next month, ie August 1. Along with this, Trump, who is trying to stop the Ukraine war, has also said to impose a fine on India due to buying oil from Russia. This news is considered disappointing for Indian exporters exporting to America.

Apart from this, Trump has announced 15 percent tariffs on European Union and Japan, 20 percent on Vietnam, 19 percent on Indonesia and 10 percent on Britain.

What is fear?

In fact, more concern than the tariff imposed by Trump is about potential penalty to Indian businessmen, which has not yet been formally implemented. Its most impact can be on areas like India’s textile industry, carpet, gems and jewelery, and seafood.

According to TOI, M. Rafiq Ahmed, head of Farida Group, a large exporter of shoes, was preparing to travel in the US in the hope of taking new orders, but he hearing the news of the fine, he has started rethinking his plans. He said, “There is an atmosphere of quite uncertainty and this announcement is shocking.”

Why is the atmosphere of doubt?

Vietnam is a major competitor of India’s exporters. In such a situation, 5 percent more tariff on Indian products than Vietnam is a matter of concern for Indian exporters. FIEO Director General Ajay Sahai says that the importers and exporters are not able to fix their costs due to the lack of a clear announcement of the fine by Trump. In this situation, businessmen are unable to understand what they should take the next step.

What is a ray of hope?

However, some expectations are still left due to the ongoing trade deal with the US. Exporters of things like jewelery, textiles, shrimp fish, auto parts, and medicines from India are still in the hope that there can be a positive agreement between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump left for the US on 30 July 2025 from a 4 -day Scotland tour. Meanwhile, he spoke to reporters in Air Force One and answered questions related to tariffs. Speaking especially on questions related to India, he said that India has been a good friend, but he imposes more tariffs on America than in almost any other country. You cannot do this. When asked if it is possible to impose 20% -25% tariff on India? So Trump replied to me. However, he also said that no final decision has been taken so far.

The statement from US President Donald Trump came at a time when talks are going on between India and the US about the trade agreement before the August 1 deadline, but so far no concrete results have been achieved. The Trump administration wants to bring tariff rates to countries around the world under the “Reciprocal Tariffs” i.e. mutual tariff policy. On July 23, Trump also said that America will not keep the tariff less than 15% for any country. They allege that economies like India impose more charges on American products, while the American market is open to them. Under this policy, countries like India are considered to be the United Stating Partner of America, until they cut the tariff.

India is my friend. is not finalized. India has been a good friend, but India has… pic.twitter.com/iyxparzqce

Negotiations between India and America continue
The Government of India is trying to compromise before the deadline of August 1. The Indian delegation led by Rajesh Aggarwal has completed a 5 round of talks in Washington in July. This conversation lasted for four days, but there is no success. Agriculture, automobile, digital business were important in the issue of negotiations. According to PTI, those who participated in the conversation on behalf of the US informed that the next round of talks is likely to be after August, ie after the deadline is over.

What does Indo-US trade stress mean?
The relations between India and the US are strategically strong, but there has been a long tension on the trade front.
The potential impact of Trump’s warning may have in many areas, which is as follows-

Pressure on Indian exporters will increase (especially steel, aluminum, textile fields.

Bilateral differences over IT services and data policy can be deeper.

Strategic partnership such as defense and quad cooperation may be affected.
