ITR Filing Deadline: Today is the last day to file revised or belated returns for 2025-26. After this you will not be able to make any changes in the income tax return from your side. If you too have made a mistake in filing the income tax return for the amount earned in the financial year 2024-25, then today is the last chance to correct it.

In view of this, in the last few weeks, the Income Tax Department has been sending emails or messages to taxpayers asking them to review their filed returns or correct any mistakes. It is important to do this because the refund may be stuck until the mistakes are corrected.

After today’s deadline is over, the taxpayer will no longer have the option of voluntary revision i.e. making corrections as per his wish. This means that after today you will not be able to claim any deduction or exemption as per your wish. If the department finds any discrepancy in your filed return, now a direct notice will come.

What is revised return?

Many times we make mistakes while filing ITR. Sometimes wrong deductions are claimed and sometimes some income is left out. In such a situation, revised return is a good option to file return after missing the deadline. Revised income tax return allows taxpayers to correct mistakes or deficiencies made in the original return.

CA (Dr) Suresh Surana explains, “If any mistake or deficiency is found after submission, a taxpayer can revise his income tax return. This is allowed under section 139(5) of the Income-Tax Act, 1961.”

He further says that a revised return replaces the original return and becomes a valid return for that assessment year. There is no penalty for filing revised returns, provided it is submitted within the prescribed time limit. However, Surana also says that if the revision results in higher tax liability, the taxpayer will have to pay additional tax along with applicable interest.

The revised return should be filed on or before 31st December of the relevant assessment year, or before the completion of assessment, whichever is earlier. “For assessment year 2025-26, the last date to file revised returns is December 31, 2025,” says Surna. If this deadline is also passed, taxpayers can choose the route of ‘Condonation of Delay’ to claim the refund.

Will the deadline for revised returns be extended?

As the deadline of December 31 approaches, many taxpayers and professionals are appealing to the Income Tax Department to give them some more time to file the revised return. A user has written on

Income Tax Department 24×7 Control Room: Keeping in mind the upcoming Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections of 2025-26, the Income Tax Department has started preparations to keep a close watch on the misuse of money power in the electoral process. Under this, a state-of-the-art control room is being set up in Mumbai, which will be active 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

The objective of this control room is to ensure fair, free and transparent elections after the implementation of the election code of conduct. In particular, activities like illegal documents, unaccounted cash transactions, black money and distribution of money or valuables during election campaign will be strictly monitored.

Income Tax Department Control Room in Mumbai

According to the Income Tax Department, this control room will work as an election surveillance system throughout the election period. Along with this, common citizens will also be made aware that if they get any information about distribution of money, illegal cash, black money or other valuable items during elections, they should immediately share it with the department.

For this, the Income Tax Department has kept its official channels like WhatsApp, Tax Messaging System, phone calls and e-mail active, so that information can be obtained easily and quickly. The department has assured that immediate action will be taken on the basis of solid and reliable information, so that the dignity and transparency of the electoral process is maintained.

Keep an eye on unaccounted cash

The Income Tax Department has also clarified that their main focus during the elections will be on identification and seizure of unaccounted cash. Concern has been raised for a long time regarding such activities in local body elections. Officials believe that the role of the general public is very important in this direction, because many times such activities remain hidden from the common sight, which can be easily identified by the local people. Only through public cooperation can these illegal activities be effectively curbed and the democratic process can be made clean and fair.

Income Tax Refund: Many taxpayers are waiting to receive income tax refund. Taxpayers keep expecting interest due to refund not coming on time. There is a provision for interest on delayed refunds in the Income Tax Act too, but it is not necessary that this happens every time. In many cases, despite getting late refund, taxpayers do not get even a single rupee of interest.

There is a rule to pay interest on late refund

Under Section 244A of the Income Tax Act, interest at the rate of 6 percent per annum is given on delayed refunds. Its calculation is done from 1st April of the assessment year till the day of refund credit. However, there are some situations in which the taxpayer does not get interest despite delay in refund.

In recent times, refund processing has become slow due to various reasons like incorrect bank details, Aadhaar and PAN card not being linked, wrong claim or fake claim in the return or wrong deduction information etc. CBDT Chairman Ravi Aggarwal has said that the tax department is closely investigating the returns containing fake claims and wrong deductions. Due to this, processing is taking more time.

Why is interest not given?

CA (Dr.) Suresh Surana says that just because there is a delay in refund, it is not necessary that the interest will be credited automatically. He says, of course, there is a provision of interest on delayed refund in Section 244A of Income Tax Act, but despite the delay, many times the taxpayer does not get interest. The special thing in this is whether the taxpayers themselves are the reason for the delay in processing. “If the delay in processing or issuing the refund is caused by the taxpayer, no interest is paid,” says Dr Surana.

This especially happens when there is incomplete information in the return or there is a mistake in the details given. In this situation, the assessing officer asks for additional details and when a taxpayer responds late to the notice or queries, the delay is considered to be their own fault and interest is not paid.

This is also the reason for not getting interest

When refund is received from self-assessment tax under section 140A, the interest rules are more stringent. Surana explains, if the refund amount is due to excess payment of tax, then the refund will not be given. This means that if a taxpayer has paid more tax than he wanted and is later claiming a refund, then he will not get interest on that excess amount. Apart from this, if the refund amount is less than Rs 100, then interest is not available on it.

ITR Refund: Several months have passed since the September 16 deadline for filing income tax returns. Still, there are many taxpayers who are still waiting to get their share of refund. Most people have received refunds from the Income Tax Department, but there are still lakhs of taxpayers whose money is still stuck. Due to this delay, people are repeatedly checking status updates or cross checking their submissions. But despite this, leave alone any refund, not even a single message has been received. Many people are worried because of this.

Why is there delay in refund?

Central Board of Direct Taxation Chairman Ravi Aggarwal had informed in November that the department is analyzing some refund claims which have been ‘red-flagged’ by the system due to ‘high-value’ or some deduction claims. He also said that if there is any problem, he has also suggested the tax payers to ‘file a revised return’.

The Income Tax Department starts processing the refund only when the ITR is e-verified. According to the Income Tax Department website, after this step is completed, the refund is usually credited to the account in four to five weeks. If there is a delay in getting the refund, then there are some special reasons for it. For this, first we have to understand why there is a delay in getting the refund?

If there is an error in the bank account, there may be a delay in getting the refund. If the account number or IFSC code mentioned by you is wrong, then there will be problem in receiving the money, hence it is better to pre-validate the account so that the money comes directly into the account.

If your PAN and Aadhar card are not linked together or there is some discrepancy in the name-date of birth, in this situation also there may be a delay in getting the refund. Apart from this, the refund money may also get stuck if the information given in the form does not match the information given in Form 26AS or AIS.

Another major reason for halting of refund is wrong deduction or credit claim in ITR. If you have exaggerated the deduction in 80C and the Income Tax Department somehow gets suspicious about it, your refund may also get stuck. In this situation, the money remains withheld until the correct documents are received from you.

How to check refund status?

First of all go to the income tax portal eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/.

Then go to the e-filing portal homepage and log in to your account using your user-registered ID and password.

After login, click on the ‘e-File’ tab above, then click on ‘Income Tax Returns’ and then ‘View Filed Returns’ or ‘View Filed Returns’ one by one.

Select the correct assessment year and open view details. Here you can check the refund status for the desired year.

4 Deadlines In December: The month of December has started. Being the last month of the year, there are many important tasks that need to be completed this month. That is why it becomes the most useful month for taxpayers. ITR, TDS, advance tax and many other important filings take place in this month. Missing a date brings problems like penalty, interest and late refund.

Therefore, it would be a mistake to take the December deadline lightly. There are four important deadlines looming this December also. Missing them can be heavy on your pocket. Let us tell you about those four top deadlines of this month, if you miss them, you may face problems.

10th December is the most important day for those with audited accounts.

If your business comes under the scope of audit or you are a partner of a firm which is audited. So 10th December is an important date for you. Earlier this deadline was 31 October. But it has been extended to December 10. So that there can be some time to file ITR after audit. Husband and wife covered under Section 5A are also included on this date.

This is the last chance for assessment year 2025-26. Missing this can lead to problems like penalty, interest and notice in future. If the audit report is ready, it is best to file ITR on the same day. Because if there is delay, fine may have to be paid and further filing may also be stopped.

Form, TDS and advance tax till 15th December

Many tax duties fall simultaneously on 15th December. Therefore it is considered to be the busiest day of the tax calendar. Form 27C for the month of November has to be uploaded on this day. Government departments are required to report unchallaned TDS or TCS for November through Form 24G. The third installment of advance tax has to be deposited on this day. Which applies to all individuals, professionals and businesses.

Certificates of TDS deducted in October are also to be issued on this day. Which come under 194IA, 194IB, 194M and 194S. Along with this, stock exchanges have to upload Form 3BB related to client code change. As soon as you miss this date, many things start going wrong like a chain. Therefore, it is important to mark it in the calendar in advance.

TDS and Client Code Statement till 30th December

30th December is also not a light day. Recognized associations have to submit the Client Code Modification Statement for the month of November on this day. Many times, due to delay in this work, the compliance record gets spoiled. It is necessary to submit the challan-cum-statement for TDS of November on this date. So that the entire month can be updated in the system. Leaving this aside can lead to problems like payment errors, credit not appearing or certificate being issued late.

31st December is the last but most important cutoff

The last day of the year is most important in another sense. This is the last date to submit billed or updated ITR for assessment year 2025-26. You can file this return only if the Income Tax Department has not already completed your assessment. If you miss this date, there is no option left except appeal and you may have to face long delay in penalty, interest and refund. Before the end of the year, check whether your filing status is complete or not.

ITR Filling Tips: There is a need to be careful while filing Income Tax Return i.e. ITR. But often people make small mistakes. Ignoring these can prove costly later. Many people think that just by filling the form the work is over. But this does not happen. The Income Tax Department can send a notice for not giving correct information or filling wrong information while filing income tax return.

Things like wrong PAN number, wrong category of ICAN, mistake in tax credit or mistake in section are common. Many times people feel that a mistake of a few rupees will go unnoticed. But now the digital tracking of the tax department has become so strong that even this minor mistake can be caught. Therefore, while filling ITR, it is important to verify every detail correctly and completely. Otherwise notice may come.

Why does the notice come?

Often people think that only those who evade and manipulate taxes receive notices from the Income Tax Office. But if there is a mistake in ITR, the Income Tax Department sends you a notice. Which can usually be seen on e-mail or digital portal. In the notice, it is told where and in which amount the error has been found and time is also given to rectify it.

Also read: Blankets, pillows and sheets will be available in sleeper coaches of trains, passengers will have to pay so much money

Many times this notice is just for information. But in some cases you may also have to pay extra tax or penalty. There is no need to panic when the notice comes. Rather, the mistake should be rectified by carefully looking at the form and bank documents. The process of appeal and correction is also easy on the digital portal. Due to which the matter can be resolved quickly.

What mistakes can be avoided while filling ITR?

While filing Income Tax Return i.e. ITR, first of all check your income, tax credit and PAN information before filling the form. Fill in the sections and deductions correctly, verify bank account details and, if possible, keep a record of digital receipts or slips. Many people do not check TDS or 26AS statement.

Also read: Buying a room heater for the first time? Check these five things beforehand, you will save money and trouble too.

Which becomes the reason for the notice coming later. Another easy way is to take the help of a professional tax consultant or software. Which does automatic verification. By avoiding small mistakes, you can reduce the chances of getting notice to a great extent and will be able to file ITR correctly.

Also read: The refrigerator should be at this distance from the wall, if you want to run it for a long time then know the important things.

If you have not been able to file your Income Tax Return yet, then there is relief news for you! CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes) has extended the last date for ITR filing for the assessment year 2025-26 from 31 October 2025 to 10 December 2025. That means you have got about 40 days of extra time, that too without any penalty. Not only this, for taxpayers who have to submit the Audit Report, the date has also been extended – now you can file the Audit Report till November 10, 2025.

ITR Refund: Taxpayers filed returns in the number of crores till September 16, 2025 to file income tax returns (ITR). Now they are eagerly waiting for the refund. Usually, the refund bank comes to the account within a week of filing returns. Many times it takes 2-3 days to get the refund. But if your refund has not come yet, then before checking the tax refund status, check whether your ITR form has been accepted by the Income Tax Department or the process of processing the refund has started. Many times there is a delay in getting refund due to small mistakes.

Process starts after e-verification

Let us tell you that after the e-verification of income tax return, the process of refund starts. In most cases, the refund is deposited in the bank account of the refund taxpayer in two to four weeks of filing the return. However, if the refund does not come to the bank account within the stipulated time, then checking small mistakes in filing returns, replying to the notice sent by the Income Tax Department or checking the refund status on the income tax e-filing portal may have to be checked. Many times, it may take long to get refund due to high amount.

Many more reasons for delay in refund

If the bank account is not pre-validated, it can delay the refund. It is necessary to prepare the account.

If the name given in the bank account is not matching with PAN card details.

If the IFSC code is not valid.

If the account mentioned in ITR is closed.

If PAN is not link to Aadhaar.

How to check the refund status?

First of all go to the income tax website www.incometax.gov.in and log in from your PAN and password. Keep in mind that the PAN card should be linked to Aadhaar. If this is not the case, then you have to click on the ‘Link Now’ option on the site and link it first.

Now go to the top menu and click on ‘Service’. After this, choose the option of ‘Know Your Refund Status’.

Go to the e-file tab and click on the ‘Income Tax Returns’ tab and select the ‘View Filed Returns’ option.

You will see your refund status on screen.
