India’s neighboring country Nepal is known for its natural beauty as well as many different traditions. About 90 percent of the population in this beautiful country is Hindu, but despite this, the weekly holiday here is different from India and most of the countries of the world. While generally Sunday is considered a holiday all over the world, in Nepal it is a normal working day. In such a situation, a question arises in the minds of many people that why there is no Sunday holiday in Nepal. Why do schools and offices remain open on this day?

Weeki holiday is on Saturday in Nepal

Sunday is the weekly holiday in India. In many offices, both Saturday and Sunday are closed. But in Nepal the weekly holiday is on Saturday. Here government offices, banks, schools and most private offices remain closed on Saturdays. This is the reason why relatively less activity is seen in the markets in Nepal on Saturdays. Whereas in Nepal the working week starts from Sunday and continues till Friday. That means Sunday is the first working day of the week here. Schools-colleges, government offices and private offices remain normally open on Sunday.

Tradition is related to Rana rule period

The tradition of Saturday holiday in Nepal is considered to have started during the Rana rule. This system was implemented especially during the rule of Judd Shamsher. While Sunday is a holiday in India and many other countries, Nepal adopted its own tradition and continued it till today. Apart from Nepal, in many countries of the world, Sunday holiday is considered to be associated with Christian traditions. In countries like Europe, America and Britain, Sunday is a holiday for this reason. Whereas Nepal was never under the British, hence Christian influence remained less there. This is the reason why Nepal did not accept Sunday as a holiday.

Saturday is a day of worship and rest in Nepal

In Nepali culture, starting new work on Saturday is not considered auspicious. This day is considered more suitable for rest and worship. Here, due to religious and cultural beliefs, the tradition of holiday on Saturday gradually became stronger, which is still applicable today. At the same time, Nepal is included in those few countries which have never been slaves. While India had to face Mughal and then British rule, Nepal always remained an independent nation. Lord Pashupatinath is considered the national deity of Nepal and his grand temple is located in Kathmandu.
