Japan has been shaken once again by an earthquake. Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that on Sunday (June 28) morning, a strong earthquake of 6.1 magnitude occurred off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan. The agency has also said that there is no danger of tsunami from this earthquake. According to JMA, the earthquake occurred at 5:21 am at a depth of 41 kilometers.

The earthquake’s maximum intensity, recorded as Lower 5 on Japan’s earthquake intensity scale, was felt in Hachinohe city of Aomori and Fudai village of Iwate Prefecture. Apart from this, tremors of intensity 4 to 1 have been felt from Hokkaido to Kanto-Koshin area.

The meteorological agency said that this earthquake was caused by a reverse fault, whose pressure axis was in the direction from west-north-west to east-south-east. After this incident, no other earthquake of magnitude 1 or more was recorded till 7:00 am. JMA said that this earthquake occurred in the same area where an earthquake occurred near the coast of Iwate on June 25, the intensity of which was measured at 6 plus.

Officials issued warning
Officials warned that people in areas affected by the June 25 earthquake should remain alert for earthquakes of magnitude 6 plus for about a week. The agency also warned that in areas where strong tremors were felt, the risk of rock falls and landslides may increase. People have been asked to remain alert regarding earthquake activities in future also. It was also clarified that this earthquake does not meet the criteria for issuing a warning for subsequent earthquakes off the coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku region.

What did the Japanese PM say?
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said in a post on Twitter that there is no threat of a tsunami and that work is underway to deal with the situation through the Crisis Management Office set up in the Prime Minister’s Office after the June 25 earthquake. Takaichi said he has instructed officials to assess the damage, provide timely and accurate information to the public and take all necessary measures.
