India had taken strict action against Pakistan after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. He had also postponed the Indus Water Treaty. This decision of India gave a big blow to Pakistan, the effect of which still remains. For this reason, Pakistan is now seen extending its hand in front of India. Pakistan on Tuesday (May 27) urged India to respect the Indus Water Treaty.

Pakistan said that any attempt to postpone the treaty would set a dangerous precedent for many countries. According to PTI, while addressing a high-level international water conference held in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, Pakistan’s Climate Change and Environment Coordination Minister Dr. Musadiq Malik accused India of politicizing shared water resources.

He said unilateral actions affecting transboundary rivers could create serious global challenges related to water security, food production and tackling climate change. Malik urged India to respect the Indus Water Treaty and follow international arbitration mechanisms. He said any attempt to suspend the treaty would set a dangerous precedent for low-lying countries around the world.

A day after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 last year, India had taken several steps against Pakistan, which also included suspending the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan rejected India’s suspension of the treaty and said any action taken to block water for Pakistan under the agreement would be treated as war.

The Indus Water Treaty, brokered by the World Bank, has governed the distribution and use of the waters of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan since 1960. Malik also mentioned Pakistan’s growing climate challenges and said that Pakistan is also among the countries worst affected by global temperature rise.
