Justice br gavai: Justice BR Gawai will be the next Chief Justice of the country. The President approved his appointment. Justice Gawai will take charge as the new Chief Justice from 14 May. The tenure of the current CJI Justice Sanjeev Khanna is ending on 13 May. The Law Ministry issued a notification to announce the appointment of Justice Gawai as the 52nd CJI of India.

Recommendation was sent to central government

According to the prescribed process, on 16 April, Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna sent the name of Justice BR Gawai to the Central Government. Justice Gawai’s term will be six months. On December 23, his term will end when he is 65 years of age. He is the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court after the current CJI Khanna.

Other Dalit CJI will be Justice Gawai

The appointment of Justice Gawai is special in many ways, because he is going to become the second Dalit Chief Justice of the country. He was born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati. He started his career with advocacy on 16 March 1985. He departed the late times in the initial years. King S. Worked till 1987 with Bhosle (former Advocate General and Justice of the High Court). After this, from 1987 to 1990, he practiced independently in Bombay High Court.

Justice Gawai’s career

After 1990, he practiced mainly in the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, in which constitutional and administrative laws were special areas. He was a permanent lawyer for Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Amravati Municipal Corporation and Amravati University. Apart from this, he regularly advocated various autonomous organizations and corporations like CCCOM, DCVL and several city councils of Vidarbha region.

He was appointed as Assistant Government Advocate and Additional Public Prosecutor at Bombay High Court, Nagpur bench from August 1992 to July 1993. On 17 January 2000, he was appointed a government advocate and public prosecutor for the Nagpur bench. On 14 November 2003, he was appointed as Additional Justice of Bombay High Court and became a permanent Justice on 12 November 2005.

Gawai has been appointed under the rights conferred under the Constitution of India. He is currently working as a judge in the Supreme Court and will take over the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from 14 May 2025.

According to media reports, Justice BR Gavai started practicing in 1985 and in a few years, Nagpur bench and Bombay High Court were recognized with their ability.
