A massive avalanche occurred in Sonmarg, a famous tourist destination of Jammu and Kashmir, late on Tuesday night (27 January 2026), causing chaos in the entire area. It is a matter of relief that according to the administration, no casualties have been reported so far in this incident. This avalanche has happened at a time when Kashmir Valley is in the grip of continuous heavy snowfall and life is already badly affected.

This incident took place in Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir at around 10:12 pm. The scenes recorded in the CCTV cameras installed in the area are extremely scary, in which a huge wall of snow coming down from the mountain is seen covering many buildings within a few seconds. After the video surfaced, panic spread among the local people and tourists.

How did the avalanche happen, what is the reason?

According to officials, due to continuous heavy snowfall, the snow accumulated on the mountains had become unstable, which suddenly slipped and came down. Sonamarg is situated at an altitude of about 2,700 meters and is considered a very sensitive area for avalanches during the winter season. It can be clearly seen in the CCTV footage that the flood of snow came down rapidly and completely engulfed some structures. However, the buildings which were damaged were either vacant or had already been evacuated by the administration as a precautionary measure, due to which major damage was averted.

Situation worsened in Kashmir due to heavy snowfall

Due to heavy snowfall in Kashmir that started on Monday night, roads have been closed, power supply has been disrupted and normal life has come to a standstill. Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), which is the main route connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, has been closed due to snow accumulation. The situation in Navyug Tunnel and Banihal sector near Qazigund is said to be the worst. Due to this, hundreds of vehicles are stuck, including trucks loaded with essential commodities.

All flights canceled at Srinagar airport

The weather has also affected air traffic. All 58 flights were canceled at Srinagar International Airport, including 29 arrivals and 29 departures. Operation of flights had become unsafe due to heavy snow accumulation on the runway and low visibility. Due to this, hundreds of tourists are stuck in airports and hotels. The local administration and hotel associations are busy providing assistance to the tourists.

Avalanche warning issued in 11 districts

Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKUTDMA) has issued an avalanche warning in 11 districts in view of the severity of the weather. High Danger warning has been issued for areas at a height of more than 2,000 meters in Ganderbal district, which also includes Sonamarg. Anantnag, Bandipora, Baramulla, Kulgam, Kupwara, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri and Medium danger alert has been issued in Ramban districts.

Due to heavy rains, there has been a lot of loss of life and property in many parts of India, China and Pakistan. While floods caused havoc due to heavy rains in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, more than 300 people died, there was a loss of millions of crores in China. Apart from this, the situation has deteriorated from Jammu and Kashmir to Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in India.

Transport has come to a standstill due to the rise in the water level of the Ganges river and there has been a flood situation in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. At the same time, Tawi, Chenab and Basantar rivers are flowing above the red alert, which has flooded the low -lying areas of Jammu.

At the same time, floods including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Punjab of Pakistan have greatly affected people. Heavy rains in China have affected both home and earnings. Due to torrential rains of two months, there has been a loss of Rs 1.84 lakh crore.

Although every year floods in these areas are easy to flood, but this time the pattern of rain has changed in these areas. Due to rising temperature, the direction of the monsoon has slipped towards the south, due to which areas like Rajasthan and Gujarat are receiving more rainfall than in the northeastern states.

This year’s rains have caused more havoc in Pakistan than the previous rains and the rescue operation is still going on. Due to moving from high-pressure areas of the winds towards low-pressure areas, the affected areas are receiving more rainfall.
