Indeevar: From Struggle to Success

Indivar was born in Barua Sagar town of Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh. He was interested in poetry and song writing since childhood. During the freedom struggle, he wrote many patriotic songs in the name of Azad. After marriage, he came to Mumbai and went through days full of struggle. In 1946, he wrote songs for the first time for the film Double Face, but the film did not do well.

He got his real recognition in 1951 from the film Malhar, where his song ‘Bade Armaan Se Rakh Hai Balam Teri Kasam’ in Roshan’s music became a superhit. In the year 1963, his song ‘O Narik Ho, Naaz Se Bhi Tum Pyar Se Bhi Pyaari’ in Babubhai Mistry’s film Paras Mani became quite popular. After this his journey did not stop.

Indeevar’s strongest pairing was with composers Kalyanji-Anandji. His songs in Manoj Kumar’s films ‘Upkaar’ and Purab Aur Paschim beautifully weaved the patriotic and social message. Songs like ‘Now you don’t need me’ still make the listeners emotional. Indivar also did wonders in Rakesh Roshan’s films. Songs from films like ‘Kamchor’, ‘Khudgarj’, ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’, ‘Kala Bazaar’, ‘Kishan Kanhaiya’, ‘Karan Arjun’ and ‘Koyla’ won the hearts of the audience.

Immortal song of Indeevar – still alive today

Indeevar also received the Filmfare Award for the song ‘Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda’ in Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore’s film Amanush. Indivar was not limited to Hindi films only. He also wrote songs for pop singers Nazia Hasan and Zohaib Hasan. Nazia’s songs like ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’, ‘Boom Boom’, and ‘Chandan Sa Badan’ left a deep impact on the youth.

Indeevar gave immortal songs in dozens of films like Dil Ne Pukara, Saraswati Chandra, Yaadgaar, Safar, Sacha Jhoota, Johnny Mera Naam, Dharmatma, Hera Pheri, Don, Qurbani, Kalakar. There was a unique combination of simplicity and depth in his words. Indeevar left this world on 27 February 1997, but his songs are still alive.

Kalyanji birthday special: Sometimes things that happen in life, they change the direction of luck. Something similar happened with Kalyanji, who later became a famous musician of Hindi films. Kalyanji’s full name was Kalyanji Virji Shah.

He was born on 30 June 1928 in Kundrodi, Kutch, Gujarat. A few years later, his family came to Mumbai from Gujarat and here his father Veerji Shah started a small grocery shop.

Learned music instead of borrowing

The shop was running as usual, the customers used to come and go, but there was a customer who would take the goods every time and do not take the name of giving money. When the borrowing increased and the question of giving money arose, the person offered something else. He said, ‘I will teach music to your sons instead of borrowing.’

Who knew that this deal would fill the future of two innocent children with tone. This method of repaying borrowings turned into a guru-disciple relationship. From that moment, music was knocked for the first time in the life of Kalyanji and his brother Anandji.

The notes, which were compensated for a borrowing, started touching Kalyanji and Anandji’s heart and gradually their interest started increasing, Riyaz’s time started increasing and music like music started coming into their blood.

Kalyanji became such a identity of Hindi cinema

This was the period when people used to learn by giving money from big masters, and Kalyanji got this knowledge due to a ‘borrowing’. Over time, the skills were enhanced and both brothers later became the identity of Hindi cinema with their hard work and dedication. Music composer pair Kalyanji-Anandji together gave music in more than one song songs, including films like ‘Don’, ‘Safar’, ‘Kora Paper’.

Kalyanji, along with his brother Anandji, formed an orchestral company called ‘Kalyanji Veerji & Party’, who used to perform performance in different cities.

Kalyanji’s first film work was ‘Samrat Chandragupta’, released in 1959. At that time, Anandji was not officially associated with him, but he supported him. Later Anandji officially started working with Kalyanji and composed music for films ‘Satta Bazaar’ and ‘Madari’ released in 1959. His first major hit was ‘Chhaliya’ in 1960. In 1965, films like ‘Himalaya’s lap’ and ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ brought him to the list of successful Bollywood musicians.

Kalyanji-Anandji gave music in more than 250 films

Kalyanji-Anandji gave music in more than 250 films, out of which 17 films were Golden Jubilee and 39 Silver Jubilee. He worked with the great singers of his time like Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Mukesh and Mahendra Kapoor. He received the first Filmfare Award for ‘Best Music Director’ for the song ‘Mera Jeevan Kora Paper’ from the film ‘Kora Paper’.

In 1992, the Government of India honored the fourth highest civilian honor ‘Padma Shri’ for extraordinary contribution in the music sector. His pair composed 326 songs for Lata Mangeshkar, out of which 24 songs were given under their first name ‘Kalyanji Veerji Shah’ and the remaining 302 songs in the name of ‘Kalyanji-Anandji’.

The famous qawwali adorned with the voice of Manna Dey ‘Yari Hai Iman Mera, Dude Meri Zindagi …’ is still in the hearts of people.
