At least three people were killed and 17 others were injured in protests on Thursday (January 2, 2026) in the city of Ajna in Lorestan province, about 300 kilometers (185 miles) southwest of Tehran, according to Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency. During the protest, people raised slogans of ‘Down with the dictator’. A video viral on social media showed arson on the road. Along with this, the sound of bullets was heard. Fars news agency reported that two people were killed during protests in Chaharmahal, about 470 kilometers south of Tehran, and the city of Lordegan in Bakhtiari province. Some protesters started throwing stones at government buildings in the city. Gen-Z protesters threw stones at the Governor’s Office, Mosque, Martyrs Foundation, Town Hall and bank buildings in the area. The police responded by firing tear gas shells.

According to media reports, the wave of violent protests has reached about 21 states of Iran. This is being described as the biggest protest in Iran after 2022.
