The festival of Janmashtami is considered very special in Hinduism. This year Janmashtami is on 16 August 2025. Kanha’s birthday is celebrated with pomp on the holy day of Janmashtami. During this time, Kanha is specially adorned, 56 bhogs are offered, Maharati is done and bhajan-kirtans are held at night.

On Janmashtami, people keep fast from morning to night, because Janmashti is worshiped at 12 o’clock in the night. Fasting is not taken from morning to night. Therefore, this fast becomes a little difficult.

These women are allowed not to keep fast- If you are pregnant or are breastfeeding mothers, then you can get the blessings of Krishna only through worship recitation without fasting on Janmashtami. Because staying hungry for a long time in this state can be harmful for you and the child.

The sick and the elderly are also allowed not to fast- people who are suffering from diabetes, blood pressure, liver, kidney, heart disease or fever etc., do not keep Janmashtami fast. Along with this, old people are also allowed not to keep fast.

Along with this, very young children should not keep fast. Women who have a period, do not fast.

People who have died at their home and are going on a fasting of Janmashtami nor should they worship. Because at such a time one should stay away from religious works.
