Understand the reason for the delay in figures

According to government data, a total of 8,89,20,822 returns have been filed till March 24, 2026. Out of which 8,77,86,233 have been verified. After this 8,50,59,270 have been processed.

This means that about 27 lakh returns are still to be processed. Due to which the refund of many people is stuck and there is a delay in getting their payment. If you too are taking time to get your returns then there could be some reasons behind it.

Reasons for delay in refund

. If the information in your ITR, AIS and Form 26AS does not match, the system stops it for verification. This is also a reason for delay in refund.

. Those who have not completed the e-verification after filing the return, their cases are not taken forward. Hence the refund gets stuck.

. A large number of people fill ITR simultaneously around the last date. Due to which the pressure on the system increases and the processing becomes slow.

. Returns in which multiple types of income, capital gains or refund of higher amounts are included. There is more investigation in those subjects, hence it takes more time.

. If the bank account information is incorrect or is not linked to PAN, there may be a problem in issuing the refund.
