Pakistan claims there is no basis to suspend the treaty

Pakistan’s Commissioner for Indus Waters, Syed Muhammad Mehar Ali Shah, while giving a statement on January 4, said that India’s claim of suspending the Indus Waters Treaty is not valid under international law. According to him, this treaty is fully in force and it cannot be stopped like this.

India’s tough decision after Pahalgam attack

After the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir in April 2025, India had decided to postpone the Indus Water Treaty. In response, Pakistan called it a war-like action, but India clearly said that blood and water cannot flow together.

Pakistan’s anxiety increased due to Dulhasti project

India has recently approved the 260 MW Dulhasti Phase-II Hydroelectric Project located on the Chenab River. Pakistan is further upset by this decision, because it fears that this will affect its share of water.

Speaking in Pakistani channel Geo News’ program Jirga, Syed Mehar Ali Shah said, ‘There is no word like moratorium in international treaty law. According to him, India knows that it can neither abolish nor suspend the treaty, hence such words are being used.

India has already made it clear that unless Pakistan takes concrete action on terrorism, normality in relations is not possible. Even on the issue of water, India’s stand is clear that national security and the lives of citizens cannot be compromised.

Indus water treatment: The people of Pakistan have been stirred up after postponing Indus Water Treaty by the Government of India. Pakistan is dependent on the water of the Indus River for 80 percent of the cultivation. India is going to stop Pakistan’s water under the new Indus project, which is scared of the people there.

According to the Reuters report, since the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, the Sindhu Water Treaty has been expedited by the Chenab, Jhelum and Sindhu rivers under which work was going on. One of the main projects of the region is to double the length of Ranbir Dam on the Chenab River to 120 km. The water of this river goes through India to the agricultural area of ​​Pakistan, Punjab.

According to the report, when India completes its project, it can bend 150 cubic meters per second, whereas only about 40 cubic meters of water is known. Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in the National Assembly that his government has written a letter to India asking him to reconsider the Indus Water Treaty. He told his MPs that this action of India is illegal.

Pakistan will crave electricity with India’s action

David Mitchell, a water security expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Vashington, said that it would take time for India to build dams, canals or other baniyadis. However, he warned the neighboring country that Pakistan has got an idea of ​​what kind of pressure it may have to face from India.

Along with the plan to expand the Ranbir Canal, India is also considering the projects that will reduce the flow of water from the allotted rivers to Pakistan. With this, Pakistan will have to face a lot of problems of making electricity for itself.

India made a list of hydro electric project- report

According to the report, India has created a list of hydro electric projects in the Jammu and Kashmir region, which will increase the power product from 3,360 MW to 12,000 MW. These projects also include dams that can accumulate large amounts of water, which will be the first time for India in the Indus river system.

PM Modi has clearly said that water and blood cannot flow together. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday (May 13, 2025) that India will hold the Indus Water Treaty until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism.
