ITR Refund: Taxpayers filed returns in the number of crores till September 16, 2025 to file income tax returns (ITR). Now they are eagerly waiting for the refund. Usually, the refund bank comes to the account within a week of filing returns. Many times it takes 2-3 days to get the refund. But if your refund has not come yet, then before checking the tax refund status, check whether your ITR form has been accepted by the Income Tax Department or the process of processing the refund has started. Many times there is a delay in getting refund due to small mistakes.

Process starts after e-verification

Let us tell you that after the e-verification of income tax return, the process of refund starts. In most cases, the refund is deposited in the bank account of the refund taxpayer in two to four weeks of filing the return. However, if the refund does not come to the bank account within the stipulated time, then checking small mistakes in filing returns, replying to the notice sent by the Income Tax Department or checking the refund status on the income tax e-filing portal may have to be checked. Many times, it may take long to get refund due to high amount.

Many more reasons for delay in refund

If the bank account is not pre-validated, it can delay the refund. It is necessary to prepare the account.

If the name given in the bank account is not matching with PAN card details.

If the IFSC code is not valid.

If the account mentioned in ITR is closed.

If PAN is not link to Aadhaar.

How to check the refund status?

First of all go to the income tax website www.incometax.gov.in and log in from your PAN and password. Keep in mind that the PAN card should be linked to Aadhaar. If this is not the case, then you have to click on the ‘Link Now’ option on the site and link it first.

Now go to the top menu and click on ‘Service’. After this, choose the option of ‘Know Your Refund Status’.

Go to the e-file tab and click on the ‘Income Tax Returns’ tab and select the ‘View Filed Returns’ option.

You will see your refund status on screen.

If you are employed and the income tax return (ITR) is not yet filled, then there is good news for you. The central government has increased the last date for filing income tax returns by 45 days. Now without audit taxpayers can fill ITR by 15 September 2025. Earlier this date was 31 July 2025.

 Who got the benefit?

This relief is especially for those employed people who usually start filling ITR only after June 15, because till then they get Form 16 from their employees. In such a situation, he had less time to file ITR. With this extension, they will get full time now.

There is no change for those who have an account audit

The thing to note is that no date has been changed for taxpayers whose account audit comes under the purview of audit. Such taxpayers will have to fill their tax audit report by 30 September 2025 and ITR by 31 October 2025.

Why did ITR fileing delay this year in the process?

The process of filing ITR starts every year from 1 April. But this year the government delayed ITR forms and their online facilities. Some structural and technical changes have been made in the forms, which took time to prepare the system. For this reason, the government has extended the date.

TDS credit also received extension due to delay in coming

The government said that TDS Statements will be filed by 31 May 2025 and their credit will be seen in early June. In such a situation, without extensions, taxpayers do not have the right time to fill ITR. That is why a new deadline of 15 September 2025 is given.

late filing or correction of mistake is also fixed

If you miss the last date of 15 September 2025, then you can fill the billet ITR by 31 December 2025. But this can be imposed a penalty of up to Rs 5,000. Apart from this, if you have filled the ITR first and now have to improve it, then the Revise ITR can also be filed by 31 December 2025. If you want more time, then you can fill the ITR (ITR-U) updated by 31 March 2026, but this option comes with some conditions.

ITR Filing: The Central Government has extended the time limit of filing it, giving the relief of those who fill the income tax returns. Now the last date for filing ITR for FY 2024-25 (Ay 2025-26) has been extended from 31 July to 15 September. This means that salaried people and those taxpayers, who do not require audit of accounts, will now get 46 days extra time. If the ITR is not filed by the last date, then a fine of up to 5 thousand rupees will be imposed.

ITR increased time limit

The Income Tax Department has given this information about this on social media X (earlier Twitter). It has been said by the department that the deadline of ITR to be deposited by 31 July 2025 has now been extended till 15 September 2025. Such a decision was taken due to major changes in ITR form, showing TDS credit properly and the need to prepare the system. By doing this, the return file will be accurate and easy. Soon an official notification will also be issued by the department.

Kind Attention Taxpayers!

CBDT Has Decided to Extend the Due Date of Filing of Itrs, which are due for filing by 31st July 2025, to 15th September 2025

This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR Forms, System Development Needs, and TDS Credit… pic.twitter.com/mggvjveiop

Seven ITR forms have been issued by the Income Tax Department recently for the Assessment Year 20225-26, in which many major changes have been made. It is taking time to update the system to implement them. Utilities are also being tested. For example, ITR-7 was notified on 11 May for Trust or Charitable Institutions, while ITR-1 and ITR-4 have been notified on April 29 for small and medium taxpayers.

CBDT also informed that all the TDS statement, which will be deposited by 31 May 2025, will all start appearing in early June. Due to this, this time the time can be less in the return file, due to which this step has been taken.

Typically, the ITR forms are notified around February/March before the end of the financial year. However, this time the facility of filing ITR form and documents was delayed as the revenue department officials were busy in the new Income Tax Bill which was introduced in Parliament in February. CBDT said, “To make the experience of filing documents for taxpayers smooth and convenient, it has been decided that the last date for filing ITR which was originally 31 July has been extended to 15 September 2025.”
