US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that China has promised President Donald Trump that it will not provide “any kind of equipment” to Iran. In an interview given to ‘ABC News’ on Sunday, Greer clarified that the US did not ask China for direct assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. “When the president went, he did not ask them (China) to take action in the Strait of Hormuz,” Greer said on ABC News’ “This Week.” His entire focus was on ensuring that he did not provide any assistance to Iran and this was promised to him (Trump).

Greer said China has a “clear interest” in reopening the strait, but does not want to get directly involved. He said, “The President does not want to conduct joint military operations with China. I don’t think American presidents have ever done that.” He said, ”But obviously, we want to make sure that they don’t come in the way of our efforts…” There was a trade war between the US and China for most of the last year, but while returning to the US, Trump told reporters that the issue of tariffs did not come up in his conversation with Xi Jinping. Greer said trade talks did take place, but not at the level of leaders.

“Before the leaders meet me and people like Finance Minister Scott Besant and our staff members, we meet our counterparts and talk about a range of issues so that the Presidents do not have to focus on them, like I did with my Chinese counterparts and that is why they (Presidents) did not talk about tariffs,” he said. Greer also noted that the US is considering setting up a ‘trade board’ with China to negotiate terms of trade for specific goods.

Responding to critics who say the president’s visit accomplished little, Greer said a fact sheet would be released soon, but he highlighted several points on which he said consensus was reached. He said China has agreed to resume US exports from several meat export hubs, review some biotechnology trades and buy 200 Boeing aircraft, although China has not confirmed details of any agreements. “Many concrete things are happening and the most important thing is our strategic stability with China,” he said.
