Due to reduction in the water flow of rivers flowing from India, water crisis has started deepening in many areas of Pakistan. Pakistan claims there is no basis to suspend the treaty

Pakistan’s Commissioner for Indus Waters, Syed Muhammad Mehar Ali Shah, while giving a statement on January 4, said that India’s claim of suspending the Indus Waters Treaty is not valid under international law. According to him, this treaty is fully in force and it cannot be stopped like this.

India’s tough decision after Pahalgam attack

After the terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir in April 2025, India had decided to postpone the Indus Water Treaty. In response, Pakistan called it a war-like action, but India clearly said that blood and water cannot flow together.

Pakistan’s anxiety increased due to Dulhasti project

India has recently approved the 260 MW Dulhasti Phase-II Hydroelectric Project located on the Chenab River. Pakistan is further upset by this decision, because it fears that this will affect its share of water.

Pakistan is citing international law

Speaking in Pakistani channel Geo News’ program Jirga, Syed Mehar Ali Shah said, ‘There is no word like moratorium in international treaty law. According to him, India knows that it can neither abolish nor suspend the treaty, hence such words are being used.

India’s clear message

India has already made it clear that unless Pakistan takes concrete action on terrorism, normality in relations is not possible. Even on the issue of water, India’s stand is clear that national security and the lives of citizens cannot be compromised.

What is Indus Water Treaty

After the India-Pakistan partition, this agreement was reached to meet the water needs of the two countries. The agreement was signed by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan on 19 September 1960. Under this, rules were decided on the use of water of six rivers Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum. Under this agreement, Pakistan receives complete water from three western rivers Chinab, Jhelum and Indus. At the same time, India gets the water of Sutlej, Vyas and Ravi rivers.

Despite the war, India did not stop water

Let me tell you, India, who had fought many war with Pakistan after independence, never broke this agreement nor stopped the water of Pakistan. However, there was a demand to break this water treaty in India for a long time. Now India has finally taken that decision.

Pakistan will crave water

Let me tell you, after the long arbitration of the World Bank, there was a Indus Water Agreement between India and Pakistan. Before the implementation of this agreement, on 1 April 1948, India stopped the water of two major canals, causing the water of 17 lakh acres of Pakistani Punjab. Now after completely canceling this agreement, India has broken Pakistan’s back. In fact, Pakistan’s Punjab and Sindh province were completely dependent on the water of rivers like Chenab, Jhelum and Indus to meet the water needs, but now Pakistan will not get the water of these rivers.
