On the one hand, development plans are being made in the litigants of Jammu and Kashmir, on the other hand the lack of employment opportunities for the youth is becoming a matter of concern. According to the latest data, more than 32,000 government posts in the state have been lying vacant for years, while millions of youth have been wandering in search of jobs.

In response to the question of CPI (M) MLA Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah revealed that a total of 32,474 posts are vacant in the state. Of these, 2,503 gazetted, 19,214 non-gazetted and 10,757 multi-tasking (class-IV) posts are included. These figures not only point to the growing unemployment in the state, but also raise questions on the sluggish recruitment process of government system.

The maximum number of 7,851 posts in the Department of Health and Medical Education are vacant, while 3,759 posts in Public Works Department and 2,589 posts in Animal Husbandry Department are vacant. Similarly, thousands of posts are lying vacant in other departments like industry and commerce, housing, agriculture, electricity, food, finance and education. The interesting thing is that only the disaster management department is where no post is vacant.
