The stir has once again intensified at the international level regarding former JNU student and activist Umar Khalid, who is lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail. After New York Mayor Zoharan Mamdani wrote a letter in support of Omar Khalid, now eight US lawmakers have appealed to the Indian government to give Khalid a fair trial as per international law. This letter has been sent to India’s Ambassador to America Vinay Kwatra.

American lawmakers wrote a letter to the Indian Ambassador
The letter is led by Jim McGovern, Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, and Tom Lantos, Co-Chair of the Human Rights Commission. He is a Democrat MP from the second parliamentary district of Massachusetts. Along with him, seven other MPs have also signed this letter.

Had met Umar Khalid’s parents in December
The letter states that Jim McGovern and other MPs had met Omar Khalid’s parents in early December. After this he appealed to the Government of India to intervene in this matter.

Umar Khalid is in jail without bail for 5 years
Jim McGovern wrote on X, ‘Earlier this month I met Omar Khalid’s parents. Umar Khalid has been in jail without trial for more than 5 years in India. We, along with our allies, are demanding that he be granted bail and given a fair and timely trial as per international law.

Presumed innocent until proven guilty
The MPs said India should ensure that any person arrested gets a trial within a reasonable time or is released. He demanded that the Indian government provide information on how the ongoing judicial process against Umar Khalid and other co-accused is in accordance with international standards.

Which MPs signed the letter
Signers of this letter include Jamie Raskin, Chris Van Hollen, Peter Welch, Pramila Jayapal, Rashida Tlaib, John Schakowsky, Lloyd Doggett. Earlier, New York’s new Mayor Zohran Mamdani had also written a note in support of Umar Khalid, which was shared by Khalid’s friend Bano Jyotsna on social media.

Mamdani wrote, ‘I often remember what you said about bitterness and think how important it is not to let it dominate you. Nice to meet your parents. We are all missing you.

Granted interim bail to attend sister’s wedding
Recently, Karkardooma Court of Delhi had granted temporary bail to Umar Khalid to attend his sister’s wedding. Omar Khalid’s sister Ayesha Fatima Syed was married on 27 December. He was granted interim bail from 16 December to 29 December.

A charge sheet has been filed against Umar Khalid under UAPA in the alleged conspiracy case of Delhi riots. His regular bail petition is currently pending in the Supreme Court.

A major change has taken place in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Now the system has been removed from the university library, under which students were allowed to enter after registering their faces. The student union had been raising its voice against this ‘Face Recognition System’ for a long time. JNU Students Union (JNUSU) had protested calling it a ‘violation of students’ rights’. At the same time, it was also claimed that due to the face recognition system, the democratic tradition of the university campus is being harmed.

The students said that any kind of monitoring system in the university is wrong. This should be removed. After a long fight, the university administration has surrendered to the demands of the students. Now the students have expressed happiness over the removal of this system and have called it a victory for the struggle of the student community.

System implemented without students’ knowledge

The student union had claimed that the university administration had earlier assured them that before any major decision, students would be discussed and the new system would be implemented only after consultation by forming a committee. However, nothing like this happened. Students claimed that librarian Manorama Tripathi was constantly trying to implement and advance the new system. There was no discussion with the students.

Students say that before implementing the rules, neither any committee was formed nor the students were informed about it. Just kept the system moving forward while hiding the matter.

‘Why is the library being made a check post’- Student

There was also resentment from the students that the JNU library has been converted into a ‘checkpost’. This is a protected space that should be equally accessible to every student. In such a situation, the union had appealed to the students to oppose any kind of controlling system if it is implemented in the campus.

The Left has once again won the student union elections of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Left candidates have won on all four posts. Left’s Aditi Mishra has won the post of President.

Left candidate Aditi Mishra has defeated ABVP’s Vikas Patel for the post of president. Left’s K. is on the post of Vice President. Gopika has defeated Tanya Kumari of ABVP.

Apart from this, Left’s Sunil Yadav has defeated ABVP’s Rajeshwar Kant Dubey for the post of General Secretary. Also, Left’s Danish Ali has defeated Anuj Damara for the post of Joint Secretary.

ABVP drought since 2015

Last year, ABVP made a big comeback after a decade by winning the post of Joint Secretary in the Central Panel of JNU Students Union. ABVP last won this post in 2015, after which for many years leftist organizations continued to hold all the key posts and made a clean sweep every time.

Last time ABVP had won on one post

ABVP’s victory last year was considered a big morale boost for it. But recent trends show that the Left still has a strong base in JNU. This time again the Left alliance has taken a clear lead on the Central Panel and the electoral picture once again seems to be going in their favor. Despite ABVP’s previous victory, for the first time since 2015, the Left has once again made a clean sweep in JNU this year.

The Student Union election of Jawaharlal Nehru University remains in the headlines every year. Winning this election is no less than an honor because the JNU Student Union is considered the heartbeat of university politics across the country, but often a question arises in the minds of students that what facilities do those who win the JNU Student Union elections get? Does the university administration give them salary or any honorarium?

JNU Students Union President and other officials work to convey the voice of the students to the university administration. These representatives give suggestions on behalf of the students on issues like hostels, fees, security, and academic policies. Not only this, JNU Students Union is a major platform of student politics in the country, from where many famous faces have later entered national politics.

Does JNU Students Union President get salary?

According to media reports, the administration does not give any kind of personal salary or monthly salary to the elected officials of the student union. The university earmarks a fixed fund for the functioning of the student union. This fund is used for students’ welfare, cultural programs, and activities related to the university. A fund of several lakh rupees is allocated to the student union every year. This money is not used by any one person but through the entire student union committee. The committee decides how much will be spent on which work and its account is submitted to the university. The pass is collected.

What facilities does the JNU Students Union President get?
According to reports, the student union president and other officials are given a separate office on the university campus from where they listen to the problems of the students and coordinate with the administration. Apart from this, they get the right to participate in administrative meetings, protocol recognition in major university events, and the opportunity to participate in policy discussions related to students. Student union representatives are also given facilities like staff support and official identity cards, so that they can act as a bridge between the students and the administration.

There was a massive clash between students and police at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Saturday (18 October) evening. The clash took place when the students were trying to move forward by breaking the barricades installed by the police near the West Gate. As the situation worsened, the police took 28 students into custody. These included 19 boys and 9 girls.

According to the information received so far, the incident occurred around 6.00 pm on Saturday evening. A large number of students were marching in protest against administrative decisions and disciplinary action. As soon as the students tried to exit the west gate of the campus, the police put up barricades to stop them. After this the students tried to remove these barricades and during this a scuffle started between the two sides.

4 male and 2 female policemen injured

Police said that several attempts were made to convince the students, but they ignored the instructions and continued trying to move ahead. The police had to take action to control the situation. During this clash, six policemen were injured, including four male and two female employees.

Everyone has been sent to the hospital for treatment. Police said that the students have been detained to prevent any untoward situation and further appropriate legal action will be taken. Police officials say that several attempts were made to talk to the students, but they did not follow administrative orders.

Accused of forcibly vacating the hostel, university gave reason

On the other hand, the students say that they were raising their voice against the hostel eviction notices issued to their colleagues and the fine imposed on them. They allege that the university administration ignored the interests of the students and punished them without any solid reason.

At the same time, the university administration says that the rules were violated by the student union president and other students, on which disciplinary action was made. However, keeping in mind the future of the students, a fine of only Rs 10,000 has been imposed.

An atmosphere of tension since Saturday evening

There is an atmosphere of tension in the campus after the incident. Police have brought the situation under control and additional forces have been deployed around the West Gate. At present, the administration and police are busy ensuring that no further untoward incident happens.

At present there is a lot of ruckus being created by the students.

Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University is once again surrounded by violence and allegations. A general body meeting was held on 15 October at the School of Social Sciences of JNU. During this, a heated clash broke out between two groups of students. According to the information, many students have been injured in this clash, including female students.

SFI and AISA, which are left-affiliated organizations, allege that ABVP members turned the meeting violent. Whereas ABVP says that the fight started after the objectionable remarks of the leftist councillor. Who had said derogatory things about the students of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Both groups of students are accusing each other of violence.

ABVP accused leftist organization

ABVP has launched a scathing attack on leftist groups regarding this violence. In a statement issued by the ABVP student organization, it has been said that there was a general body meeting in the School of Social Sciences of JNU, in which a counselor associated with the leftist group made extremely discriminatory remarks.

It is alleged that the counselor said in the meeting that students from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and people associated with ABVP are not eligible to come to JNU, they should be thrown out of the auditorium and this campus. After this statement the atmosphere of GBM became tense.

Female students also accused of assault

When students associated with ABVP protested peacefully and tried to present their views democratically, they were attacked by leftist students. Many students were injured in this violence, including female students. ABVP termed the attack on female students by leftist groups as extremely shameful and condemnable.

At the same time, ABVP and JNU administration also strongly condemned this entire incident and said that this incident is a direct attack on the democratic and intellectual traditions of JNU. JNU Students Union Joint Secretary Vaibhav Meena said that it is natural to have differences of opinion, but spreading violence and regional hatred in response to disagreement is against democracy.

Students coming from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar or any state have equal dignity. No one has the right to insult or attack anyone on the basis of region, ideology or organization.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), one of the leading educational institutions of the country, has seen a continuous decline in the number of female students in the last ten years. JNU Teachers Association (JNUTA) shared this information in its report ‘State of the University’ (October 2025 update) on Wednesday. According to the report, now female students in the university have become less than half of the total number.

It has been told in the report that in 2016-17, the number of female students in JNU was 51.1%, which has now reduced to 43.1%. This means that female students have now come under the category of minority in the university. JNUTA has described this as a serious sign of gender inequality and said that the university’s previous efforts at social inclusion, which were successful in increasing the number of female students, are now backfiring.

Female teachers were also affected

There has also been a decline in the number of women teachers. As of 31 March 2025, out of total 700 teachers, only 208 were women, i.e. 29.7%. This figure is less than the figures of 2022 and 2016. JNUTA described this as a cause for concern over the status of women’s education and leadership in the university.

The report also said that the university stopping conducting its entrance examinations and removing the “deprivation point system” in research programs could be a major reason behind the decline in the number of female students. Under this system, socially backward students were given extra marks to help them get admission.

Apart from this, the safe environment for female students has also decreased. In 2017, JNU’s GSCASH (Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment) was removed and ICC (Internal Complaints Committee) was created. JNUTA alleges that ICC is no longer an independent institution, but has become a part of the university administration. Due to this, female students are feeling unsafe and there has been a decrease in reporting of incidents of sexual harassment.

There is also a decline in the number of Scheduled Caste and Tribe students

Not only women, but the number of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) students has also decreased. The number of SC students in 2021-22 was 1,500, which has now reduced to 1,143. Similarly, the number of ST students decreased from 741 to 545. Due to this, the share of SC students in the university decreased from 15% to 14.3% and the share of ST students decreased from 7.4% to 6.8%, which is less than the reserved percentage.

JNUTA has linked this decline to admissions and administrative changes in the university. Social inclusion has been affected due to entrance examinations through the National Testing Agency (NTA) and lack of university autonomy.

Decline in educational investment also

The report also mentions a sharp decline in educational investment. In 2015-16, the educational expenditure of JNU was Rs 30.28 crore, which came down to Rs 19.29 crore in 2024-25. That means there was a total reduction of 36.3%. There was a 97.2% reduction in expenditure on seminars and workshops, 76.3% reduction in laboratories and 79.6% reduction in fieldwork/conferences.

Meanwhile, the financial burden on students has increased. Despite there being no entrance examination, the university compensated for its financial losses by charging more fees from students and candidates. Income from educational fees increased from Rs 240.8 lakh in 2015-16 to Rs 856.53 lakh in 2024-25.

Research culture also affected

According to the report, the research culture in the university has also weakened. While earlier research students were more in number, now they are less in comparison to graduate and postgraduate students. In 2016-17, the number of research students was 5,432, which has now come down to around 3,286.

Delhi -based Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is once again at the center of dispute between students and administration. This time the issue is demanding to bring back the university entrance examination (JNUEE). JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) has intensified its movement on this demand.

Students demand that the university should conduct entrance examination by itself instead of Common University Entrance Test (CUET). Students believe that JNU’s own JNUEE (JNUEE) was more justified and transparent, in which social diversity and ideological diversity were respected.

On May 24, a referendum was held by the Students’ Union on this issue, in which about 93 percent of the students voted in support of JNUEE. That is, a large number of students want the admission process to be the same.

Students’ Union President Nitish Kumar informed that he has tried to meet the Vice Chancellor on this issue many times, but every time some conditions come from the administration. Recently, the Vice Chancellor’s office made a condition through email that the meeting will be held only when the four officials of the students’ union are present. But Nitish Kumar made it clear that the referendum was done with the consent of the president, vice -president and general secretary, the Joint Secretary (ABVP representative) had no role in this.

Students say that if Hyderabad University and other central universities can conduct their respective entrance examinations successfully, then why can’t JNU do this? He argues that the structure of an examination like CUET does not take into consideration the uniqueness of an institute like JNU. JNUSU is now busy in gathering support by going to every corner offices, departments and hostels of the university. Discussions are being organized, so that more and more students can join this campaign.

What to say about the student union?

So far there has been no concrete response from the administration to this demand. But the students’ union says that they are not going to retreat and the movement will continue till JNUEE is restored. Overall, this matter is now not only about the examination system, but has also been related to the autonomy of the university and the right to student participation. This movement can be intensified in the coming days.
