First the threat of attacks on India, then the plea for ceasefire and now the rhetoric regarding Indus Water Treaty – India has exposed Pakistan’s dual policy in the United Nations. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Parvathneni Harish clearly said that until Pakistan leaves the path of terrorism, there will be no relaxation on the Indus Water Treaty.

First threats, then appeal for ceasefire
Speaking at the UN, the Indian representative said that till May 9, Pakistan was threatening to carry out further attacks on India. But on May 10, the situation changed. He said that the Pakistani Army itself called the Indian Army and requested to stop the fighting. Many airbases of Pakistan suffered heavy damage due to India’s action.

‘India cannot accept terrorism as the new normal’
Harish said that Pakistan tries to normalize terrorism, but India will never accept it. He said in clear words that terrorism is not justified in any form and it cannot be allowed to be justified on a platform like the United Nations.

When will Pakistan get Indus water?
The Indian representative bluntly said that India had signed the Indus Water Treaty 65 years ago with good intentions, but Pakistan had repeatedly broken it. He said that until Pakistan completely and permanently ends cross-border terrorism and all types of terrorist activities, the Indus Water Treaty will not be taken forward.
That is, it is clear that terrorism will be curbed, only then the water of Indus will be available.

No right to speak on Jammu and Kashmir
India also made it clear in the UN that Pakistan has no right to speak on India’s internal affairs. Harish said that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and no one can change this truth.

Pakistan exposed in UN
India said that Pakistan’s only agenda is to harm India and its people. On platforms like UN, Pakistan tries to show itself as a victim by making false allegations, but the truth is now in front of the world.

There is fear in the Pakistan government due to India’s action regarding Indus Water Treaty (IWT). The Shehbaz government on Thursday (January 1, 2026) trumpeted that India is not allowed to misuse its limited share of western rivers’ waters under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi made these comments in the weekly press conference while replying to a question related to India’s approval to the 260 MW Dulhasti Hydropower Project Phase-2 located on the Chenab River in Kashmir.

A day after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 last year, India had imposed several punitive measures against Pakistan, including suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). The IWT, formed with the mediation of the World Bank, has been controlling the distribution and use of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan since 1960.

Why is PAK pleading about Indus Water Treaty?

Tahir Hussain Andrabi said, ‘We have seen news related to Indian plans to build Dulhasti Hydropower Project Phase-2 on Chenab River. Obviously, these reports raise serious concerns, as no prior information was shared with Pakistan regarding this project. He also said that Pakistan had sought information from India about the projects it was planning to start.

“The Pakistani Commissioner for Indus Waters has sought clarification from his counterpart in India regarding the nature, scope and technical details of the projects mentioned and also wants to know whether it is a new project or any alteration or addition to an existing plant,” he said.

PAK’s hooliganism regarding the construction of hydropower project

The spokesperson said that under the IWT, India cannot misuse its limited share to unilaterally construct any hydropower project on the western rivers. Andrabi reiterated that the IWT remains a binding international agreement. He said that Pakistan is committed to peaceful resolution of disputes with India, but it will never compromise on its fundamental water rights.

Pakistan has once again appealed to India in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to reinstate the Indus Water Treaty. Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, made baseless allegations against India and described himself as a victim. He alleged that the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty was a unilateral action and said that India was deliberately using it as a weapon.

‘Crisis on millions of Pakistanis’

Pakistani Ambassador Iftikhar Ahmed said, “India’s unilateral decision weakens the basic spirit of the Indus Water Treaty. It has endangered the lives of millions of people who depend on this water for food and energy security. This is not only causing harm to one country, but it is also weakening international water law.”

Iftikhar Ahmed described India’s move as a violation of the treaty that has governed equitable water sharing between the two countries for more than six decades. He said a 1960 treaty brokered by the World Bank allocates six rivers of the Indus Basin between India and Pakistan, giving Pakistan control over the western rivers and India over the eastern rivers.

Pakistan is appealing to the United Nations

After the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India had taken several actions against Pakistan including suspending the Indus Water Treaty. Now Pakistan has realized that it is going to suffer a lot due to this and that is why it starts pleading for reinstatement of this treaty from different forums. The Pakistani ambassador said, “No provision of the treaty allows unilateral suspension or amendment, therefore we expect full respect of the treaty and an early return to normal functioning.”

India Pakistan News: India reminded Pakistan’s boss Pakistan once again. India on Friday (27 June 2025) termed the arbitration court under the Indus Water Treaty illegal and dismissed its jurisdiction. The Court of Arbitration issued a supplemental award, claiming that it had the right to take a decision on Kishanganga and Ratle Dams under the 1960 Indus Water Treaty.

India called Court of Arbitration illegal

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that this so -called court is illegal, as it was formed by violating the Indus Water Treaty of 1960. The ministry said, “India has never accepted its existence or any previous decision. We have never legally recognized this court. Any decision taken by this court is illegal.”

The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that India will not accept any obligation related to this treaty until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism across the border. The ministry said that no court, especially such an illegal court, has the right to review India’s sovereign rights.

‘Pakistan wants to distract attention from terrorism’

The Ministry of External Affairs said, “Pakistan has been identified as a base of terrorism and he resorts to false and misleading actions to divert attention. A gimmick like court of arbitration is part of the same strategy in which Pakistan tries to show itself the victim.”

The purpose of the Indus Water Treaty was to end the dispute by setting conditions of water sharing between the two countries. The Indus river system consists of a total of six rivers, including three Eastern rivers Ravi, Beas, Sutlej and three western rivers Indus, Jhelum, Chenab. Under this agreement, India has got the right to control and use of Eastern rivers, while Pakistan has got control of Western rivers.

Pakistan’s cultivation will affect

About 80 percent of Pakistan’s agricultural irrigation is dependent on the Indus water system. With the ban of India on the Indus Water Agreement, water will not reach water in the Indus River in Pakistan, which will create water crisis and it will directly affect the cultivation there.
