The country’s first general elections were held in the year 1951-52. The Indian National Congress (INC) had captured 364 seats out of 489 and its vote share was about 45%. This was the period when a single party was in power over the entire country. But today, after 70 years, the same Congress is limited to the government of only four states. Is this 140-year-old party, which once decided the direction and condition of the country, now counting its last breaths or is it waiting for a new beginning?

Congress reached every village by winning more than 400 seats

Congress prepared its political ground through powerful leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The party held power at the Center for more than 50 years between 1952 and 2014. In the 1984 elections, Congress had got a record of more than 400 seats. This was the time when Congress’s support base extended from Hindu-dominated society to minorities and deprived classes. The organization of the party was strong from village to village and a complete system was running under the name ‘Congress System’.

When and how did the disintegration of Congress begin?

Experts believe that the real decline of Congress began after 1989, when it lost absolute majority power at the Center and had to depend on coalition politics. Allegations of corruption, internal factionalism in the organization and the rise of regional parties started hollowing out the roots of the party. Then in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress was overthrown and it was reduced to only 44 seats, while its vote share was reduced to 19.3%. After slight improvement in 2019, the party secured 99 seats and 21.26% vote share in 2024, but still proved to be dwarf in front of the Modi wave.

Current reality: Government of only 4 states

If we look at the latest situation of 2026, Congress currently has its government in only four states. After a big victory in Kerala in the 2026 assembly elections, the Congress is now in power in three southern states – Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala, apart from only Himachal Pradesh in North India. In Jharkhand, it is part of the government in alliance with JMM, but the leadership there is with Hemant Soren.

In states like Bihar and Tamil Nadu, the party is either playing the role of a minor ally or is completely marginalized. At the same time, in states like Delhi, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Assam, Congress’s support base has either ended or is very weak.

What are the five big reasons for the decline of Congress?

The decline of Congress cannot be explained by one or two reasons, there is a well-planned political process behind it:

Weak leadership and organizational discord: Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the party has faced more than 95 electoral defeats. Internal factionalism and disconnection of the high command from ground reality is continuously weakening the party.

Crisis of ideology: BJP projected Congress as a politician of ‘Muslim appeasement’, which shook the confidence of Hindu majority voters.

Rise and polarization of BJP: Since 2014, Congress has not won an outright victory in any contest in North India because BJP has been successful in polarizing on religious lines.

Process of defection and leaving the party: After 2014, hundreds of leaders and workers left Congress and joined BJP or other parties. This trend was at its peak between 2017 and 2021.

Distrust in coalition politics: The allies of the India alliance, be it the Trinamool Congress or the Aam Aadmi Party, are not ready to accept the national leadership of the Congress, which has weakened the opposition unity.

So is the Congress Party going to end?

The answer to this question is not easy. However, the India alliance is limited to only 6 states and one union territory and many BJP leaders are calling it ‘non-existent outside Kerala’. Despite this, it is difficult to make predictions in politics. The 99 seats won in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections definitely proved that the party still has the strength to fight. The growing influence of the party in South India and movements like ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ have energized the workers.

But the future of the party will depend on how quickly it overcomes its weaknesses. Congress will have to build a strong organization, rework the caste and regional equations and set a clear ideological direction. These are the challenges that the party will have to overcome. If Congress fails to do this, then its story in the history books will be limited to a ‘golden past’.

India’s Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan gave a statement on India-China relations on Friday (February 13, 2026). He explained why the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru wanted the Panchsheel Agreement of 1954 with China, which included India recognizing Tibet as a part of China.

CDS Anil Chauhan said that after India’s independence, the British left and it was for India to decide where the border was. General Chauhan said, ‘Nehru probably knew that in the past we had some claim in the form of McMahon Line and we also had some claim in the Ladakh region, but not here. That’s why perhaps they wanted to move ahead for the Panchsheel agreement.

After Panchsheel, we agreed that the dispute on the northern border has been resolved: CDS

He said, ‘The Chinese also thought the same. When the Chinese virtually liberated Tibet, they entered Lhasa. They entered Xinjiang. This particular area was extremely dangerous at both ends.

General Chauhan said, ‘Therefore this area was given priority in some form or the other. They probably wanted stability in this particular area. Independent India was eager to build good relations with China. In 1954, India recognized Tibet as part of China. Both the countries signed the Panchsheel agreement.

CDS Chauhan said, ‘With this, India had assumed that it had resolved its border, the northern border, the only area which we had not been able to resolve through a formal treaty.’

General told the difference between border and borders

CDS was giving a speech at the Bharat Himalayan Strategy Forum organized at Lok Bhawan, Dehradun, in which he focused on the boundaries, borders and the historical connectivity of the central region. Clarifying the difference between borders and frontiers, General Chauhan said that while borders are clearly defined political and legal boundaries between countries, frontiers are the rugged and customs-related areas between civilizations.

He said, ‘Borders are divided by a line on a particular map as well as on the ground, whereas a frontier is an area or area which is extensive and comprehensive in nature. Border is a concept that separates two nation-states, while frontier is the meeting point of two civilizations. Borders define the political and legal boundaries of a nation.

Uttarakhand is adjacent to the border of China, we forget: CDS

General Chauhan said, ‘Uttarakhand is a border state. Sometimes we forget this aspect because the border here is more peaceful than Ladakh, Sikkim or Arunachal Pradesh, but I think most of us forget that the root of the initial dispute between us and China on the border was here. This was before and immediately after the signing of the Panchsheel Agreement. Therefore this border is as important as other borders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on the motion of thanks on the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha strongly targeted the Congress. He said that Congress is not able to digest how Modi has reached the post of Prime Minister. Congress calls itself a shop of love. Now the love shop owners talk about digging my grave. Digging graves is not their slogan but their sentiment.

Why does Congress want to dig PM Modi’s grave?

PM Modi said that we are preparing the ground for developed India. Congress is organizing programs to dig the grave of Modi. Those opening love shops are raising slogans of ‘Modi will dig your grave’. What kind of shop of love is this, which talks about digging the grave of a citizen of the country? Is this not an insult to the Constitution? PM Modi has given 7 big reasons for this:

Nehru ji had done injustice to the country. He had made a big mistake by signing the Indus Water Treaty. We put that agreement into oblivion, that is why you raise slogans of digging Modi’s grave.

Congress’s problem is something else. They are not able to digest how Modi reached here and how can Modi survive after reaching here, hence they feel that the only way out is that Modi will dig your grave.

Congress never encouraged startup culture. They are not able to fix even their home startup. Today our government supported more than 2 lakh startups. But they have only one way, Modi will dig your grave.

Earlier there used to be repeated news in the country that the Army does not have ammunition or bullet proof jackets. Don’t even have shoes to stand in the snow. We opened the coffers for the soldiers of the country. Therefore, they have no option left and want to dig Modi’s grave.

Congress feels that the Prime Minister’s chair is their property. Congress is worried about how Modi has reached here. Nehru had done a lot of injustice to the country, we rectified it. We demolished wall 370, so want to dig a grave.

We brought peace to the North East and Pakistani terrorists respond by entering our homes, so they want to dig my grave.

We do Operation Sindoor, which causes them trouble, so they dig Modi’s grave. Take steps to deal with Maoist terrorism.

I have been abused in the House for 25 years: PM Modi

PM Modi said that even after this he will give a statement, see the Prime Minister was crying in the Rajya Sabha also. For the last 25 years, there has not been a single session of Parliament in which Modi was not abused in this Parliament. Someone had asked me the secret of my health, I had said that I abuse two kilograms. Why do they want to dig Modi’s grave? This is not a slogan, it is a reflection of the hatred within them.

Those who consider themselves kings speak on economic inequality: PM Modi

PM Modi said, ‘From the discussion I saw, I feel that its level should have been higher. Congress has spent many years in the government, they should have ensured high level debate, but they missed this opportunity also. How can the country trust such people? Yesterday, I was listening to an honorable member who takes great pride in calling himself ‘King’. But tell me, when someone who considers himself a king speaks about economic inequality, one is forced to think whether we are really forced to see such days?

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on the death anniversary today, Monday (December 15, 2025). In a program organized in Lucknow, CM Yogi said that the present form of India is the contribution of Sardar Patel. He held Jawaharlal Nehru responsible for the Kashmir dispute.

CM Yogi said in the program organized on the death anniversary of Sardar Patel in Lucknow that India will always remember the Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel as the architect of the form of India today, this form is his gift.

CM Yogi said that everyone knows that the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Nawab of Junagadh did not want him to join the Republic of India. Because when this country was getting independent, the British rulers gave the freedom to the princely states of this country to remain with Pakistan or the Republic of India or maintain an independent existence. The Chief Minister said that Sardar Patel made Junagadh and Hyderabad a part of the Republic of India through a bloodless revolution. Only due to the wisdom of Sardar Patel, both these princely states became part of the Republic of India. The Nawab of Junagadh and the Nizam of Hyderabad had to flee the country.

Nehru responsible for Kashmir dispute

CM Yogi said that he was confused as to where to include the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, so Jawaharlal Nehru took it into his hands. Nehru made Jammu and Kashmir so controversial that it continued to bite India even after independence. The country got militancy and separatism from the same Kashmir because of Pandit Nehru.

Sardar Patel had strongly opposed the partition of India. At the time of independence, 567 princely states were made part of the Republic of India. CM Yogi said that the country is grateful to PM Modi for taking forward the resolution of one head and one symbol in one country by abolishing Article 370 in Kashmir and making Kashmir a part of the Republic of India.

It was the misfortune of the country that when the country was about to receive the leadership of Sardar Patel, his physical leadership was separated from us on 15 December 1950 but his memories became a new inspiration for all of us.

The first meeting of Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was a very special moment in the history of the Indian independence movement. This meeting was definitely small, but it was from here that the relationship started, which later gave a new direction to the freedom struggle and laid the foundation of independent India.

This historic meeting took place on 26 December 1916 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. At that time, the annual session of the Indian National Congress (Lucknow Congress) was going on there. Big leaders from every corner of the country reached Lucknow. Gandhi was also gradually active in Indian politics after returning from South Africa at that time.

First meeting at Charbagh railway station

This first meeting of Nehru and Gandhi took place at Charbagh railway station in Lucknow. This was not a formal or long meeting, but a normal conversation of about 20 minutes between the two. At that time Jawaharlal Nehru’s views were influenced by liberal leaders like his father Motilal Nehru, while Gandhi was talking about walking on the path of Satyagraha and mass movement.

Although there was no major decision in this first meeting, but this brought Nehru and Gandhi in touch with each other. Initially Nehru did not fully agree with Gandhi’s views, but over time he understood Gandhiji’s thinking and considered him his guide.

Information written near the station

In order to make the meeting of both the great personality memorable, the Railways has cherished their inscriptions in front of the station for the first symbol of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru to meet. According to the Shilapat here, the Congress session was again held in Lucknow under the chairmanship of Jawaharlal Nehru in March-April 1936. Mahatma Gandhi came here for the second time to participate in this session.

Later, Nehru became one of the closest colleagues of Gandhiji. When Gandhi worked to awaken the public, Nehru dreamed of building modern India. That small meeting of Lucknow was actually a big beginning of India’s future.

Mohammad Ali Jinnah is called Qaid-e-Azam in Pakistan. He has an important role in making Pakistan a separate country. Mohammad Ali Jinnah is considered the founder of Pakistan. During independence, Jinnah had talked about creating a separate country on the basis of religion, hence Pakistan was built. Today we take you about Mohammad Ali Jinnah and the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, knows what Jawaharlal Nehru said at the time of Jinnah’s death.

When did Jinnah die?

Pakistan was formed on 14 August 1947 when India was divided into two parts and a new nation was born. Mohammad Ali Jinnah became the first Governor General of Pakistan but he died very soon. Jinnah died in Karachi on 11 September 1948, about a year after Pakistan’s formation. Jinnah was seriously ill at that time. He was suffering from TB disease, but he kept his illness secret. His death gave a deep blow to Pakistan.

Jawaharlal Nehru expressed condolences

This was the period when the tragedy of Partition of India and Pakistan gave deep wounds to both countries. Jinnah thought of creating a Muslim country. Jawaharlal Nehru became his theoretical enemy. While Nehru and Jinnah were opposed to each other, both of them were also a very popular leader of their country. Both did not consider each other’s way according to themselves. Both were very different personalities. The news of Jinnah’s death stunned not only Pakistan, but also India. At that time, the tension between India and Pakistan was at its peak, yet Nehru expressed deep condolences on Jinnah’s death.

What did Nehru say?

On this sad incident, India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said, ‘Mohammad Ali Jinnah was an extraordinary personality. There were deep differences between his thoughts and us, but no one can deny his commitment and leadership. There is no bitterness for Jinnah in my mind, it is deeply sad for what happened ‘.

Ramdas athawale on nehru-modi: Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Saturday (March 29) made such a statement about Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru that the Congress will not like it. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will break the record of Jawaharlal Nehru and will maintain power for the fourth consecutive time.

Ramdas Athawale, the head of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), is on a three -day visit to Bihar. He addressed a press conference after meeting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said that the health of the JD (U) president is’ good ‘and he will remain in power for at least five to 10 years’.

Athawale responsible for ‘Chhava’ for violence

Known to say his words to impunity, Athawale blamed the blockbuster film ‘Chhava’ for the recent communal tension in his home state of Maharashtra and called for ‘shut down the demand for removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Aurangabad. He said, ‘I am proud to be part of the Narendra Modi -led team, during whose tenure we are leading to becoming the third largest economy in the world.’

Modi equals Nehru: Athawale

The Rajya Sabha MP said, ‘Modi has returned to power for the third consecutive time and equaled Nehru’s record. I am confident that he will break the record and will come to power for the fourth consecutive time. He said, ‘As a Buddhist, I respect Bihar a lot, the land where Buddha gained knowledge more than 2,500 years ago.’

Supported the performance of Buddhists

After showing solidarity with the Buddhists seeking control of Mahabodhi involved in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Athawale said that he has raised this issue in front of CM Nitish Kumar. The Union Minister said, ‘Bihar is the land of Emperor Ashoka, who spread the teachings of Buddha abroad. Today, followers of Buddhism are spread in 80 countries. It is natural for him that there are many members of other religions in the trust operating the temple. This has happened due to an Act passed by the State Government in the 1950s.

What did you say about CM Nitish’s health?

He said, ‘I have urged Nitish ji to resolve the concerns of Buddhists, who have been protesting in Bodh Gaya for a month. I had met the protesters myself yesterday. The Chief Minister has directed the concerned officials to investigate the matter. Athavale said about Nitish that I have known him since he was a Railway Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government. He also claimed that he liked the health of 70 -year -old leader Kumar. He said that the rumors of CM Nitish being physically and mentally unwell seem to ‘seem to be the act of RJD and Congress’ which are ‘worried’ about the upcoming state assembly elections.

Nitish Kumar is healthy with Lalu: Union Minister

RPI (A) chief said, ‘Nitish ji is definitely more healthy than Lalu ji (RJD President). I have been a friend of both. I think Nitish ji will remain in power for the next 5 or 10 years. Maybe my party should not be strong in Bihar, but I have told them that I will campaign for the NDA.
