Adopting a tough stance on terrorism, India gave two major blows to Pakistan in recent years. On one hand, action was taken against terrorist hideouts through Operation Sindoor and on the other hand, a decision was taken to postpone the Indus Water Treaty. Since then, anxiety regarding water is increasing in Pakistan.

Due to reduction in the water flow of rivers flowing from India, water crisis has started deepening in many areas of Pakistan. The situation is such that Pakistan is repeatedly trying to raise this issue on international forums. The interesting thing is that the country which does not take any concrete steps on terrorism, is now seen crying out for morality and law. This is the third time on New Year that Pakistan has tried to threaten India. Before this, Asim Munir and Shahbaz Sharif had given anti-India statements twice in the last 4 days.

Pakistan claims there is no basis to suspend the treaty

Pakistan’s Commissioner for Indus Waters, Syed Muhammad Mehar Ali Shah, while giving a statement on January 4, said that India’s claim of suspending the Indus Waters Treaty is not valid under international law. According to him, this treaty is fully in force and it cannot be stopped like this.

India’s tough decision after Pahalgam attack

After the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir in April 2025, India had decided to postpone the Indus Water Treaty. In response, Pakistan called it a war-like action, but India clearly said that blood and water cannot flow together.

Pakistan’s anxiety increased due to Dulhasti project

India has recently approved the 260 MW Dulhasti Phase-II Hydroelectric Project located on the Chenab River. Pakistan is further upset by this decision, because it fears that this will affect its share of water.

Pakistan is citing international law

Speaking in Pakistani channel Geo News’ program Jirga, Syed Mehar Ali Shah said, ‘There is no word like moratorium in international treaty law. According to him, India knows that it can neither abolish nor suspend the treaty, hence such words are being used.

India’s clear message

India has already made it clear that unless Pakistan takes concrete action on terrorism, normality in relations is not possible. Even on the issue of water, India’s stand is clear that national security and the lives of citizens cannot be compromised.

After killing 26 innocent citizens in the terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India decided to postpone the Indus Water Treaty, implemented since 1960. India blamed Pakistan for the attack and then attacked the terrorist bases in Pakistan and PoK under the four -day military operation ‘Operation Sindoor’. One reason for Pakistan’s furore is that under this agreement, it gets water from three major rivers from India. The adjournment of the treaty can have a direct impact on this supply.

China can interfere with Indus Water Treaty

Meanwhile, China has also shown interest in this issue. A report in conversion states that China can interfere with the Indus Water Treaty, which can further increase regional tension. India fears that China may disrupt the flow of rivers flowing from its border to India.

The Chinese media has expressed the possibility of using water as a weapon, describing India as ‘aggressive’. At the same time, China has also announced that it will accelerate the monsoon dam project on the tributary of Indus, which will benefit Pakistan and increase strategic pressure on India.

Many experts in India believe that the conditions of the Indus Water Treaty have been more generous for Pakistan. About 65% of Pakistan’s population lives in the Indus basin, while in India this number is just 14%. In such a situation, this tough stance of India has put Pakistan in a strategically uncomfortable position.

China came forward to help Pakistan

China is now considering itself an important party of the Indus Water Treaty. The Chinese media has warned India as aggressive on this issue that if India uses ‘water as weapons’, it can have serious consequences. Reports also mention that the source of the Indus River is in the western Tibet region of China, which makes the dispute more sensitive. Along with this, China has also announced that it will expedite the construction work of the monsoon hydro project on the tributary of Indus in Pakistan. This step is also considered a diplomatic message for India.

What is Indus Water Agreement

In 1960, India and Pakistan had signed an agreement on the use of water of the Indus Water System rivers. Under this agreement, India can use three Eastern rivers Sutlej, Beas and Ravi river water. At the same time, Pakistan was empowered over the water of Western rivers Jhelum, Chenab and Indus. The thing to note here is that under the Indus Water Agreement, India kept only 20 percent of the water in the agreement with Pakistan. India allowed Pakistan to use 80 percent water to Pakistan instead of peace.

Can the water of all three rivers be stopped overnight

The decision taken by India by suspending the Indus Water Agreement clearly means that India will no longer allow Western rivers i.e. Jhelum, Chenab and Indus river water to use Pakistan, but the question is whether it is so easy? In fact, India does not have this infrastructure recently, so that this water can be prevented from reaching Pakistan overnight. Even if India does this by making dams or storing water, then there may be severe floods in states like Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

So how long will it take to stop water?

If we look at the current conditions, India has planned four projects on all three western rivers. There are two operations in it and two preparations are going on. India has started the Baglihar Dam and Ratle project on Pakistan -part Chenab. Another tributary of Chenab has started the Pakal Dull Project on Marusudar and Kishanganga Project on Jhelum’s Sahayak River Neelam. Out of this, only Baglihar Dam and Kishanganga project are on. In such a situation, if India stops the water of the three rivers of Pakistan, then it is likely to take a lot of time. Actually, India will have to prepare infrastructure to use millions of cusecs of water from these three rivers. Pakistan experts are also doing the same thing. Pakistani leaders say that India cannot stop the water received from the Indus Water Agreement overnight, so they have enough time to fight a legal battle against this decision of India.
