The Modi government has decided to release social activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk, who was arrested over violence in Ladakh. The government has canceled his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) with immediate effect.

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested after the violence in Ladakh a few months ago. The government says that this decision has been taken with the aim of strengthening the environment of peace and stability in Ladakh and carrying forward constructive dialogue with all parties. According to the government, to fulfill this objective and after due deliberations, it has been decided to cancel the custody of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect.

what is the whole matter
On 24 September 2025, a serious law and order situation had arisen due to violence in Leh. According to the government, Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the provisions of NSA on 26 September 2025 under the order issued by the District Magistrate of Leh for the purpose of maintaining law and order. Sonam Wangchuk has spent almost half of the custody period in jail.

The Central Government is actively communicating with various stakeholders and society leaders in Ladakh to address the concerns of the people of the region. However, the current environment of bandhs and protests has proved bad for the society. The protests have caused significant damage to various sections of the community, including students, job seekers, businesses, tourism operators and tourists, and to the economy of Ladakh.

Who is Sonam Wangchuk
Sonam Wangchuk, engineer, educationist and social activist from Ladakh, has been active on issues related to education and environment for a long time. He launched many campaigns in Ladakh regarding education reform and local environmental protection. His character Phunsuk Wangdu in Aamir Khan’s film 3 Idiots was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk. For some time now, he has also been vocal on political and constitutional issues related to Ladakh. Especially for Ladakh, he had organized agitations and demonstrations many times regarding constitutional security, environmental protection and rights of local people.

Places of Worship Act, 1991: A hearing on the Places of Worship Act, 1991 was held in the Supreme Court on Wednesday (18 December). This law has currently become one of the most discussed issues in the country. Let us know what the Place of Worship Act is and what its provisions say.

What does the Places of Worship Act, 1991 say?

According to this law implemented in 1991, a place of worship of any religion built before August 15, 1947 cannot be converted into a place of worship of any other religion. If someone violates this law, he can be fined and jailed for up to three years. This law was brought by the then Congress Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao government when the issue of Babri Masjid and Ayodhya was very hot in the country.

section 2:

Section 2 says that if any petition is pending in the court for changes in any religious place existing on 15 August 1947, it will be closed.

section 3:

According to this section, it is not allowed to convert any religious place completely or partially to any other religion. It has also been ensured that the place of worship of one religion is not changed to another religion or to a different section of the same religion.

Section 4(1):

Section 4(1) says that a place of worship shall have the same character as it had on 15 August 1947.

Section 4(2):

Section 4(2) talks about stopping those suits and legal proceedings which were pending on the date of coming into force of this law.

Section 5:

There is a provision in Section 5 that this Act will not apply to the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case and any case, appeal or proceeding related to it.

What is the motive behind the law?

This law was made at a time when the Ram Mandir movement was at its peak. Due to this, controversies started increasing in other temples and mosques of the country also. To stop this, the then Narasimha Rao government had brought this law.

Penalty

The Places of Worship Act applies equally to everyone. There is a provision of three years in jail and fine for those who violate this.

Voting for general elections is taking place in Bangladesh today (12 February). Regarding this election, Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League said that to save Bangladesh from disintegration, we appeal to the international community that these are sham elections. In the atmosphere of fake poll, there is terror of mob lynching and brutal torture.

Awami League says that these sham elections are not just to oust Awami League, but this fake poll is ousting many such political parties which oppose radical ideology and stand for a liberal country. Lakhs of voters are being threatened with death just for their political views related to Awami League and they are being made victims of riots by the government to intimidate and torture them, due to which they are being forced to vote against their will. This is a well-planned conspiracy to increase voter turnout.

Many journalists and activists were also sent to jail
According to Awami League, the atmosphere of this fake poll is filled with terror of mobs like lynching and brutal torture. The jails are not only filled with Awami League supporters. Along with this, many journalists, activists and anti-war crime campaigners have been put in jail on false murder charges. Before this ridiculous poll, lakhs of minorities have been pushed to the brink of extinction, because they have been given complete freedom for murder and violence by calling them supporters of Awami League. The future of women, who constitute half of the voters, is very bad because in the name of building democracy, they have been kept out of national policy making, which is very bad.

Large number of weapons stolen from police station
Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League says hundreds of police stations in Bangladesh were looted and thousands of weapons stolen from police stations have not yet been recovered, while convicted militants were released from jails even before the election schedule was announced. On the other hand, anti-Awami League organizations including Jamaat-e-Islami have been given free rein to carry out extreme and dangerous violence. In the name of referendum, Yunus government wasted public money and campaigned for ‘yes’ vote, which is a clear indication of deciding the outcome instead of trusting the public’s decision. This referendum, which seeks to end secularism, is a completely unconstitutional act, aimed at erasing the Constitution which was built with the blood of millions of war heroes.

Awami League says that we appeal to foreign observers and all international stakeholders to point out the shortcomings and gross misuses behind this work without any discrimination. Justifying this work by relying on Yunus’ tall talk will push the country into instability for a long time.

Iran has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winner Nargis Mohammadi to more than 7 years in prison after she started a hunger strike. Supporters gave this information on Sunday (February 8). After nationwide protests and the death of thousands of people at the hands of security forces, Tehran is trying to suppress every dissent.

According to the report of APTN News, this decision against Mohammadi has come at a time when Iran is trying to negotiate with America regarding its nuclear program to avert a possible military attack by US President Donald Trump. Iran’s top diplomat insisted on Sunday that Tehran’s strength comes from its ability to say no to great powers. His extremist stance has come to light just after the talks with America in Oman.

What did Mohammadi’s lawyer tell?
Lawyer Mustafa Neeli confirmed the sentencing in a post on X, saying that the verdict was delivered on Saturday by a revolutionary court in Mashhad city. Such courts usually deliver verdicts without giving the accused little or no opportunity to rebut their allegations. He wrote, “He has been sentenced to 6 years on charges of mobilizing people and hatching a conspiracy, and on charges of propaganda, he has been sentenced to one and a half years in prison and a travel ban for 2 years.”

The lawyer said that he has been sentenced to two years of internal exile in the city of Khosf, located about 740 kilometers south-east of the capital Tehran. Mohammadi’s supporters say that Mohammadi is on hunger strike since February 2. He was arrested in December at a ceremony to honor Khasro Alikordi, a 46-year-old Iranian lawyer and human rights activist who lives in Mashhad. Footage of the protest shows them shouting and demanding justice for Alicordi and others.

Released due to medical reasons
Months before his arrest in December, supporters had warned that Mohammadi, 53, was at risk of being sent back to jail in December 2024 after a three-week leave for medical reasons. Although this leave was only for three weeks, the period of Mohammadi’s release from jail was extended. She remained out of jail even during the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June.

Mohammadi continued his activism through protests and international media appearances, including once demonstrating in front of Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, where he was held. Mohammadi was serving a prison sentence of 13 years and 9 months on charges of collusion against state security and propaganda against the Iranian government.

Supported the demonstrations after the death of Mahsa Amini
She also supported the nationwide protests that broke out after the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, in which women openly protested against the government by not wearing hijab. Mohammadi’s supporters say he suffered multiple heart attacks while in prison and underwent emergency surgery in 2022.

Ramesh Chandra Sen, leader of Awami League, the party of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, died in Dinajpur jail on Saturday (February 7). Officials and local reports have confirmed this. Ramesh Chandra Sen was counted among the top minority leaders of the country. He was the Water Resources Minister in Sheikh Hasina’s government.

Sen, a 5-time MP, had won his last election in the year 2024. According to the report of Bangladesh’s leading newspaper Pratham Aalo, Ramesh Chandra Sen was taken to the hospital at around 9.10 am on Saturday morning when his health deteriorated, where doctors declared him dead. Sen’s death has raised questions over the security of senior jailed Awami League leaders and former ministers.

What did the jail superintendent say?
Quoting the Jail Superintendent, the report said that the former minister’s health suddenly deteriorated around 9:00 am on Saturday morning and he became unconscious. He was immediately taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. At 9.30 the doctors declared him dead. 86 year old Ramesh Chandra Sen was suffering from many diseases. According to people having knowledge of the matter, he was not being taken proper care of inside the jail.

Sen did not run away even after the fall of Hasina’s government
Ramesh Chandra Sen was arrested in August 2024 after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government. He was facing three charges including murder. In August 2024, pictures of Sen surfaced on social media, in which his hands were tied with a rope. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, Awami League leaders were fleeing the country to escape the attacks, but Sen chose to stay at home even during this period. He was sure he had done nothing wrong.

People called Sen’s death murder
He was born on 30 April 1940 in Ruhiya Union of Thakurgaon district. He was Water Resources Minister in Sheikh Hasina government from 2009 to 2014. Sen became MP for the first time by winning the by-election in February 1997. Later he became MP in 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024. In Bangladesh, people have raised questions by sharing the death of Ramesh Chandra Sen on social media. Some people have called it custodial murder. At least 5 top Awami League leaders have died after falling ill in custody.

A big revelation has come to light regarding former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is jailed in Pakistan. According to Pakistani media reports, Imran Khan was secretly brought from jail to the hospital, where he was medically examined. Pakistani journalist Zahid Gishkori told that Imran Khan was shifted from Adiala jail to Islamabad hospital on the night of 24-25 January.

what happened to imran khan
According to Pakistani journalist, Imran Khan has been kept in the eye department. After this matter came to light, leaders of Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have expressed concerns. Zahid Gishkori told that when Imran Khan was brought out of jail, the lights of his cell and the route through which he was brought out were switched off.

Zahid Gishkori told that even in the hospital, Imran Khan’s presence was kept completely confidential and all the lights remained switched off. After reaching the hospital, his eyes were examined. Khan was sent back to Adiala jail after being kept in the hospital for about 2.25 hours.

PTI leaders expressed concern
Regarding this matter, on Wednesday (January 28), senior PTI leaders held a press conference and accused the government that Imran Khan was taken to the hospital for treatment without informing the family or the party leadership. PTI Chairman Gauhar Ali Khan said that his last meeting with Imran Khan was on December 20. Since then, party officials and family members have not been allowed to meet him.

Gauhar Khan said that her family should have been taken into confidence before being taken for medical treatment. He further said, ‘Till date we have not been told about the illness for which he was taken to the hospital. Which doctor examined him or why was he brought back to jail.

A shocking case has come to light from China, where a court in Southern China sentenced a woman to imprisonment. The woman is accused of accidentally killing her daughter while performing an exorcism ritual.

According to a report by South China Morning Post, the court of Shenzhen in Guangdong province in July sentenced a woman named Li to 3 years in prison, which was later suspended for 4 years. The woman’s elder daughter was also sentenced. The court had given this decision in July on the charge of murder by negligence.

Prosecutors said Lee and her two daughters were influenced by superstitious beliefs about hauntings. They believed that demons were attacking them and that their souls had been sold. In December last year, his younger daughter suddenly said that she was possessed by a demon and appealed to her mother and sister to perform an exorcism.

what is the matter
During the exorcism ritual, both of them put pressure on the girl’s chest and poured water down her throat to induce vomiting. The victim’s daughter found some benefit from this and asked her family members to continue doing it. The next morning other family members saw blood flowing from his mouth and called the police. Doctors declared him dead on the spot.

What did the court say in its decision
The court ruled that the mother and sister had no intention of killing and thought they were helping, yet their actions resulted in their daughter’s death, which amounts to negligence.

Various reactions were seen on social media in China regarding this matter. People demanded better science education and increased public awareness to combat superstitions. One person said that cult followers are generally stubborn. Instead of accepting the reality, they believe that the demon was very powerful.

Many countries of the world are struggling with crime, terrorism, starvation and economic crisis, but there is one country on this earth where there is almost no trace of crime. It sounds strange, but the Netherlands is actually a country in Europe where prisons remain empty and the government has to face new problems due to shortage of prisoners.

In the Netherlands, crime continued to decline over the past decade and this decline was so rapid that many prisons had to be closed. In the jails which had prisoners till 2013, by 2018 such a time came that in many jails there was not even a single criminal left. According to a report published by Telegraph UK in 2016, the Dutch Ministry of Justice had estimated that crime would decrease by about one percent every year and this estimate turned into reality. The country’s social system, people’s standard of living and reformist thinking towards criminals are considered to be the major contributors behind the reduction in crime.

If the jails become vacant then the government will face new problems

The closure of jails had a direct impact on the jail staff. Out of about two thousand employees, only a few people could be adjusted in other government jobs. The situation became so unique that to keep the prisons running, the Netherlands made an agreement in 2017 to import prisoners from Norway. This was a rare case of its kind in the world, where a country had to face the shortage of prisoners.

Why are there less prisoners? What is special in the Netherlands model?

The Netherlands paid more attention to reforming criminals rather than merely punishing them. The most effective solution for this was the electronic ankle monitor system. It is a small device, which is worn on the ankle and it keeps sending the location of the person to the police. If the person goes beyond any prescribed limit, an immediate warning is received. This technology greatly reduced the chances of repeating the crime. Apart from this, criminals are given facilities for education, training and work so that they can return to normal life. Due to this, crowding in jails does not increase and the society also remains safe.

Today there are less prisoners in the jails of Netherlands, more foreigners

The current situation is that in most of the jails of the country, there are very few prisoners and most of them are those who are serving sentences in cases related to other countries. It has now become very rare for crimes to be registered among the local people. This is the reason why many jails remain more than half empty.

Why the Netherlands model is an example for the world

Netherlands has shown that crime can be eliminated not only by strict laws, but also by social reforms and humanitarian approach. Here the police makes better use of technology, the administration is transparent and citizens get such facilities which automatically reduce the chances of crime.

For the last 4 weeks, questions have been raised continuously about the health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, lodged in Pakistan’s Adiala Jail since August 2023, as to what is the reason why the Pakistani government is not allowing Imran Khan to meet his family. Amidst all this, ABP News has got hold of some photographs of the barrack in which Imran Khan lives in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail and the facilities provided to him, which were filed in the Supreme Court by the Central Government of Pakistan last year.

This picture is of the small dungeon inside which Imran Khan has been living for 2 years and 3 months. In the barrack, there is a single bed for Imran Khan to sleep with an attached washroom, there is a wash basin near him for washing hands. Also, in this small barrack, there is a provision of cooler, TV along with 1 chair and 2 tables for Imran Khan.

Pakistan government had given information in the Supreme Court
Apart from this, there is also an exclusive gallery for Imran Khan in the jail where he is allowed to walk twice a day and there is also a small kitchen for Imran Khan alone in which food is prepared as per his wish. On June 6 last year, the government of Pakistan had shared pictures in the Supreme Court and given details of the facilities provided to Imran Khan, according to which Imran Khan has been given books to read in jail and there is also a bookshelf in the small room where Imran Khan lives.

Imran Khan is no longer being allowed to meet his sisters
Imran Khan has also been given an exercise bike and stretching belt for exercising in jail, so that Imran Khan remains healthy. Imran Khan, lodged in Adiala jail since August 2023, was allowed to meet his sisters every week, but for the last 4 weeks, Imran Khan has been suddenly stopped from meeting his sisters or other family members.

A big reason for this is that Imran Khan used to give his message to his supporters in Pakistan through sisters and was continuously criticizing Asim Munir after he became Field Marshal. In such a situation, Imran Khan’s message against Asim Munir could not reach Pakistan and Imran Khan could be silenced by harassing him. For this reason, despite the order of Islamabad High Court, Imran Khan is being prevented from meeting his sisters.

National President of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Maulana Arshad Madani has given a big statement on the controversy related to Al-Falah University and the situation of Muslims in the country. He says that the current situation is such that it has become almost impossible for a Muslim Vice Chancellor to become a vice chancellor in any university in India and even if one does become one, his outcome will be the same as what happened to socialist leader Azam Khan – jail.

Maulana Madani was speaking at a seminar organized in Delhi, which focused on the life and legacy of Mufti Kifayatullah Dehlvi, one of the founders of Jamiat. During his address, he raised the issue of the controversy related to Al-Falah University and its owner and said that the system does not want to allow Muslims to progress.

Madani said this big thing

In his address, Maulana Madani said, “The owner of Al-Falah University is lying in jail. No one knows for how long he will remain in jail. What kind of justice system is this that someone should be kept in jail continuously when the case has not even been fully proven yet.” He further said that even after 75 years of independence, Muslims are being prevented from progressing in education, leadership and administrative structures.

Giving global examples, Madani said that Muslims are holding big responsibilities across the world, he said, “Today a Muslim Mamdani can become the Mayor of New York. Sadiq Khan can become the Mayor of London, but a Muslim cannot become the Vice Chancellor of any university in India and if he does, he will go to jail like Azam Khan.” His statement is being seen in the context of Al-Falah University, where several legal investigations and arrest cases have come to light recently.

‘Governments want Muslims not to be able to raise their heads’- Madani’s allegation

Maulana Madani said, “Since independence, the governments have been trying to weaken the Muslims. The governments want the land to be taken away from the feet of the Muslims and it has been taken away to a large extent. Today the morale of the Muslims has been shattered.” He said that the allegation of lack of leadership among Muslims is wrong. If Muslims can become mayors in big cities of the world, then why are leadership not being allowed to emerge in India?
