Now laughter can also be a sign of disease, but the good thing is that now its treatment is also available in India. In fact, at AIIMS Hospital in Jodhpur, doctors successfully treated four patients of the rare disease ‘laughing epilepsy’. Let us know about it.

What is this disease?

This disease is such that the patient has repeated fits of laughter without any reason. This is not normal laughter. This is a special type of epilepsy, which is not controlled by medicines. It may sound strange, but it is very troublesome for the patient.

What is laughing epilepsy?

Laughing epilepsy is also called gastic seizures. In this the patient suddenly starts laughing, as if he has heard a joke. Actually these are seizures starting from a particular part of the brain. Sometimes other symptoms are also seen along with laughter, such as stiffness in the body or unconsciousness. If proper treatment is not given on time, this problem may increase. Patients of this disease usually do not get relief from medicines. In such cases surgery is required. Jodhpur AIIMS doctors performed surgery on four such patients using new technology.

How was the patients’ surgery done?

Doctors used a technique called minimally invasive stereotactic radiofrequency ablation. In this, that small part of the brain is targeted from where the seizures begin. This surgery was done without major incision. The operation was done through only a small incision. Due to this, the patient experiences less pain and also recovers quickly.

For this surgery, Dr. Samhita Panda and Dr. Lokesh Saini from the Department of Neurology examined the patients. At the same time, Dr. Sarbesh Tiwari found the exact place through MRI. The anesthesia team included Dr. Swati Chhabra and Dr. Manbir Kaur while Dr. Mohit Aggarwal performed the surgery. At the same time, Dr. Deepak K Jha and Dr. Suryanarayanan Bhaskar were also involved in it.

Epilepsy Surgery Program of AIIMS Jodhpur

Epilepsy surgery program is running in AIIMS Jodhpur since 2019. Till now more than 100 such surgeries have been done here. Among these, there were many patients on whom medicines were not working. In these surgeries, many patients were treated for free under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
