Expressing concern, Rajya Sabha MP and senior lawyer Kapil Sibal said that the months of February, March and April have passed and now we are in May, but oil is not being supplied from the Strait of Hormuz. He warned that there is a shortage of oil in the country and we do not have enough stock left, due to which the economic situation may become very serious and challenging in the future.

Kapil Sibal said – difficulties will increase

Kapil Sibal said, ‘Everyone knew that difficulties would increase. Everyone including the Prime Minister already knew this. We have also been ministers during the tenure of Dr. Manmohan Singh. Amidst the rise in international prices of crude oil and ongoing tension in West Asia, the prices of petrol and diesel have been increased by three rupees per liter. This may increase pressure on inflation.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Friday (15 May 2026) that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open to normal commercial ships, but ships from countries that are involved in the conflict with Iran will not be allowed to enter it. His statement has come at a time when this waterway is considered very important for global oil and trade.

Iran gave way to Indian ships: Araghchi

Iran is continuously facilitating safe passage of ships and has given way to many Indian ships in the past also. Araghchi said the safe passage of all ships is in Iran’s policy and interest and Tehran is ready to help those who want safe passage.

He said, ‘We also wish that the Strait of Hormuz remain completely open. From our side it is open and all ships can pass through here, except the ships of those countries which are involved in war against us. Ships that want to pass through here will have to contact our military, because there are some landmines and obstructions there. We will show them safe passage, as we have done for many Indian ships. Safe movement of all ships is our policy and we are ready to help them.
