A case of playing wearing helmets with Palestine flag during a private cricket tournament in Jammu has come to light, after which Jammu Police has sought answers from the players and organizers concerned. The incident took place in a Jammu and Kashmir Champions League match, where player Furkan Bhat was found at the center of the controversy.

After the pictures and videos of the case surfaced, the police took cognizance and started the process of clarification on January 1. An uproar has started after the video surfaced on social media.

According to sources, during a match of Jammu and Kashmir Champions League held in Jammu, a player named Furkan Bhat was allegedly seen batting with a helmet carrying the Palestinian flag. The pictures and videos taken during the match went viral on social media, after which the matter came into discussion. After this, Jammu Police took suo motu cognizance and sought clarification from the player regarding the use of this symbol.

Questions raised on the validity of the league

Amidst this entire controversy, Brigadier Anil Gupta (retired), administrative member of Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, has raised questions on the validity of the league. He clarified that the matches running under Jammu and Kashmir Champions League are neither recognized by BCCI nor JKCA. According to the statement given to IANS, official cricket laws do not apply to such unauthorized and unapproved tournaments. He also said that a player is allowed to wear on his helmet only the logo or emblem of the board or association he is officially representing.

Organizers’ responsibilities and future situation

Brigadier Anil Gupta also said that if Zaheed Bhat is the organizer of this league, then it is his responsibility to conduct the tournament in a peaceful and controlled manner. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and Jammu and Kashmir MLA Waheed Para has accused the government led by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of showing no interest in resolving the reservation issue. Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered immediate investigation into reports of sale of adulterated eggs in the markets. National Conference MLA Tanveer Sadiq had said that the eggs consumed in the entire area contain residues of cancer causing drugs. In a formal communication issued by the Personal Section of the Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA), the department has directed the concerned authorities to immediately investigate/verify the matter and submit a report within two days, amid growing public health concerns.

This directive comes after Sadiq warned that the drugs containing residues of nitrofuran and nitroimidazole are banned in food animals due to their cancer-causing and toxic properties. MLA requested the Health Minister

The MLA urged both the Health Minister and the FCS&CA Minister to immediately test the leftovers in all markets, identify the supply chain from where such eggs have come to the Valley, and initiate strict legal action against rule violators. Acting on the alert, the FCS&CA Minister tasked the Legal Metrology Department to verify the claims and submit its results as soon as possible.

The investigation is expected to include market inspection, sample collection, lab testing and tracing the distribution network. Officials said that if the presence of banned items is confirmed then strict action will be taken.

A major decision has come in the case of 2016 attack on security forces in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. The District and Sessions Court has sentenced Pakistani terrorist Hanzallah Yasin Rai alias Abu Ukasa to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The court said that the accused had openly and clearly admitted to the attack and no security personnel were injured in the attack, hence this punishment is appropriate.

The accused himself confessed to being involved in the attack

Ukasa, a resident of Bahawalpur, Pakistan, told the court that he was involved in the attack on security forces in 2016. The court held that his confession was voluntary and he did not try to hide his role in the incident.

Judge Manjit Singh Manhas said that no member of the patrol team was injured and the case did not fall in the “extremely serious category” of attempt to murder, so he did not see the need for a harsher punishment like life imprisonment.

The court has sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment under Section 7/25 of the Arms Act along with attempt to murder and 5 years’ imprisonment under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act. But the relief is that all three sentences will run together.

Ukasa has been in custody since June 20, 2016, so according to the court, his release is possible in the middle of next year i.e. around 2026.

One month more imprisonment for not paying fine of Rs 20,000

The court has also imposed a total fine of Rs 20,000 for all three offences. If Ukasa does not pay this amount, he will have to undergo additional imprisonment of one month.

The judge ordered that after completing the sentence, the convict will be handed over to the concerned department for action under the Foreigners Act 1946. This also includes repatriation to his home country Pakistan.

The court said in its order that the crimes are certainly serious, but considering the circumstances, it is not appropriate to give life imprisonment to the accused. The court found relief from his long stay in jail, his confession and the fact that no one was hurt.

This decision is being considered an important step forward in the judicial process on old security related matters in Kupwara.
