Can Hair Dye Cause Liver Damage: When you see hair color changing while sitting in the salon chair, a question definitely comes to your mind that are these chemicals really harmful for the body? Hearing the strong smell and various things, many people think that hair dye can damage the liver. But the reality is a little different. Let us tell you what experts say about this.

What do experts say?

Dr Chetan Kalal, hepatologist and liver transplant physician at Saifee Hospital, told TOI that there is no concrete clinical evidence that routine use of cosmetic hair dyes causes serious liver disease in common people. The reason for this is also simple, most of the dyes available in the market are regulated and their absorption in the body through the scalp is very less. That means these chemicals do not reach the bloodstream in such quantities that they can damage the liver.

What is not the harm?

However, this does not mean that the risk is absolutely zero. There have been reports of liver damage in some cases, especially when chemicals like para-phenylene diamine are present in the dye. But these cases are extremely rare and idiosyncratic, that is, different in every person, without any fixed pattern. These do not depend on the dose, but are based on the individual reaction of the body.

Dr. Harshil S. Shah explains that ingredients like PPD and ammonia can be harmful when they enter the body in large quantities, such as through wounds on the scalp or if the fumes are inhaled excessively during application. Generally it causes skin allergy, which is uncomfortable but not dangerous. The cases in which an association between hair dye and hepatitis was found included those with pre-existing health problems associated with long-term or frequent use.

When does the problem occur?

The real concern increases when several risks are combined together, such as smoking. Smoking itself is a big threat to the liver. It increases oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis, increasing the risk of liver disease, especially if there is a history of fatty liver or alcoholism. In such a situation, when the body comes in contact with chemicals, the overall toxic effect can increase. But Dr. Kalal’s emphasis is clear that quitting smoking is more important for liver health than quitting hair dye.

What is its solution?

So what to do? The best approach is to use with caution. Always choose dyes from trusted and regulated brands. Being labeled ammonia-free or herbal does not mean it is completely safe. These also contain different types of chemicals. Do a patch test every time before use, so that allergies can be detected in advance. Never apply dye on damaged or inflamed scalp.
