ITR Filing: It is necessary for every taxpayer in India to file his Income Tax Return (ITR) on time. For this, the government set a time limit every year. This year, this deadline for non-audit taxpayers is September 15 i.e. today. That is, the taxpayers who do not need to audit their accounts, will have to fill their ITR for FY 2024-25 today.

Now the question comes that what will happen if you miss this deadline? There is often confusion in taxpayers about what will be the results of filing returns after the time limit is exceeded? Today we are going to give you information about this.

Will you be able to file returns after 15 September?

The answer is yes, you can still enter your ITR late, but before doing so you have to understand certain conditions, punishments and restrictions. Of course, taxpayers can file their ITR even after the due date. The Income Tax Department gives this option so that people who have missed the time limit can also get a chance to give information about their income and pay taxes properly. However, there are some disadvantages of late ITR filing.

Fine for filing late returns

If you miss the deadline, you may have to pay a fine under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act.

If your total income is more than Rs 5 lakh, then the fine can be up to Rs 5,000.

If the income is less than Rs 5 lakh, then the fine is Rs 1,000.

This penalty is imposed while filing your delayed returns. In addition to jurma, you will also have to pay interest on the dues. It is imposed under section 234A. Its calculation is usually done at the rate of 1 percent per month from the due date of filing the return and the date of payment.

No discount will be available

One of the biggest disadvantages of filing late returns is that the facility of exemption received also ends. This provision comes under section 139 (1) of the Income Tax Act. If you miss the deadline, you cannot forward the deficit (such as commercial deficit, capital deficit etc.). This means that by adjusting the previous loss, you lose the opportunity to save tax in the coming years.

Deadline to fill late returns

You can file your ITR by December 31, 2025. After this date, you cannot file your ITR for that assessment year at all. That is, you can submit late returns, but too much delay is not appropriate.

ITR Filing Last Date: The central government has given relief to taxpayers by extending the date of this year’s Income Tax Return (ITR) filing. The last date for filing income tax returns (ITR) for the financial year 2024-25 i.e. Assessment Year 2025-26 has been extended from July 31 to September 15 so that taxpayers get longer to get more time to fill the returns without any hassle or hassle and in the last time, there is no need to participate in the last time.

This deadline has been increased due to the delay in issuing Excel-YouTality forms for ITR-1, 2, 3 and 4 forms as many changes were made in these forms this year. Due to this, the backnd system had to be upgraded, utility was re -prepared and data also had to be investigated.

Deadline may increase to file ITR

Overall, you now have only 50 days left to file ITR. In such a situation, to avoid penalty, complete the premature filing and verification processes. However, Excel utilities have not been released for ITR-5, 6 and 7 forms and apart from this, online utility of ITR-3 form is also not live. In such a situation, taxpayers are facing difficulties in filing ITRs. According to the report of Financial Express, experts believe that the Income Tax Department may increase the deadline for some time.

Will the deadline grow again?

According to FT Report, CA (Dr.) Suresh Surana says that no official information has been given for the assessment year 2025-26 to increase the time limit for filing ITR in Form 5, 6 and 7. Due to the delay in issuing online and offline filing for these forms, taxpayers will get less time to file returns.

Apart from this, Excel Utility of ITR-3 form is still available only in Excel format, JSON-based online filing option is still not present. In such a situation, the deadline may be increased for some time. However, nothing can be said about this right now. Earlier, CBDT had extended the deadline due to administrative or technical delays.

If you are employed and the income tax return (ITR) is not yet filled, then there is good news for you. The central government has increased the last date for filing income tax returns by 45 days. Now without audit taxpayers can fill ITR by 15 September 2025. Earlier this date was 31 July 2025.

 Who got the benefit?

This relief is especially for those employed people who usually start filling ITR only after June 15, because till then they get Form 16 from their employees. In such a situation, he had less time to file ITR. With this extension, they will get full time now.

There is no change for those who have an account audit

The thing to note is that no date has been changed for taxpayers whose account audit comes under the purview of audit. Such taxpayers will have to fill their tax audit report by 30 September 2025 and ITR by 31 October 2025.

Why did ITR fileing delay this year in the process?

The process of filing ITR starts every year from 1 April. But this year the government delayed ITR forms and their online facilities. Some structural and technical changes have been made in the forms, which took time to prepare the system. For this reason, the government has extended the date.

TDS credit also received extension due to delay in coming

The government said that TDS Statements will be filed by 31 May 2025 and their credit will be seen in early June. In such a situation, without extensions, taxpayers do not have the right time to fill ITR. That is why a new deadline of 15 September 2025 is given.

late filing or correction of mistake is also fixed

If you miss the last date of 15 September 2025, then you can fill the billet ITR by 31 December 2025. But this can be imposed a penalty of up to Rs 5,000. Apart from this, if you have filled the ITR first and now have to improve it, then the Revise ITR can also be filed by 31 December 2025. If you want more time, then you can fill the ITR (ITR-U) updated by 31 March 2026, but this option comes with some conditions.
