Jamia was established in 1920

Jamia Millia Islamia was established on 9 October 1920. This university emerged as a protest against the education system started during the British rule. It started in Aligarh, when some teachers and students boycotted the colonial education system and laid the foundation of a new institution. Many prominent freedom fighters contributed behind this institute, which include names like Mohammad Ali Johar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Zakir Hussain, Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari and Abdul Majeed Khawaja.

History is also related to Gandhiji’s movement

The establishment of Jamia is directly linked to the non-cooperation movement and the Khilafat movement. Mahatma Gandhi had called for boycott of British institutions in 1920. After which the foundation of this university was laid. A few years after its establishment, in 1925, Jamia was shifted from Aligarh to Delhi. In the initial phase, this institute struggled with financial crisis, but with the support of Gandhiji and other supporters, it was taken forward.

Today it is counted among the top institutions of the country.

With time, Jamia Millia Islamia established its strong identity in the field of education. Today it is counted among the major central universities of the country and has also made its place in various national and international rankings. There are more than 40 departments here and many courses are run.
