Great Nicobar Project: Amidst the growing controversy over the Great Nicobar Project, the Central Government on Friday issued a detailed clarification and made it clear that this project is very important for India strategically, defense and economically. The government said that this project is being taken forward while striking a balance between development, environmental protection and the interest of tribal communities.

Government’s clarification, answer given through FAQ

The government issued this clarification in the form of FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). This move came at a time when Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had raised questions on this Rs 81,000 crore project, calling it a threat to the environment and tribal communities. The government rejected these allegations and said that this project has been started after thorough investigation and thinking.

India’s strength will increase in Andaman Sea

According to the government, the Great Nicobar Project will strengthen India’s strategic presence in the Andaman Sea and South-East Asia. This will significantly increase the country’s maritime and defense capabilities. The island will also be connected to the global trade and logistics network, which will also boost economic activities. There is also a plan to build a large international transshipment terminal under this project.

Complete assessment of environmental impact

The government clarified that the potential environmental impacts of the project have been identified and detailed assessments have been conducted. To control these impacts, a strong Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process is being adopted, so that along with development, protection of the environment can also be ensured.

Safety of tribal communities comes first

The government stressed that the interests of tribal communities have been kept in mind in this project. All legal procedures and security measures have been followed. Under Jarawa Policy 2004 and Shompen Policy 2015, advice has been taken from experts and concerned officials. The Empowered Committee has ensured that the project does not have any negative impact on Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). The government also said that the project has received ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Along with this, the Forest Rights Act 2006 has also been fully followed.
