According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude was recorded in the Coral Sea early on Sunday. This earthquake was felt at 4:58 am (IST) on 26 October 2025. The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 632 kilometers north-northwest (NNW) of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu.

The depth of the earthquake was only 10 kilometers, so the tremors were quite strong. However, no information about any loss of life or damage has been received so far. The local administration is taking precautionary measures and the area is being monitored.

Why are upper earthquakes considered more dangerous?

According to geology experts, when earthquake waves originate very close to the surface, they cause more vibrations in a shorter distance. Due to this, the intensity of tremors on the ground increases, buildings and structures shake rapidly and the possibility of loss of life and property increases. This time the matter of relief was that the earthquake occurred under the sea, due to which its impact on the populated areas was limited.

Pacific Ocean Seismic Hotspot

The region of the Coral Sea, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands is among the Earth’s most active seismic belts. This area is located between the Pacific Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate. According to scientists, there exists a subduction zone here, where the Indo-Australian plate is sliding beneath the Pacific plate. This process creates continuous seismic stress, which periodically comes out in the form of major earthquakes. According to experts, the Australian continent is moving towards the north-east at the rate of about 6 centimeters per year, while in some places this speed reaches 13 centimeters per year. This is why Vanuatu, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea are considered the most active parts of the global seismic belt.

The tragedy of 2024 is still remembered

The 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Vanuatu in December 2024 caused massive devastation in the region. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, 14 people died in that accident. More than 2,000 people were left homeless and many hospitals and schools were destroyed. Since then, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands have further strengthened their Disaster Preparedness System, so that they can better face future disasters.

There is no danger of tsunami but vigilance continues

According to the International Seismological Center (ISC), this shock did occur in the sea, but its intensity and depth were not enough to cause a tsunami. Nevertheless, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands disaster management agencies (NDMOs) are monitoring possible aftershocks.

Earthquake: On the south of Fiji Islands today i.e. on Monday (April 14, 2025), the tremors of the 6.3 Richter scale intensity were felt in the morning. According to the National Earthquake Science Center, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the depth of 10 km of land.

Due to this earthquake, a stir was also felt in the surrounding areas, but no major damage or damage has been reported so far. There was no danger of tsunami due to the earthquake being in the sea, but this area is part of active seismic activities.

Fiji government’s situation
According to experts, earthquake is normal in this area as it comes under the Pacific Ring of Fire. Fiji government and other local agencies are monitoring the situation together and people have been warned to be vigilant. However, no major threat has been reported from this incident so far.
