The mysterious death of Islamabad Superintendent of Police (SP) Adil Akbar has created a sensation in Pakistan. According to the postmortem report, he died due to a bullet in the head, but no evidence was found that anyone had shot him. According to Islamabad Police, Adeel Akbar died after being shot inside his vehicle while he was going to office from Constitution Avenue.

Formation of a high level team to investigate the death

According to Pakistani media reports, the government has formed a high-level team to investigate the suicide angle. The police have seized the weapon used in this incident. Pakistan’s Minister of State for Home Talal Chaudhary said that a high-level investigation team has been formed under the supervision of Inspector General of Police, Islamabad. He said that according to initial reports, SP Adeel shot himself inside his vehicle. The investigation committee includes DIG Headquarters, DIG Islamabad and DIG Security.

Was transferred from Balochistan to Islamabad

According to IG Islamabad, SP Adeel Akbar shot himself inside his car. He said, “The CCTV footage does not show any external attack. It seems that everything happened inside the vehicle itself.” Adil Akbar was recently transferred from Balochistan to Islamabad. His colleagues, driver and employees present at the time of the incident are also being interrogated.

Another user claimed that Akbar was pressured by the Pakistani army and government to file false cases against pro-Palestinian protesters.

Another user on social media wrote, “Islamabad Police SP Adil Akbar shot himself. He has been admitted to the hospital. He was being pressurized by the Pakistani army and government to fabricate false cases against the pro-Palestinian TLP protesters. Is Pakistan now an ally of Israel?”

A Pakistan court has directed the central government to set up an inquiry commission in 30 days to investigate the alleged misuse of the country’s controversial blasphemy laws. Questions have been raised about blasphemy laws in Pakistan, because in such cases often the crowd targets people regardless of the legal process.

Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan of Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the formation of an inquiry commission on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) to investigate the misuse of these laws. The military ruler Ziaul Haq made these laws more rigid in the 1980s to protect the sanctity of the Prophet and the Quran.

Conspiracy to implicate in blasphemy case

The court passed this order during a hearing on a case related to several complaints of blasphemy. It is alleged that some officers, lawyers and other persons of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) conspired to implicate the innocent people in the blasphemy case and later used it to threaten money by threatening legal action.

It is alleged that those who refused to pay the money, were allegedly prosecuted under the blasphemy laws. In the last few years, many people accused of blasphemy were murdered by religious extremists.

Investigation will have to be completed in four months

This petition was first filed in September last year. The court heard at least 42 times before directing the federal government to set up an inquiry commission. Justice Khan said that the commission will have to complete the investigation in four months. However, if necessary, he can request the court to extend the deadline.

He said that according to data from the think-tank Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), 701 blasphemy cases were registered between 1947 and 2021, including 1,308 men and 107 women, including 1,415 people, were found accused. At least 89 people were killed in these cases, while 30 were injured. Among those killed were 72 men and 17 women.

Rapid growth in blasphemy cases

Statistics show that after the amendments presented by Jiaul Haq in 1986, the cases were rapidly increased when the blasphemy was made a death penalty. Prior to these amendments, only 11 cases were registered and three people were killed.
